Objective: To assess the effect of colored plastic paddings on the foliar micromorphology of husk tomato (Physalis ixocarpa Brot.). Design / methodology / approach: A completely randomized statistical model was used with five treatments (black, white, blue, red and green paddings) with three repetitions each, 95% reliability and Tukey's mean test (P ? 0.05). To quantify the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) a portable GreenSeeker® sensor was used. To measurement of total soluble solids a Atago® Digital refractometer, the density and stomatal index, length and width of stomata were determined with a Carl Zeiss microscope with an integrated camera and the AxionVisionRel measurement software 4.8. Results: The results show no significant differences in the NDVI and total soluble solids. The micromorphological variables of adaxial stomatal density and adaxial stomatal index were superior in the blue paddings and exceeded black paddings in 95 % and 50 % respectively. The rest of the micromorphological variables were statistically similar, the yield per plant was statistically similar in the black, white, red and green, while blue paddings yield less. Study limitations / implications: blue paddings improve micromorphological characteristics, but not the yield of husk tomato crops. Findings / conclusions: Some of the foliar micromorphological characteristics of the husk tomato crop are modified by colored plastic paddings; however, the improvement in these variables does not necessarily improve the crop yield, probably due to the absorbed and reflected radiation by the colored plastic paddings.

AbstractThis study aimed to evaluate in the papaya Tainung genotype, the effects of partial root-zone drying (PRD) technique on soil water regimes by using different frequencies of shifting irrigation-side of plant row and the effects of PRD technique on (1) crop agronomic performance, (2) titratable fruit acidity (TA), (3) total soluble solids (TSS), and TSS/TA ratio. Also, we analyze the spatial dynamic of papaya condition using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from different satellite images. The study was conducted in the semi-arid region of Bahia (BA) and Minas Gerais (MG), Brazil. The combination of 100% (Full irrigation—FU), 50%, and 35% in the irrigation depth (WID) and frequencies of shifting plant-row side irrigation of 0 (Fixed Irrigation—FX), 7, 14, and 21 days were applied. Nine treatments were studied in BA and five in MG. The water available in the soil was reduced to 44% for frequencies of shifting plant-row side irrigation of 7 days, 50% for 14 days, and 85% for 21 days, compared to the soil water availability at field capacity. Partial water deficit in the soil through the PRD technique did not significantly reduce the total root length, effective root depth, and root effective horizontal distance of the papaya Tainung genotype. However, PRD treatments showed leaf abscission, which resulted in reduced leaf area and NDVI values, especially in the MG experiment. Papaya yield and fruit quality were not affected. However, except for PRD 21 35%, irrigation water depth reduced to 50 and 35% under PRD increased crop water productivity (CWP) in papaya plants. Thus, the PRD technique may save 35% of WID using the alternation of lateral shift irrigation of crop row every 7 days under water scarcity in semi-arid regions. The NDVI index was important to compare the papaya canopy vigor between the experimental areas studied. We also confirmed the potential of NDVI to monitor the vigor of papaya canopy, since we could notice the sensibility of NDVI to identify water stress in papaya in higher vapor pressure deficit (VPD) conditions occurred in October 2016 and January 2017 in Bom Jesus da Lapa-BA. Therefore, the PRD strategy can be a useful tool to save water in papaya cultivation under semi-arid conditions.

Currently, the greatest challenge for vine growers is to improve the yield and quality of grapes by minimizing costs and environmental impacts. This goal can be achieved through a better knowledge of vineyard spatial variability. Traditional platforms such as airborne, satellite and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) solutions are useful investigation tools for vineyard site specific management. These remote sensing techniques are mainly exploited to get the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), which is useful for describing the morpho-vegetational characteristics of vineyards. This study was conducted in a vineyard in Tuscany (Italy) during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. Ground data were acquired to detect some agronomic variables such as yield (kg/vine), total soluble solids (TSS), and pruning weight (kg/vine). Remote sensed multispectral images acquired by UAV and Sentinel-2 (S2) satellite platform were used to assess the analysis of the vegetative variability. The UAV NDVI was extracted using both a mixed pixels approach (both vine and inter-row) and from pure canopy pixels. In addition to these UAV layers, the vine thickness was extracted. The aim of this study was to evaluate both classical Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and spatial statistical methods (Moran Index-MI and BILISA) to assess their performance in a multi-temporal comparison between satellite and ground data with UAV information. Good correlations were detected between S2 NDVI and UAV NDVI mixed pixels through both methods (R2 = 0.80 and MI = 0.75). Regarding ground data, UAV layers showed low and negative association with TSS (MI = - 0.34 was the lowest value) whereas better spatial autocorrelations with positive values were detected between UAV layers and both yield (MI ranged from 0.42 to 0.52) and pruning weight (MI ranged from 0.45 to 0.64). The spatial analysis made by MI and BILISA methodologies added more information to this study, clearly showing that both UAV and Sentinel-2 satellite allowed the vigour spatial variability within the vineyard to be detected correctly, overcoming the classical comparison methods by adding the spatial effect. MI and BILISA play a key role in identifying spatial patterns and could be successfully exploited by agricultural stakeholders.

Small Island Gelasa rarely studied. Mapping ecosystems on small islands with the image of Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS). Previous research has found that ALOS has the ability to map coral reefs and seagrass beds in shallow water, and is able to map vegetation cover density. The method of image interpretation uses the vegetation index algorithm in the ALOS image, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), and the Lyzengga approach to correct the water column. The results of the study were obtained in the area of Seagrass Padang in the shallow waters of 41.99 ha, the area of coral reefs was 125.57 ha. NDVI results on land / small islands Gelasa for dense vegetation of 47.62 ha; area of Medium Vegetation coverage 105.86 Ha; and the coverage of Rare Vegetation is 34.24 Ha.

The aim of this study is to analyse the relationship between vegetation indices of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and soil nutrient of oil palm plantation at Felcra Nasaruddin Bota in Perak for future sustainable environment. The satellite image was used and processed in the research. By Using NDVI, the vegetation index was obtained which varies from -1 to +1. Then, the soil sample and soil moisture analysis were carried in order to identify the nutrient values of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K). A total of seven soil samples were acquired within the oil palm plantation area. A regression model was then made between physical condition of the oil palms and soil nutrients for determining the strength of the relationship. It is hoped that the risk map of oil palm healthiness can be produced for various applications which are related to agricultural plantation.
