The contemporary architect operates within a profession which is detached from the physical processes undertaken during the making of architecture. The emergence of two-dimensional representation as the architect’s primary mode of communication and design is deeply embedded within architectural praxis. The fundamental physical reality of architecture requires that the architect have an experientially based understanding of architecture’s conceptual drivers. This situation necessitates re-conceptualizing the process of creating architecture. By reverting to a tangibly based method of design the creation of representative and demonstrative artefacts can aid in developing a stimulating and exploratory design process. The proposed method of design imbues the designer with a direct corporal experience of architectural ideas heightening an awareness of existent and emergent complexities in manifesting architectural works. The maturation of an architectural intuition steeped in the material reality of architecture developed through the fabrication of architectural prototypes is a critical tool in the arsenal of the contemporary architect.

Ramayana story has been widely known in Indonesian society since centuries ago. This story has been disseminated from generation to generation. The story is familiar to the public in the form of this kakawin often staged in the form of performing arts, dramatari, puppet performances, as well as in the form of puppet or sculpture. Ramayana story has a lot of episodes, but in the creation of this animated video work taking Shinta kidnapping episode. This animated video works explored the form of characters and stories, as well as collaborate with dance, heater and musical arts. Kidnapping of Shinta’s story became the basis of the principal narrative in the creation of animated video with the theme of Ramayana episode kidnapping Shinta ‘Langen Katresnan’ which then developed in accordance with the ideas and concepts. It also supports the creation of new work that promotes originality of the work. This animated video works using two-dimensional techniques. This is actually a reference to that puppet animation that was first recognized by earlier ancestors.Keywords: puppet, Ramayana, animation

Film Unyil puppet comes not just part of the entertainment world that can be enjoyed by people from the side of the story, music, and dialogue. However, there is more value in it which is a manifestation of the creator that can be absorbed into the charge for the benefit of educating the children of Indonesia to the public at large. The Unyil puppet created by the father of Drs. Suyadi is one of the works that are now widely known by the whole people of Indonesia. The process of creating a puppet Unyil done with simple materials and formation of character especially adapted to the realities of the existing rural region. Through this process, this research leads to the design process is fundamentally educational puppet inspired by the creation of Si Unyil puppet. The difference is the inspiring character created in this study is on the characters that exist in urban life, especially the city of Jakarta. Thus the results of this study are the pattern of how to shape the design of products through the creation of the puppet with the approach of urban culture.

An important question for a designer is how, in the design process, to deal with the small geometric variations which result from either the manufacture process or in-service deterioration. For some blade designs geometric variations will have little or no effect on the performance of a row of blades, while in others their effects can be significant. This paper shows that blade designs which are most sensitive are those which are susceptible to a distinct switch in the fluid mechanisms responsible for limiting blade performance. To demonstrate this principle, the sensitivity of compressor 2D incidence range to manufacture variations is considered. Only one switch in mechanisms was observed, the onset of flow separation at the leading edge. This switch is only sensitive to geometric variations around the leading edge, 0–3% of the suction surface. The consequence for these manufacture variations was a 10% reduction in the blade's positive incidence range. For this switch, the boundary in the design space is best defined in terms of the blade pressure distribution. Blade designs where the acceleration exceeds a critical value just downstream of the leading edge are shown to be robust to geometric variation. Two historic designs, supercritical blades and blades with sharp leading edges, though superior in design intent, are shown to sit outside this robust region and thus, in practice, perform worse. The improved understanding of the robust, region of the design space is then used to design a blade capable of a robust, 5% increase in operating incidence range.

Seed analysts need to identify seeds, and seed catalogs are used as a reference to accomplish this task. Conventional seed catalogs supply two-dimensional photographs and hand-drawn diagrams. In this study, a new, three-dimensional representation of seeds is developed to supplement these traditional photographs and drawings. QuickTime VR is a promising method for viewing three-dimensional objects on a computer screen. It permits manipulation of an object by rotating and viewing it from any pre-specified angle at an interactive speed, allowing the viewer the sense of examining a hand-held object. In this study, QuickTime VR object movies of seeds were created as interactive "movies" of seeds that can be rotated and scaled to give the viewer the sensation of examining actual seeds. This approach allows the examination of virtual seeds from any angle, permitting more accurate identification of seeds by seed analysts.

The prevailing interpretations of physics are based on deeply entrenched assumptions, rooted in classical mechanics. Logical implications include: the denial of entropy and irreversible change as fundamental physical properties; the inability to explain random quantum measurements or nonlocality without untestable metaphysical implications; and the inability to define complexity or explain its evolution. We propose a conceptual model based on empirically justifiable assumptions. The WYSIWYG Conceptual Model (WCM) assumes no hidden properties: “What You can See Is What You Get.” The WCM defines a system’s state in the context of its actual ambient background, and it extends existing models of physical reality by defining entropy and exergy as objective contextual properties of state. The WCM establishes the irreversible production of entropy and the Second law of thermodynamics as a fundamental law of physics. It defines a dissipative system’s measurable rate of internal work as an objective measure of stability of its dissipative process. A dissipative system can follow either of two paths toward higher stability: it can 1) increase its rate of exergy supply or 2) utilize existing exergy supplies better to increase its internal work rate and functional complexity. These paths guide the evolution of both living and non-living systems.

<p>This research investigates a correspondence between the architectural representational tool of drawing, and the translations of these into something recognised as ‘built’. It is fundamentally concerned around representation in architecture driven by the principles that our entire engagement with architecture is via representation. Architects do not produce buildings but produce images of buildings, and the role of two-dimensional representation plays a principal part in architecture. Architecture is always representational, and the more we engage with representation the more we might push the envelope with what we understand architecture to be.   This thesis aims to establish within the contemporary discipline, what we understand about the responsibility of linear perspective as a representational tool. By understanding what lies behind the canon of perspective in architecture, this thesis questions whether the representation of conventional architecture could benefit from a new way of drawing linear perspective?   The discovery of perspective during the Renaissance has influenced not only our way of representing architecture but also how we view, and therefore design it. It has become integrated with our understanding of architecture at an unconscious level. Architects no longer need control of projective geometry, and due to this cannot be critical of the system of representation or control its limits. This leads to mediate a shift in perspective, with the intention to generate a representation of new form.   The motivation for this thesis was that from linear perspective, as it has done so for centuries, we can produce evocative and meaningful vocabularies that attempt to enrich architecture.</p>
