The researcher investigated the effect of using short stories and cooperative learning together in one class and compared its effect with the existing traditional methods and cooperative program as well as contextualized short-story-based program. To do so, 75 Iranian female EFL learners participated in the study after a homogeneity test. They were divided into three groups i.e., storytelling, cooperative, and mixed. The learners in the cooperative group followed the above procedures of cooperative learning for reading short stories and the short story group was engaged in a question and answering activity was guided by the teacher, as mentioned earlier. Moreover, the mixed group covered the short stories extensively out of the class as described for the short story group and did the cooperative group work activity in class. After the treatment lasted 12 sessions, the learners took the test again. The study's findings reveal that using story-telling can be a good strategy to bypass the difficulty of vocabulary instruction insomuch it gives leaners chances of using new words communicatively to produce target forms in meaningful real-world contexts.

Basing on poetics, structure of works and motif / archetype of the Wise Old Man, the paper examines and compares the image of the Old Man in three short stories: Tocka by Anton Chekhov (Russian), A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway (American) and Lao Hac by Nam Cao (Vietnamese). In each short story, the old man leads a lonely life. Their loneliness can’t sometimes be shared or isn’t shared such as the case of Iona Potapov, in Tocka of Anton Chekhov, who just lost his son last week; of the Old Man, in A Clean, Well-Lighted Place of Ernest Hemingway who suffered from loneliness in his old age; and of Lao Hac, in Nam Cao’s work of the same title, who, with hopelessness, has gone away to work in plantation for three years because his poor son couldn’t afford to get married. If the impact of rural elements in the process of social development from agriculture to industry is taken into consideration, we can put these three short stories in the following sequence: Lao Hac (1943) of Nam Cao, Tocka (1871) of Anton Chekhov, and A Clean, Well-Lighted Place (1933) of Ernest Hemingway. It seems that the more the society is urbanized, the more loneliness can’t be wiped out. Now, the deeply rooted characters of the archetype of the Wise Old Man (according to Jung) are expressed in only three points: how to best bahave in loneliness.

One of the most pivotal challenges that learners may face, during foreign language learning, is building a reliable lexicon. Insufficient vocabulary knowledge may put serious obstacles in the foreign language learning process. Thus, students need to equip themselves with different strategies to cope with these difficulties. Translation equivalence (TE) is one of these strategies. Since the success or failure of any vocabulary learning strategy depends on two main factors: developing the learners’ vocabulary knowledge and the extent of difficulty or ease with which the learner acquires new words, this research aims at investigating the impact of this strategy on EFL learners’ vocabulary knowledge and word learnability. 258 Tunisian 9th graders participated in this project. Two vocabulary recognition tests, one using translation equivalence and the other using only-English strategies, were used to test the hypotheses. Different statistical tests and techniques were employed to analyze data. Findings showed that TE has a positive impact on learners’ vocabulary knowledge and revealed that students, at this level of proficiency, learn vocabulary through translation better than any other strategy using only English.

To examine the impact of cooperative learning strategy on the behaviour states of EFL learners, a 3-month study was conducted in 4 government secondary schools in EFL context (Saudi Arabia). This study aims to identify the effect of cooperative learning in comparison to traditional learning in learning English grammar on the behaviour states of EFL Learners. This study contributed to the knowledge about how EFL learners behave when they interact cooperatively together in cooperative learning groups in comparison to their colleagues who learn in traditional learning. In this study, the participants were 139 tenth grade male students, in 4 male government secondary schools in Al-Baha city, in Saudi Arabia context. An examination of the Kruskal‑Wallis tests shows that the EFL learners in the experimental conditions displayed more cooperative behavioural states and less non‑cooperative states, individual task‑oriented, and individual non‑task behaviours than their classmates in the control condition. In addition, outcome scores were, on average, higher in the experimental condition for cooperative behavioural outcomes. They were lower in the experimental condition for non‑cooperation behaviour, individual task oriented and individual non‑task oriented.

The problem that occurs is related to the large number of lecturers using the e-learning application UEU to teach in the environment of the University of America Superior as a medium for distance learning. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the use of UEU e-learning media on short story writing skills in the fourth semester for Indonesian language skills courses at Esa Unggul University. This study uses an experimental method with the research design used is the Pre-Experimental Design type (One Group Pretest Posttest Design) because this study uses one class group as a sample, and there is no control class as a comparison. The data used are the results of students' short story writing skills when using e-learning learning media. The instruments of this study used the normality test, homogeneity test, correlation test, regression test, correlation test, coefficient of determination, and hypothesis testing. The results of the study of the influence of the use of UEU e-learning media on short story writing skills in the fourth semester for Indonesian language courses at the University of Esa Unggul showed acceptable if the count ≤ ttabel or sig> α value. This is when the pretest test got 7, 248 when teaching short stories using face-to-face comparisons, but after using the e-learning application UEU experienced a significant change of 23,200 in making short stories. Keywords: Media e-learning, short story writing.
