The explosion of social networking websites in general, and Facebook in particular, impacts the educational context both positively and negatively. Too much time spent on Facebook leads to negative effects on the university work of students. The objectives of this research are to measure and analyse the relationship between the Facebook dependence and the negative consequences of the excessive use of Facebook on the university work of students. In this respect, a conceptual model has been tested that has two inter-correlated latent variables: the withdrawal syndrome, measuring the Facebook dependence and the negative consequences onto the university work. The analysis of results has been done onto three groups featuring the user’s profile according to the network size (number of Facebook friends) of students. The findings show that the larger the Facebook network, the higher the frequency and duration of Facebook use. The analysis of measurement invariance shows that the model exhibits factorial, metric, and scalar invariance on the three user profiles. The comparison between groups shows that students having larger networks and spending more time on Facebook have a higher level of dependence and their university work is more affected. Purpose Most empirical balanced scorecard (BSC) studies have shown a tendency to wrongly employ reflective indicators instead of the more theoretically suitable formative indicators. However, formative indicators are difficult to apply due to the lack of statistical software support and a standardized model testing method. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This study empirically compares the reflective and formative measurement method with standardized model comparison criteria. After collecting 217 valid questionnaires from companies in South Korea, the authors applied a structural equation modeling technique to analyze the data. Findings The result shows that the formative measure provides greater validity for the corporate performance measurement using BSC. Further, this study shows the indicators’ relative influence on each BSC perspectives using the formative measure. Practical implications This study proved the usefulness of the formative measure analysis method and suggested its practical use, focusing on the indicators most useful in developing corporate strategies. In addition, the authors showed that formative indicators could be used in the corporate environment by overcoming the limitations of conventional studies that were confined to causal relationships with latent variables. Originality/value This study may be the pioneering work that compares formative and reflective indicators simultaneously, addressing the usefulness of formative measurement and its application validity in the existing empirical studies using reflective measurements.

Abstract Recently, specifically in the last decade, at the University Clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the number of patients treated with epidural analgesia for painless childbirth, which in some percentage ends in Caesarian section (35%), has increased. The increased use of the epidural anesthesia and analgesia is due to the fact that it is one of the most popular ways of childbirth today. This situation is a result of the benefits that epidural anesthesia has for the patient, which consist of allowing the pregnant woman to be conscious during childbirth and to feel and see her child coming into the world, accompanied with smaller intensity of intraoperative and postoperative pain. However, the results or the effects in practice have shown that in certain insignificant percentage patients can have negative consequences from the received analgesia (anesthesia) such as: headache, cases of durra puncture, epidural abscess or hematoma, neurological outbursts etc. But, the subject of this analysis or the aim of this study is the appearance of Horner’s syndrome, as one of the negative effects of the epidural anesthesia, which even though rarely (only in 1% of the cases) can appear as a result of the epidural anesthesia. In the case study using the historic, comparative and empirical method we will try through a specific case to determine the causes for the occurrence of the Horner’s syndrome, how it should be treated and what are the consequences for the patient.

The time spent on Facebook by university students is continuously increasing. This fact is raising many questions as regards the relation between the social networking websites and the university. The educators are challenged to understand the factors that are driving the adoption of social networking websites, the characteristics of the daily use as well as the positive and negative effects on the university work. The social influence has been recognized as one of the factors that are driving the adoption of information systems. On another hand, the excessive use may lead to addiction. The first objective of this research is to explore the correlation between the social influence and the Facebook dependence. A model with these latent variables has been specified and tested on two samples of university students, the first from Romania and the second from Lithuania. The second objective of the research is to comparatively discuss the measures in each country. A multi-group confirmatory factor analysis has been carried on to test the configural and metric invariance. The comparison of means shows that university students reporting higher social influence have a higher risk of Facebook dependence. The comparative analysis revealed that for both variables, the mean values are higher for the Romanian sample. To enhance instruction in higher education, many universities in the Middle East have chosen to introduce learning management systems (LMS) to their institutions. However, this new educational technology is not being used at its full potential and faces resistance from faculty members. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted an empirical research study to uncover factors influencing faculty members’ acceptance of LMS. Thus, in the Fall semester of 2014, Information Technology faculty members were surveyed to better understand their perceptions of the incorporation of LMS into their courses. The results showed that personal factors such as motivation, load anxiety, and organizational support play important roles in the perception of the usefulness of LMS among IT faculty members. These findings suggest adding these constructs in order to extend the Technology acceptance model (TAM) for LMS acceptance, which can help stakeholders of the university to implement the use of this system. This may assist in planning and evaluating the use of e-learning.

With the explosion of new technologies for e-learning there is an increasing demand to assess the educational and motivational value of a new application. Augmented reality (AR) is a promising technology that creates new learning experiences by integrating real objects from the traditional school into a computing environment. A research challenge is to better understand the relationships between various factors of interest for the successful deployment of educational systems in primary and secondary schools. There are several approaches to evaluation that are based on quantitative methods. In recent years there is an increasing interest in taking an alternative perspective to measurement by using formatively measured constructs. This paper will highlight several benefits in using formative measurement models to evaluate the educational and motivational value of an AR-based e-learning application. The evaluation target is a Chemistry learning scenario that has been developed in the European project ARiSE – Augmented Reality in School Environment. Based on our previous work we developed a new evaluation instrument that includes both reflectively and formatively measured constructs to evaluate the ergonomic, educational, and motivational quality of a desktop AR application. The preliminary results from a pilot study show the extent to which specific features of the Chemistry scenario are positively influencing the educational and motivational value. AbstractMusculoskeletal pain is a major concern in our life due to its negative effects on our ability to perform daily functions. During COVID-19 pandemic, several countries switched their teaching programs into e-learning, where students spend long hour using electronic devices. The use of these devices was associated with several musculoskeletal complains among the students. The aim of this study is to evaluate the different body aches associated with e-learning on university students. The subjects of this study were students from An-Najah University in Palestine. 385 questionnaires were filled using Google forms questionnaire and all the subjects were using e-learning due to COVID-19 pandemic. Our study showed that a large percentage of participants used electronic devices for e-learning during the pandemic. The Duration of these devices use was correlated with duration and degree of pain, and associated with the difficulty in ability to perform several daily activities. Furthermore, most of the students used the sitting position with supine bent forward during the device usage. Thus, the university students that participated in this study had an increase in body aches during the e-learning process, and the aches duration and severity increases if the duration of electronic devices usage increase.

Italy was the first European country which has been affected by the fast spread of SARS-Cov-2, leading to a general lockdown that started on March 9, 2020, only two weeks after the diagnosis of the Italian patient zero. Such lockdown concerned also the school, that is, the social institution which suffered —and keeps suffering— the most the negative effects of the national restrictions whether because of the lack of precise indications regarding the didactics after the suspension of in-class activities or because of the deficiencies and criticalities that it has been facing since ages. It was only in April when teachers could eventually resort to e-learning; though, due to the lack of both methodological indications and adequate study plans, each school acted autonomously and the best they could. In most cases, it was the teachers’ initiative and individual efforts that led to a successful didactics. As a matter of fact, teachers tried any kind of strategy to keep in touch actively with their students, as testified through the technique of the focus group. Although, in disagreement with the message of hope spread during the lockdown, not everything has gone well; that is, the virus has highlighted a chronical situation of fragility and vulnerability, whose negative consequences and effects seem to persist also in the future. This essay aims at analysing what happened during the first Italian lockdown framing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a sociocultural dimension. For this purpose, I will take into account the main contextual factors that have contributed to worsen —from the didactic and teaching perspective— the consequences of the spread of the virus.

The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of seven factors causing academic stress on students of University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University: Lack of leisure time, Academic performance, Fear of failure, Academic overload, Finances, Competition between students, Relationships with university faculty. Based on the results of a practical survey of 185 students who are attending any courses at the University of Economics and Business - Vietnam National University, the study assesses the impact of stress factors on students. The thesis focuses on clarifying the concept of "stress" and the stress level of students, while pointing out its negative effects on students. This study includes two cross-sectional questionnaire surveys. The first survey uses a set of 16 questions to assess students’ perceptions and attitudes based on an instrument to measure academic stress - Educational Stress Scale for Adolescents (ESSA). The second survey aims to test internal consistency, the robustness of the previously established 7-factor structure. Henceforth, the model was brought back and used qualitatively, combined with Cronbach’s Alpha measurement test and EFA discovery factor analysis. This study was conducted from October 2019 to December 2019. From these practical analyzes, several proposals were made for the society, the school and the students themselves.

Electronic learning or online learning is a part of recent education which is dramatically used in universities all over the world. As well as the use and integration of e-learning is at the crucial stage in all developing countries. It is the most significant part of education that enhances and improves the educational system. This paper is to examine the hindrances that influence e-learning in Nigerian university system. In order to have an inclusive research, a case study research was performed in Evangel University, Akaeze, southeast of Nigeria. The paper demonstrates similar hindrances on country side. This research is a blend of questionnaires and interviews, the questionnaires was distributed to lecturers and an interview was conducted with management and information technology unit. Research had shown the use of e-learning in university education which has influenced effectively and efficiently the education system and that the University education in Nigeria is at the crucial stage of e-learning. Hence, some of the hindrances are avoiding unbeaten integration of e-learning. The aim of this research is to unravel the barriers that impede the integration of e-learning in universities in Nigeria. Nevertheless, e-learning has modified the teaching and learning approach but integration is faced with many challenges in Nigerian University.
