A field experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka with a view to study character association and path analysis in six strawberry genotypes. The trial was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Data on crown height, number of flower buds per plant, number of flowers per plant, number of fruits per plant, length and breadth of fruit and fruit yield per plant were collected. All the characters showed significant correlation with fruit yield. Path analysis revealed that crown height, number of flowers per plant and length of fruit had the positive direct effect on yield per plant. Number of flower buds per plant, number of fruits per plant and breadth of fruit had negative direct effect on yield per plant. An experiment was conducted at the experimental farm, Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur from March 2008 to July 2008 to study the correlation and path analysis in the selected okra genotypes. The experiment was carried out in Randomized Complete Block Design with thee replications. The results indicated that different genotypes varied significantly regarding all the studied characters. The Fruits per plant and fruit weight of different genotypes had a high degree of significant positive association with fruit yield and a high positive direct effect indicated that these characters had a major contribution towards the fruit yield of the genotypes. The days to first flowering and days to first fruit harvest showed a significant positive correlation with picking duration both genotypic and phenotypic levels. The Picking duration showed a highly significant positive genotypic correlation with fruit diameter and fruit length. At the final harvest plant height showed a highly significant positive genotypic correlation with fruit length and fruit weight at the genotypic level. The fruit length showed a highly significant positive genotypic correlation with fruit weight and fruit diameter and genotypic level. The fruits per plant showed a highly significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlation with fruit yield. A significant positive genotypic correlation with fruit yield was shown by fruit weight. The fruits per plant (0.979) and fruit weight (0.554) also showed a high positive direct effect on fruit yield.

The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during March to June, 2014 to study the genetic variability, correlation and path co-efficient analysis for yield and yield contributing characters of maize. In this experiment 25 maize genotypes were used as experimental materials. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Mean performance, variability, correlation matrix and path analysis on different yield contributing characters and yield of maize genotypes were estimated. The highest grain yield/plant (272.21 g) was recorded in the genotype of BARI Hybrid Maize-6, whereas the lowest grain yield/plant (180.40 g) from the genotype of NZ-003. Phenotypic coefficient of variation was higher than the genotypic coefficient of variation for all the yield contributing traits. In correlation study, significant positive association was recorded for grain yield/plant of maize genotypes with plant height (0.235), tassel height (0.359), number of grains/cob (0.854), cob length (0.390), cob diameter (0.313) and weight of 1000-grains (0.689). Path analysis revealed that days to initiation of male flower had positive direct effect (0.132), days to initiation of female flower had negative direct effect (-0.254), days to maturity had positive direct effect (0.178), plant height had positive direct effect (0.314), tassel height had positive direct effect (0.234), ear length had positive direct effect (0.197), number of grains/cob had negative direct effect (-0.095), cob length had positive direct effect (0.167), cob diameter had positive direct effect (0.168) and that weight of 1000-grains had positive direct effect (0.217) on yield / plant.

Path coefficient analysis was carried out in tropical pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne) for yield per plant as a function of number of fruit per plant and weight per fruit, using phenotypic and genetic correlations from two diallels: one using five varieties (variety diallel) and a second using five S1 lines derived from the varieties (line diallel). A randomized complete block design with five replications was used to evaluate 15 genotypes from each diallel, not including reciprocals. Direct effects were 300 to 500% greater than indirect effects in the line diallel. In contrast, direct effects were only 17 to 68% greater than indirect effects in the variety diallel. Effects (direct and indirect) were greater (17 to 500%) when genetic correlations rather than phenotype correlations (42 to 440%) were used in the path analysis. Fruit weight showed a greater effect on yield than did number of fruit, with values between 3.2 to 4.9 times the residual effects. Fruit weight and number of fruit can be used as selection criteria to increase yield in tropical pumpkin.

Twenty-eight genotypes of lettuce including check cultivars viz., Simpson Black Seeded and Great Lakes were grown in a RCBD with three replications during Rabi 2011-12 and 2012-13 at Vegetable Experimental Research Farm, Nauni, Solan H.P. to estimate the parameters of genetic variability, correlation and path analysis undernaturally ventilated polyhouse. Analysis of variance showed highly significant differences among genotypes for all the characters under study. Variability revealed that phenotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV) in general were higher than the corresponding genotypic co-efficient of variation (GCV) for all the characters. High co-efficient of variability were found for heading percentage (37.00% and 36.01%), incidence of sclerotinia rot (63.49% and 61.475%), gray mould (90.13% and 88.08%) and yield per plot (39.55% and 33.09%) indicated wider range of variation and offer better scope for improvement through selection. High heritability estimates coupled with moderate genetic gain were observed for yield and other horticultural traits. Correlation study indicated that yield per plot was positively correlated with gross and net head weight, seed germination, seed vigour index-I & II, 1000-seeds weight and also showed maximum direct effects towards yield per plot. The path co-efficient analysis revealed that net head weight has maximum positive direct effect on yield per plot followed by gross head weight, days to marketable maturity, seed germination, 1000-seeds weight, head shape index and incidence of sclerotinia rot. While, negative direct effect of number of non-wrapper leaves and incidence of gray mould was observed on yield. The new multicoloured cultivars indigenous and exotic mostly procured from CGN, Netherlands , identified for commercial cultivation under protected conditions in the mid hills of North Western Himalayas, may act as a substitute to the old cultivars with good quality and higher yielding potential.

ABSTRACT Chili high yield is the target of plant breeding. High yielding chili selection can be done through direct selection of yield characters and indirectly through other characters. Indirect selection is more efficient than the selection of one character. This research aims to study the relationship between quantitative characters with yield as well as obtaining the selection criteria. Correlation analysis results showed that the fruit weight, fruit diameter, pericarp thickness, leaf width, and leaf length were positively correlated and were very significant on yield. Based on the path analysis, characters that have a positive direct effect on yield are fruit weight, fruit diameter, leaf width, and leaf length, while pericarp thickness had a negative direct effect but had a large indirect effect on yield.

To obtain more productive soybean genotypes, it is essential to know the contribution of each agronomic trait to the productivity of soybeans. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation and path analysis in thirty genotypes of soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) for eleven traits. The study was conducted in March-June 2019, in an experimental area located at Agro Techno Park, which belongs to Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, East Java Province, Indonesia. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Analysis of correlation showed that the number of branches, number of filled pods, number of seeds per plant, weight of 100 seeds, and weight of seeds per plant had a positive correlation value to the yield. Path analysis showed that the number of seeds per plant had a high positive, direct effect on the yield. The plant height, number of branches, fresh weight and dry weight had an indirect effect on the yield. Based on the result, the number of seeds per plant can be selected as one of the selection criteria in a soybean breeding program to obtain a high-yield soybean variety.

Background: Blackgram despite of being a highly nutritious and short duration legume crop, it is not cultivated on large scales due to many constraints. Considering this, the research was aimed to develop blackgram genotypes with wider adaptability, genetic variability and high yielding potential by studying nature and magnitude of association among yield and related traits for effective production. Methods: The present investigation was carried out at Experimental Farm of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding, College of Agriculture, CSK HPKV, Palampur (H.P.) to assess the character association and direct and indirect effects among yield and related traits in 14 crosses and ten parents for 11 quantitative characters during Kharif 2018 and 2019 in randomized complete block design with three replications. Result: Correlation studies highlighted that seed yield per plant had significant and positive association with pods per plant, biological yield per plant, pod length, plant height and 100 seed-weight at genotypic and phenotypic levels in both generations. Study of path analysis revealed that biological yield per plant and pods per plant exhibited maximum positive direct and indirect effects to the total association between yield and other component traits in both the generations. These traits could be suggested as best selection indices on priority basis which would be commendable to improve the performance of genotypes during breeding programme.

AbstractThis study was carried out to determine the correlation between agronomic traits and seed yield of sunflower hybrids and also to determine the direct and indirect effects of analyzed traits on seed yield. The primary task in sunflower breeding programs is to increase the seed yield, as well as create new hybrids with high potential for seed and oil yield. The experiment was set up according to randomized block design during two growing seasons (2013 and 2014), on research area of the Faculty of Agriculture, “Goce Delchev” University – Shtip, in Ovche Pole locality, Republic of Macedonia. As an experimental material 20 sunflower hybrids were used. 1,000 seed weight, seed length and width, oil content, oleic acid content and seed yield were analyzed. 1,000 seed weight showed positive and significant correlation with seed width, seed length and seed yield. On the other hand, negative and significant correlation was obtained between 1,000 seed weight and oil content. 1,000 seed weight expressed the highest positive direct effect on seed yield. The results obtained from correlation and path analysis showed that the efficiency in the selection of seed yield in sunflower hybrids should increased through the selection of 1,000 seed weight.

Problem: The correlation co-efficient indicates the nature of association among the different traits, path analysis splits the correlation co-efficient into measure of direct and indirect effects thus providing understanding of the direct and indirect association of each character towards yield. Methods: An experiment on correlation and path analysis involving thirty F1 and six parents in muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) was carried out at Department of Horticulture, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Vellore district, Tamil Nadu India. Results: The fruit yield per plant had exhibited highly significant and positive correlation with individual fruit weight (0.845), fruit diameter (0.656), fruit length (0.536) and flesh thickness (0.503). Path coefficient analysis revealed that the characters viz., fruit weight exerted the highest positive direct effect (1.034) on fruit yield per vine followed by number of fruits per vine (0.497), days to first female flower anthesis (0.088), vine length (0.072) and fruit length (0.070). Conclusion: The fruit yield per plant can be improved by making selection of these traits in yield improvement programme.

Abstract The genotypic and phenotypic correlation and path analysis of plant biomass, plant height, stem diameter and other biomass component traits were analyzed in thirty provenances of Bombax ceiba. In general, the magnitude of genotypic correlations was higher than phenotypic correlations. Stem diameter and plant biomass showed highly significant genotypic correlations with all the traits except the number of secondary branches and plant biomass with leaf biomass. Plant height had the highest positive direct effect on plant biomass followed by the number of primary branches/plant and the number of leaves/plant. On the basis of this study, a higher plant biomass would be achieved through direct selection based on plant height, the number of primary branches and the number of leaves/plant. Therefore, the study is important in selection of traits of economic importance based on other characters, whose direct effect is not visible.
