Context : It has long been customary among anatomists, anthropologists and forensic experts to judge the sex of the skeletal material by non-metric observations. Afterward the study of sexual divergence has been based upon actual measurements in different bones. The study in relation to metrical data on bone is very few in our country. The study was planned to observe the differences of sacra between male and female in respect to measurement of alar length and auricular index of sacrum. The findings of this study might be useful in providing morphometrical data that can be used by anatomists, forensic experts, anthropologists, orthopedic surgeons and neurologists for proper initiative in their respective fields. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional, analytical type of study was performed in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from January 2011 to December 2011. A total of 172 (one hundred seventy two) adult human dry sacra of unknown sex was assessed. The study samples were distributed in male and female sex groups by discriminant function analysis. All the samples were studied morphologically. Length of ala and auricular surface were measured with the help of digital slide calipers. Results: The mean length value of ala was greater in female than male (P<0.001). The difference between the mean value of alar index in male and female was significant (P >0.05). The mean value of auricular index was higher in male than female and the difference was statically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: The sacrum can be used for sexual dimorphism as is usual in anthropological work. The knowledge of alar length and auricular index of sacrum is essential in medico-legal practice for sex determination of an individual. Context: The variation in anatomical features of sacral hiatus and the dorsal wall of sacral canal is related to its clinical application in caudal epidural anesthesia. Through the sacral hiatus, it is employed in operation in the anal region and on the external genital organs, as well as cystoscopic examination of male. Continuous caudal anesthesia is also used in obstetrics during parturition for better cervical dilatation and shortening the first stage of labor. Methods: The present study was performed on 172 (one hundred seventy two) adult human dry sacra of unknown sex. The study samples were distributed in male and female sex groups by discriminant function analysis. The study was cross sectional analytical type and was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January 2011 to December 2011. The various landmarks of sacral hiatus were measured with the help of digital slide calipers. Results: The mean length of sacral hiatus in male and female was found 26.38±12.02 mm and 25.63±10.46 mm respectively. The mean anterior-posterior diameter of sacral hiatus at the apex was found 4.76±1.73 mm in male and 4.92±2.13 mm in female. Transverse width of the sacral hiatus at the base found 17.29±3.89 mm in male and 18.01±3.70 mm in female. Different in shape of sacral hiatus between male and female found statistically not significant. Location of apex of sacral hiatus was found highest in number at the level of 4th sacral vertebra (60.20%) and maximum location of base of the sacral hiatus was at the level of 5th sacral vertebra (91.20%). The sacral hiatus has anatomical variations and understanding of these variations may improve the success of caudal epidural anesthesia. Context : The bones of the body are the last to pass away after death, next to enamel of teeth. Hence, in establishing the personal identity with respect to sex, age and stature, medico legal experts, anatomists and anthropologists use the skeletal materials for giving their opinion. Sex-dependent differences have been noted in the pelvic bone anatomy, and so differences exist in male and female sacrum. The aim of this study was to collect data regarding morphometric measurements of maximum length and breadth of sacrum and to find out possible variations of sacral index in different individuals in relation to sex. Material and Methods: A Cross-sectional, analytical type of study was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, on 172 (one hundred seventy two) adult human dry sacra of unknown sex. The study samples were distributed in male and female sex groups by discriminant function analysis. All the samples were studied morphologically. Sacral length and breadth were measured with the help of digital slide calipers. Result : The mean sacral index in male and female were 97.88±6.16 % and 112.69±10.17 % respectively. Study on the Thicknesses and the Girths of Tendoachilles of Human Cadavers. Background: Tendoachilles is the chief planter flexor of the ankle joint. It provides elastic energy storage in walking and running. The present study was planned to collect data to find out possible variations of thickness and girth between right and left leg of both male and female. Materials and methods: A cross sectional analytical type of study was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from July 2013 to June 2014. The data was collected from both right and left tendoachilles of 60 human cadaver taken from Anatomy Department of different Government and Nongovernment Medical Colleges in Dhaka city. After dissection thickness and girth of tendoachilles was measured and recorded. Results: Among 60 human cadaver, 30 are male and 30 are female. The mean thickness of tendoachilles was greater in right leg than in left leg at its junction with gastrocnemius in male, (P<0.001) at the level of 4 cm above its junction with calcaneus and at the level of its junction with calcaneus in both male and female. No significant difference was observed in the measurement of thickness of right and left tendoachilles at the level of its junction with gastrocnemius in female. Mean girth of tendoachilles was greater in right leg than in left leg at its junction with gastrocnemius, at the level of 4 cm above its junction with calcaneus and at the level of its junction with calcaneus in both male and female. Conclusions: The present study revealed that thickness and girth of tendoachilles was greater in right leg than in left leg which were statistically significant. BACKGROUND Femur is the longest and strongest bone of the human body. It also takes relatively longer time to disintegrate after death, hence morphometric analysis of skeletal remains of femoral head can be considered for the determination of age and sex for forensic expert, anthropologist as well as anatomist. The present study was an attempt to establish sex of a skeleton by the help of femoral head diameters which will be of great help in medico-legal and anthropometric studies. METHODS The present study was carried out in the S C B Medical College Cuttack from May 2019 to June 2020 by taking 84 dried and intact femora. The vertical head diameter of femoral head and head circumference were measured by the vernier’ s caliper and measuring tape in centimeters. RESULTS The result showed significant difference in the head circumference and the vertical diameter of head of femur of the male and female femora. It was found that the mean femoral head circumference of the male was 13.296 cm with a “S.D” of 0.8694 cm and female was 12.023 cm with a “S.D” of 0.73 cm and vertical diameter of male was 4.1520 cm with a “SD” of 0.3635 cm and that of female femora was 3.7231 cm with a “S.D” of 0.2264 cm respectively. CONCLUSIONS There was a significant difference in the head circumference and the vertical diameter of head of femur of the male and female femora which determines sexual dimorphism. Background: The sub-carinal angle is an angle formed between the main right bronchus and leftbronchus clearly seen in adequately exposed chest radiograph, normally at the level of 5th thoracicvertebrae. Objective: To measure sub-carinal angle in relationship to different age, sex and body mass index inthe adult. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Radio diagnosis and Imaging at BPKIHS, Dharan from 27th April to 6th August 2017. Sub-carinal angle was measured on the normal chest radiograph in 392 adult patients. The data were analyzed using SPSS Version 11.5 and descriptive statistics percentage, Mean, Standard Deviation were calculated. For inferential statistics, Independent ‘t’ test and Pearson’s correlation were applied. Results: The sub-carinal angle ranged from 39°- 81.1° with mean value 60.17°+7.81°. The mean subcarinalangle for the male was 59.17°+8.19° and for female was 60.62°+7.49°. The mean sub-carinalangle was wider in female than male in our study; however, the difference in sub-carinal angle between male and female was statistically not significant (p> 0.05). There was negative correlationbetween sub-carinal angle and age (r= -0.168, p <0.01). The sub-carinal angle was positivelycorrelated with BMI (r= 0.100, p< 0.05). Conclusion: In our study, the mean sub-carinal angle was 60.17° ± 7.81°. The mean sub-carinal angle difference between male and female was statistically non-significant. There was negative correlation of sub-carinal angle with age and positive correlation with BMI. The reference value obtained from this study will be helpful to diagnose abnormal sub-carinal angle due to various pathologies.

Background: The present study was conducted for analysis of the morphometry shape and determination of sex by foramen Magnum. Methods: After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria 30 dried human skull of unknown age and sex were slected for present study from the Department of anatomy, S.M.S. Medical College, Jaipur, Rajasthan. In case of skull bones, all 30 cranial bases were visually assessed for FM shape classification. Each FM shape was classified into one of the 8 types: oval, egg, round, tetragonal, pentagonal, hexagonal, combination of 2 different semicircles and irregular. Results: The mean anteroposterior diameter of foramen magnum male and female skull bones were found to be 37.17±1.76 mm  and 33.92±3.50 mm respectively.The mean transverse diameter of foramen mgnum in male and female skull bones were found to be 29.49±2.68 mm and 29.38±2.47 mm respectively.The mean area of foramen magnum male and female skull bones were found to be 818.05±119.66 mm² and   847.57±105.85 mm² respectively.The mean index of foramen magnum in male and female skull bones were found to be 84.00±5.41 and 80.27±5.79 respectively.Overall skull bones showed a medium type of foramen magnum index . Conclusion: We concluded that the several anatomic parameters such as shape and dimensions of foramen magnum should be taken into consideration during surgery involving the craniovertebral junction. The knowledge regarding normal physical measurement of heart is very important for proper diagnosis and management of various cardiac diseases. Heart disease is a predominant cause of disability and death among all industrialized nations. This study is to establish a standard data of different external parameters of heart of adult Bangladeshi population. The study was conducted at Department of Anatomy, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka from July 2009 to December 2009. The formalin fixed cadaveric 60 (sixty) (n=60) human hearts, 41 (forty one) male and 19 (nineteen) female were taken. The length, breadth and weight of the heart were measured and the data was analyzed statistically. The mean value of the length of the heart in male was 10.35±0.62 cm and female was 10.22±0.90 cm. The mean value of the breadth of the heart was 7.45±0.73 cm and 7.35±0.65 cm in male and female respectively. The mean value of the weight of the heart was 174.15±15.49 gm in male, where as for female the mean was 171.58±19.16 gm. The comparison of values of above mentioned variables between male and female were done by unpaired students test and it was statistically not significant.University Heart Journal Vol. 10, No. 2, July 2014; 78-80

This cross sectional, descriptive study was done in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from January to December 2009, to determine the proportion of cortex and medulla of the ovary in di_erent age group of Bangladeshi women. This study was based on collection of 140 ovaries of 70 unclaimed female dead bodies from the morgue of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age-groups including A (10-13 years), B (14-45 years) & C (46-52 years). Histological slides were prepared by using routine haematoxylin and eosin stain. Ten best prepared histological slides from each age group were examined to determine the thickness of the cortex and medulla & proportion of the thickness of the cortex and the medulla of the ovary were expressed in percentages. The mean proportion of the cortex and the medulla of the right ovary were found 80.83±0.58% and 19.17±0.58% in group A, 86.95±1.14% and 13.05±1.14% in group B, 70.53±1.53% and 29.47±1.53% in group C respectively. The mean proportion of the cortex and the medulla of the left ovary were found 80.63±0.58% and 19.37±0.58% in group A, 86.78±1.14% and 13.22±1.14% in group B, 70.41±1.50% and 29.59±1.50% in group C respectively. The difference in mean proportion of the cortex and the medulla was not signi_cant in between the ovaries. However, the difference in mean proportion of the cortex and the medulla of the ovary between group A & group B, group A & group C and group B & group C were statistically significant.Bangladesh Med J. 2015 Jan; 44 (1): 8-10

ABSTRACT Objective: The present study is intended to add a new parameter that would be useful in orthodontic clinical evaluation, treatment planning, and determination of vertical dimension (at occlusion). Materials and Methods: Standardized videographic recording of 79 subjects during posed smile was captured. Each video was then cut into 30 photos using the free studio software. The widest commissure-to-commissure posed smile frame (posed smile width [SW]) was selected as one of 10 or more frames showing an identical smile. Lower third of the face is measured from subnasale to soft tissue menton using a digital vernier caliper. Two values were then compared. Ratio between lower facial height and posed SW was calculated. Results: The co-relation between smiling width and lower facial height was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.01). The ratio of lower facial height and smiling width was calculated as 1.0016 with a standard deviation (SD) = 0.04 in males and 1.0301 with an SD = 0.07 in females. The difference between the mean lower facial height in males and females was statistically significant with a t = 10.231 and P = 0.000. The difference between the mean smiling width in males and females was also statistically significant with a t = 5.653 and P = 0.000. Conclusion: In class I subjects with pleasing appearance, normal facial proportions, normal overjet and overbite, and average Frankfort mandibular angle, the lower facial height (subnasale to soft tissue menton) is equal to posed SW.

Context: A cross-sectional descriptive type of study was designed to find out the difference in weight of the parathyroid glands of Bangladeshi people in relation to age and sex and to compare with the previous studies. Methods: This study was done in the Department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka, from January to December 2008. The study was performed on 207 post mortem human parathyroid glands collected from 60 unclaimed dead bodies which were in the morgue under examination in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. The samples were divided into three age-groups including group A (10-30 years), group B (31-60 years) & group C (61-90 years) and the weight of the parathyroids were measured and recorded. Results: The mean weight of the right superior parathyroid glands were 13.43±13.77 mg in group A, 13.86±19.15 mg in group B and 9.25±5.12 mg in group C in males and 16.00±6.69 mg in group A and 8.57±5.97 mg in group B in females respectively. The mean weight of the right inferior parathyroids were 17.78±13.94 mg, 16.75±15.67 mg and 23.00±11.53 mg in group A, B and C respectively in males and 26.00±4.18 mg in group A and 15.20±4.32 mg in group B in females. The mean weight of the left superior parathyroid glands were 13.63±6.08 mg in group A, 10.58±7.57 mg in group B and 11.00±3.74 mg in group C in males and 16.20±7.89 mg in group A and 8.29±5.47 mg in group B in females respectively. The mean weight of the left inferior parathyroid gland was 26.11±24.29 mg, 15.81±10.28 mg and 25.25±25.28 mg in group A, B and C respectively in males and 32.25±13.82 mg in group A and 13.29±5.41 mg in group B in females. No difference was found in the weight of superior parathyroid glands at right side between sexes and age groups excepting in superior and inferior parathyroid glands at left side between group A & B (p<0.05).
