An experiment was conducted in Jamalpur during the Rabi seasons of 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 to investigate the yield and scab infection of potato variety Diamant under different irrigation frequencies and quantities. Three irrigation intervals, 7, 12 and 17 days along with three levels of water quantities equaling 50, 100 and 150% of depleted soil moisture were tested for yield and scab infection of potato tubers. It was observed in 2004-2005 that irrigation interval of 12 days and watering at 100% depletion of soil moisture produced the highest fresh and total yields of 24.64 t/ha and 27.56 t/ha, respectively, whereas irrigation interval of 7 days and watering at 150% of depleted soil moisture produced the lowest fresh and total yields (21.68 t/ha and 25.98 t/ha, respectively). In 2005-2006, irrigation interval of 12 days and watering at 100% depletion of soil moisture produced the fresh and total yields of 26.27 t/ha and 27.41 t/ha, respectively, and were not found statistically different from those obtained under water application of 150% depleted soil moisture and irrigation interval of 12 days. The scab infected tubers were found the highest 4.30 t/ha in 2004-2005 and 2.97 t/ha in 2005-2006 for water application of 150% depleted soil moisture and 7 days irrigation intervals. On the eve of changing climate, it is expected that there will be a competition to reallocate water for agricultural, industrial and urban needs in near future. Thus, in view of the increased water scarcity, an adequate management for water application is required to maximize water use and increase yield. In this regard, a field trial comprising four deficit drip irrigation treatments on potato crop under drip irrigation was conducted in filed condition using RCB design with four replications. Cropwat 8.0 program was used to determine the interval and depth of next irrigation at 15, 30, 45 60% management allowable depletion (MAD) of soil moisture. The outcomes indicated that irrigation to potato crop at 30% MAD level gave the highest water productivity (17.28 kg/m3) followed by 60, 15 and 45% MAD levels. Maximum %age of medium sized tuber was achieved by applying irrigation to potato crop at 60% MAD level (65.70) followed by 30% MAD level (65.5), 45% MAD (64.0) and 15% MAD level (60.50). The incidence of scab was found 2.50%, 2.75%, 3.25% and 3.75% in potato tubers at 15, 30, 45 and 60% MAD level, respectively. Thus, growers can save the water by adopting this water saving technique without reduction in tuber yield. For proper adaptation of new technique and practice, common farmer of Pakistan should be educated in term of visits to govt. research institutions and adoptive research farms to understand the right step to words better yield.

In swamp distribution, dominance and survival of a species is very much governed by the soil moisture and period of flooding. The present study was conducted to classify the communities and plant species, and to have an idea about various associations of plants present in the swamp with respect to soil moisture. Two way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) classified the communities into four and plant species into eleven groups. The communities with least soil moisture were the first to be segregated and with highest soil moisture last. Similarly, the species growing in drier condition was clustered separately from the moisture loving indigenous species. COMPOSIÇÃO DE PERFIS RADIAIS DE DISTRIBUIÇÃO DE ÁGUA DE ASPERSORES  Giuliani do Prado; Alberto ColomboDepartamento de Engenharia, Universidade Federal de Lavras, Lavras, MG, [email protected]  1 RESUMO Este trabalho descreve um procedimento de composição do perfil radial de aspersores que operam com dois bocais. Foram determinados na bancada de ensaios de aspersores da Universidade Federal de Lavras, em Lavras/MG, os valores de vazão e perfil radial do aspersor PLONA-RL250 operando, individualmente, com os bocais principais 14 e28 mme com os bocais auxiliares 5, 6 e7 mm, e operando, nas diferentes seis combinações de bocal auxiliar e principal do aspersor, sob cinco pressões de serviço (292, 392, 490, 588 e 696 kPa). No processo de composição do perfil radial realizado, ajustando a vazão dos bocais auxiliar e principal, operando individualmente, a vazão do aspersor operando com o conjunto de bocais auxiliar e principal, verificou-se um coeficiente de determinação médio de 88,57% entre as intensidades de precipitação adimensionais dos perfis radiais compostos com os perfis radiais do conjunto. Na relação linear, ajustada, entre os valores de uniformidade de equipamentos autopropelidos de irrigação, obtidos com os perfis radiais compostos e do conjunto, a inclinação da reta foi igual a 44°12’com um erro relativo médio de 2,34%. Estes resultados mostram que o procedimento de composição do perfil radial de aspersores não influencia, de maneira significativa, na uniformidade de aplicação de água de aspersores. UNITERMOS: bocais do aspersor, vazão do aspersor, uniformidade de irrigação.  PRADO, G. DO; COLOMBO, A. SPRINKLER WATER DISTRIBUTION COMPOSITIONS  2 ABSTRACT This paper described a procedure to compose a sprinkler pattern for a sprinkler that operates with two nozzles. To compose the pattern, discharge values and patterns of the PLONA-RL250 sprinkler were determined at the sprinkler test bench of the Universidade Federal de Lavras, in Lavras/MG. The tests were conducted with all possible combinations using 14mm and28 mmmain nozzles and the 5, 6 and7 mmauxiliary nozzles as well as with each nozzle functioning individually. Five working pressures (294, 392, 490, 588 and 686 kPa) were used for each nozzle configuration. In the pattern composition process, by adjusting the main and auxiliary nozzle discharges operating individually, and by adjusting  the sprinkler discharge operating with the corresponding pair of main and auxiliary nozzles, it was verified that the average determination coefficient was 88.57% between the dimensionless water application rate of the composed and pair patterns. In the adjusted linear relation, between the uniformity values of a travel irrigation machine obtained from the composed and pair patterns, the inclination was 44° 12' with an average relative error of 2.34%. These results show that the procedure to compose a sprinkler pattern for sprinklers does not influence significantly the water application uniformity of sprinklers. KEY WORDS: sprinkler nozzles, sprinkler flow rate, irrigation uniformity

Effect of soil moisture on stomatal frequency and distribution of mustard was studied. The irrigated plants had significantly higher number of stomata on both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of leaf than the rainfed plants. Potato variety Agria was cultivated in different fertilisation and/or irrigation regimes. Tuber damage after impact was studied two months after the harvest with aim to find some relation between the regime of cultivation and impact test tuber damage. It was found that tuber cracking and/or crushing belongs to the most frequent mechanisms of damage masking usual bruising in many cases. Most severe tuber cracking was observed for cultivation with irrigation and classical methods of fertilisation. On the other hand, bruising was most frequent in case without any irrigation and fertilisation and in cases used for fertilisation the pig slurry. In every cultivation regime the bruising was more pronounced in narrower tuber side in comparison to the wider flat side.

Subsoil moisture accumulation due to cultivation and particularly summerfallowing is considered as an important causative agent of dryland salinity. However, few studies have been conducted to quantify the magnitude of this accumulation. The amount of additional moisture that had accumulated under cultivated land as compared to adjacent native prairie was determined at two sites in Southern Alberta. In comparison to noncultivated sites, a total of 74.0 cm of additional moisture was found under the cultivated area of a Dark Brown Chernozem and 36.2 cm under a Brown Chernozem to a depth of 6 m. Only relatively insignificant changes in salt content were found. Key words: Dryland salinity, soil moisture, soluble salts
