Nitrogen is the most limiting nutrient for rice. Modern high yielding rice varieties may have differences in accumulating and using N from soil and applied fertilizer. A field experiment with 8 rice genotypes was conducted during 2008 wet season (T.Aman season) to study the effect of different rates of N fertilization on the yield performance and nitrogen nutrition under irrigated condition. Among the tested varieties/lines, BR7155-20-1-3 produced the significantly highest grain yield of 5.04 t/ha at N30 level followed by Swarna (4.66 t/ha) at the same level of N with similar growth duration (140 days). Agronomic efficiency of added N ranged from 0.7 to 23.3 for the promising line   BR7155-20-1-3 and 3.3 to 27.0 for variety Swarna. Grain yield at No was the highest in BR7155-20-1-3 followed by the variety Swarna and the lowest in BR7870-5 *(Nils)- I 0-HR8. Percent nitrogen recovery ranged from 50 to 63 for variety Swarna and 13 to 30 for promising line BR7155-20-1-3. Rice (Oryza sativa L) is the most important staple food crop in Nepal, but current yields are low and total production varies, mostly due to drought. To evaluate high yielding and drought tolerant rice genotypes in typical rainfed lowland conditions, a participatory varietal selection trials was conducted with farmers in farmer’s field at Sundarbazar, Lamjung, Nepal during the wet season 2009 and 2010. Trials were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with six replications. Results obtained from two years’ experiment indicated that the genotypes IR-74371-54-1 and IR74371-70-1 matured at the same duration as the local check Radha-4 (120-123 days growth duration). Both genotypes had a high average chlorophyll content (SPAD reading of 15.9-16.1), were medium tall (110-112 cm), non-lodging, had a high number of filled grains and little sterility, and a high grain yield (mean yield 5.0 and 4.8 t ha-1, respectively). They also had the highest root length (22.4-26.2 cm) and root weight (9.5-10 g hill-1) which could tolerate more drought than the other genotypes tested. The maximum cost/benefit ratio was found in IR-74371-54-1 (1:1.72) followed by IR-74371-70-1 (1:1.66) and IR-74371-46-1-1 (1:1.65). All three lines were highly preferred by farmers in preference rankings during field visits and were released in Nepal in 2011 as Sookhadhan-2, Sookhadhan-3 and Sookhadhan-1 varieties, respectively. The water saving technology for lowland rice cultivation was very crucial because of in the future irrigation water become scarce and competed with other sectors. The lowering of the availability of irrigation water had the impact for sustainability of rice production. The review of the paper described the pattern of basic water requirement, yield responses of several lowland rice varieties to moisture stress, days interval irrigation and the alternatives of water saving techniques for improving yield and water productivity. The pattern of the actual water requirement (ET+P&S) showed the maximum value of 8.8 mm/day (1.02 lt/sec/ha) for high yielding varieties (HYV) that occurred from heading to 50% flowering. Under limited water supply, irrigation water should be applied that period to prevent yield loss. Soil moisture stress at moderate level (- 0.5 bar) from heading to full flowering was significantly decreased yield about 30% when compared with the yield of continuously flooded 3 cm depth. This period was a critical period of HYV to soil moisture stress. For rotational irrigation purposes, information of the optimum days interval irrigation was important. It was found that 3 days irrigation interval was a critical limit for HYV to achieve higher yield. The SRI model of rice cultivation had the lowest rice yield in the lowland soil, poor drainage, clay soil texture and low permeability. The modified irrigation of the SRI plus fertilizer N based on LCC readings gave a greater yield as well as water productivity. The hybrid and NPT line rice varieties had higher yield components and grain yield than Ciherang variety. Ciherang variety was not favor to grown for the wet season, it was more productive when grown in dry season even with AWD irrigation model. The plant spacing of 25 cm x 25 cm gave higher number of panicle/hill and number of spikelet/panicle under both AWD and continuously flooded 3 cm depth for dry and wet season consistently. The fertilizer N management based on SSNM with low and high rates for the early vegetative stage were not significantly affected all yield components and grain yield. The AWD irrigation could save irrigation water about 18% when compared to the continuously flooded conditions.The grain yield of the hybrid, inbred and NPT line rice varieties was higher for the dry season than wet season under both AWD irrigation and continuous flooding consistently.

Adaptive variety and organic fertilizer are important components for rice cultural practices in a spesific agroecology. The research objectives were (1) to clarify the direct and the residual effect of manure on grain yield of rice, (2) to identify rice varieties most suitable for dry and for wet season planting. The research was conducted at Sukamandi Exp. Farm, West Java, during dry season (DS) of 2010 and wet season (WS) of 2010/2011, using a split-plot design with three replications. The main plots of DS experiment consisted of (1) recommended dosage of NPK (115 kg N + 50 kg P2O5 + 50 kg K2O/ha) and (2) 80% dosage of NPK + 5 t manure/ha. The WS experiment, main plots were (1) recommended NPK and (2) the residue of manure given in DS + 80% of the NPK. The subplots were fifteen improved varieties, each planted on plot 3.4 m x 5.4 m with 20 cm x 20 cm plant spacing. Data were collected for agronomic variables and grain yield. The DS 2010 experiment was attacked by brown planthopper (BPH), only two varieties, Inpari-8 and Inpari-13 were resistant, each yielded around 6 t/ha, while thirteen varieties were susceptible, yielded between 0.14 t to 3.9 t/ha. Application of 5 t manure/ha increased the averaged of biomass and grain yields by 9% and 10%, respectively, but were not consistent among varieties. In WS 2010/2011 experiment, the residual manure + 80% NPK decreased the averaged grain yield, but there was a significant interaction effect between fertilizer x variety. Seven varieties yielded less, six varieties yielded similar, and two varieties yielded more on the residual manure treatment, compared to that on no-manure treatment. Biomass weight, plant height, days to flowering, and days to harvesting, each was significantly correlated with grain yield. Five varieties were identified as suitable for WS planting, namely: Inpari-3, Inpari-10, Inpari-7, Ciherang, and Mekongga. When outbreak of BPH was suspected in the DS, Inpari-8 and Inpari-13 were suggested for planting. Suitable variety(ies) for season specific planting would optimize productivity, conversely, planting of unsuitable rice variety, during either DS or WS planting, would decreased the land production capacity.

An experiment was conducted using nine hybrid rice genotypes along with two inbred standard check varieties in five different locations of Bangladesh to assess their stability in terms of grain yield and maturity in diverse environments. For this, adaptability, stability, genotype × environment (G×E) interaction effect for grain yield and maturity of 11 rice varieties in five agro ecological zones in Bangladesh were assessed during T. Aman season of 2015. The analysis of variance for growth duration and grain yield (t/ha) for genotypes, environment and genotype-environment interaction were highly significant at 1% level of probability indicating the variable response of genotypes and environments. The hybrid genotypes IR79156A/BRRI20R, BRRI hybrid dhan3, BRRI33R/BRRI26R, BRRI hybrid dhan4, standard check variety BRRI dhan49 and BR11 had high yield performance and widely adapted to all environments and these were non sensitive to environmental interactive forces, while the hybrids BRRI7A/BRRI31R, IR79156A/BasmatiR and SL-8 were sensitive to environmental interaction. Environment such as Gazipur (E1) and Faridpur (E3) having positive IPCA1 score and positive interaction with the hybrids BRRI7A/BRRI13R, SL-8H and IR79156A/BasmatiR were considered as the favourable environments for these hybrids.Bangladesh J. The growth of two rice varieties of contrasting plant type and of different origin was compared at two row spacings under wet season tropical conditions in northern Australia. The short, erect-leaved variety SML 81b responded to the closer spacing by producing fewer tillers and a smaller leaf area per plant during active vegetative growth. The tropical leafy variety Sircna did not exhibit any compensatory reduction of the growth of individual plants, and dense crop growth and high leaf area indices resulted at the closer spacing. The heavy vegetative growth of Sircna was not reflected in grain yield at harvest, while the higher tiller number per unit area of SML 81b resulted in a higher grain yield at the closer spacing. The agricultural implications of the results are discussed.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur, in boro season to determine the optimum planting date and to select the varieties having high yield potential. Traditional aromatic photoperiod sensitive fine rice varieties; Kalijira, Kataribhog, Chinigura and Badshabhog were transplanted from 10 December and continued up to 25 January, both in 2000 and 2001 years, at an interval of 15 days. Forty-day old seedlings were transplanted spaced at 20 cm x 20 cm. Results exhibited that plant tallness, number of tillers and dry matter increased with the advancement of planting dates. On the contrary, the number of panicles, grains panicle-1, panicle length, grain yield, straw yield and growth duration decreased with delaying of planting dates. The intermediate short stature plant type of Chinigura exhibited higher number of panicles (300-331 m-2) and comparatively heavier individual grain (12.25-12.31 g), consequently gave higher grain yield (2.79-3.53 t ha-1 ) planted with in December. However, in late planted situation in 10 January Kalijira exhibited higher number of panicles, grains panicle-1, resulted higher grain yield than the rest of the varieties. Thus, cultivation of traditional aromatic fine rice Chinigura and Kalijira have the potentiality to produced higher grain yield when planted in early December in Boro season. SUMMARYField experiments conducted during wet and dry seasons with Ratna and Jaya varieties of rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) indicated that the use of Azolla pinnata as fertilizer increased growth in terms of number of tillers, leaf area index, dry-matter production, grain yield, N uptake and its accumulation in different plant parts. Azolla incorporation before planting in addition to 30 kg N/ha produced higher grain yields of both the rice varieties than 60 kg N / h a during the two seasons, while Azolla grown as an intercrop with rice plus 30 kg N/ha was superior to the 60 kg N treatment in grain production of Jaya during the wet season. Azolla incorporation before planting and also once intercropped with rice produced more grain yield than 60 kg N during the wet season. Among Azolla treatments, Azolla twice intercropped with rice produced comparatively lower grain yield. Azolla application increased the number of panicles/m2, number of grains/panicle and reduced sterility during both seasons. The N uptake of the rice crop in the treatments of Azolla incorporation before planting or intercropped once with rice in combination with 30 kg N/ha was similar to that of the 60 kg N/ha whereas the treatment of Azolla incorporation before planting plus once intercropped was similar during the wet season only.

Drought is common under rainfed lowlands in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and with the uncertain onset of rains during the wet season, delay in transplanting results in yield reduction. This study aims to explore ways to ameliorate the negative influence of delayed transplanting on rice crop. A field experiment was conducted for two wet seasons to investigate the effect of seedling age and seedling density on crop performance in terms of grain yield and water productivity. The experiment was laid out in a split–split plot design in four replicates, with seedling age as the main plot, seedling density as the subplot, and varieties as the sub-sub plot. In both years, there were significant seedling age and variety interactions on grain yield. Higher grain yields were observed with older seedlings having stronger tillering propensity. Seedling density did not affect grain yields in both years, but on grain yield components. Shorter duration variety received less supplemental irrigation than longer duration varieties. Late transplanting improved total water productivity but decreased irrigation water productivity due to harvesting delay. The total crop growth duration (from sowing to maturity) was prolonged with transplanting delay. However, the total stay of plants in the main field (from transplanting to maturity) was reduced by 3–5 d for every 10 d delay in transplanting. The results indicated that a good selection of varieties and increasing seedling density improve crop performance and water productivity with delayed transplanting.

Abstract Background Rainfall is the key contributor to provide soil moisture for wet season rice (T. Aman) cultivation. Erratic rainfall often causes water shortage resulting negative impact on plant growth and grain yield. The study aimed to determine suitable transplanting window that utilize maximum rainfall for T. Aman rice. Firstly, three years field experiment were conducted in Kushtia, Bangladesh from T. Aman, 2013 to 2015, and then the findings were implemented for another two adjacent locations, Panba and Rajshahi. The field experiment considered six transplanting dates of popular cultivar BR11 (growth duration 145 days) at 7 days interval starting from 10 July to 14 August. The CROPWAT 8.0 model was used to calculate crop water requirement (CWR), effective rainfall and irrigation demand (ID) from collected weather data in each growth phase of rice. Results In all locations T. Aman rice received enormous rainfall up to vegetative phase resulting no irrigation demand in all three tested years. The early transplanting received more rainfall in reproductive phase than late planting. Thus, Irrigation demand increased at reproductive phase with delay transplanting in moderate drought prone Kushtia, Pabna and Rajshahi. A significant relationship (R2 = 0.71) observed between reproductive phase ID and grain yield, while grain yield responded weakly with the ID at ripening phase. Based on yield performance 10–24 July found suitable transplanting window for BR11 in Kushtia. Considering the relationship between ID and grain yield, 10–17 July and 10–24 July considered the best transplanting window in Pabna and Rajshahi, respectively. Conclusions Location specific suitable transplanting windows were selected considering minimum ID at reproductive phase and the maximum grain yield. Delay in transplanting demanded more irrigation and reduced grain yield. Whereas, early transplanting utilized maximum rainfall, reduced ID in reproductive stage and ensured desired grain yield.

<p>Karakteristik Agronomi dan Korelasinya pada Galurgalur Harapan Padi Tipe Baru. Dalam program pemuliaan tanaman padi diperlukan pengetahuan tentang karakter dan korelasinya dengan hasil gabah. Penelitian dilakukan untuk mempelajari karakter tanaman dan korelasinya dari 35 galur harapan PTB dengan Ciherang dan Sintanur sebagai varietas pembanding, ditanam di dua lokasi, Bogor dan Pusakanagara, pada MT 2009 (MK dan MH). Rancangan yang digunakan adalah acak kelompok dengan tiga ulangan. Bibit umur 21 hari ditanam satu bibit per lubang, jarak tanam 20 cm x 20 cm, pada petak berukuran 2 x 5 m2 per baris. Karakter tanaman bervariasi antargalur dan beberapa di antaranya berbeda nyata dengan varietas pembanding Ciherang dan Sintanur, kecuali untuk hasil gabah. B11742-RS*2-3-MR-34-1-2-1 merupakan galur dengan postur tanaman terendah, hasil gabah rendah, dan umur terpendek. Sebagian besar galur mempunyai karakter padi tipe baru (PTB). Hasil gabah berkorelasi positif dengan semua karakter, tetapi hanya berkorelasi nyata dan positif dengan tinggi tanaman, berkisar antara 91,4-120,7 cm.</p><p> </p><p><strong>Abstrak</strong></p><p>In a plant breeding program, knowledge of the character and interrelationships among yield and yield contributing characters are necessary. This study was carried out to identify the plant character and its correlation between yield-correlated traits of 35 NPT rice promising lines with Ciherang and Sintanur as check varieties, planted in two locations, Bogor and Pusakanagara and two seasons (2009 dry and wet season, DS-WS). Those lines were planted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) arrangement, in three replications. The 21-days-old seedling planted one seed per hole, spacing 20 cm x 20 cm, with a plot size of 2 x 5 m2 per line. Plant characters varied and were significantly different from Ciherang and Sintanur as check varieties except for grain yield. B11742- RS*2-3-MR-34-1-2-1 was the line that had the lowest plant height, grain yield, and the shortest growth duration. Most of the lines had character as new plant type variety. Grain yield positively correlated with all characters, but only significantly and positively correlated with plant height at range from 91.4- 120.7 cm.</p>
