Background: Following menopause there are changes in values of lipid profile parameters. Abdominal obesity has also been linked to significant metabolic abnormalities including changes in lipid parameter values. Atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) calculated as log (TG/HDL-C) has been used as some practitioners as a significant predictor of atherosclerosis. So, we designed this study to observe the pattern of lipid profile parameters and to find out AIP in postmenopausal central obese women and to compare these between postmenopausal women with central obesity and postmenopausal nonobese women. Objectives: To assess the lipid profile status and AIP of postmenopausal women with central obesity and to compare these parameters with that of postmenopausal nonobese women.Materials & Methods: This cross sectional study was carried out in the department of Biochemistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Sixty six postmenopausal women with central obesity and age matched 56 nonobese postmenopausal women were included in the study. Central obesity was defined having waist hip ratio more than 0.8 and BMI <25.0. All statistical analyses were done by SPSS 18.0. p values <0.05 were considered significant.Results: Statistically no significant difference was observed between the central obese women and nonobese women in lipid profile parameters. But AIP was found significantly higher in postmenopausal central obese women.Conclusion: Central obese postmenopausal women may be at higher risk of cardiovascular events compared with postmenopausal nonobese women in spite of no difference in lipid profile parameters as their AIP values are significantly different.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/cmoshmcj.v13i2.21064

But HDL-cholesterol was found lower and triacylglycerol was found higher in postmenopausal central obese women. Conclusion: Dyslipidaemia is a feature of postmenopausal women with central obesity. Insulin resistance associated with dyslipidemia enhances cardiovascular risk. Several atherogenic indexes have been suggested to give more precise information about the risk. The aim of our study was to estimate, which atherogenic index correlates better with parameters of insulin resistance. Furthermore, we compared the parameters of lipid metabolism and insulin resistance between smokers and non-smokers. In our cross-sectional study we enrolled 729 patients with dyslipidemia which were divided into two groups – non-smokers (586) and smokers (143). We measured lipid profile, parameters of insulin resistance (fasting glycemia, insulin, HOMA-IR, C-peptide, proinsulin) and calculated atherogenic indexes – atherogenic index of plasma (log (TAG/HDL-C), AIP), ApoB/ApoA1 index and nonHDL-C. AIP was found out to show stronger correlations with parameters of insulin resistance (p<0.001, correlation coefficients ranging between 0.457 and 0.243) than other indexes (ApoB/ApoA1 or nonHDL cholesterol). AIP correlated with parameters of insulin resistance both in smokers and non-smokers, but after adjustment (for age, body mass index, waist circumference) persisting only in non-smokers. Smokers had a wider waist circumference and a proatherogenic lipid profile. Smoking increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome. AIP can be used in daily praxis for predicting insulin resistance in patients with dyslipidemia, predominantly in non-smokers.

Abstract Background The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) always remains in a potential association with arterial stiffness, however, this association has not been fully discovered and needs to be studied in depth in large hypertensive patient populations. The present analysis thus sought to further explore the association that exists between AIP and arterial stiffness in Chinese patients diagnosed with arterial hypertension. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed 4744 Chinese individuals with essential hypertension. AIP was defined as the base 10 logarithm of the ratio of plasma of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels indicated in molar concentrations. Measurement of arterial stiffness was carried out via brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Results Data were adjusted for potential confounding variables, and multivariate linear regression analysis revealed AIP to be positively correlated with baPWV (β = 1.34, 95% CI: 0.96 to 1.72, P < 0.001). When AIP was instead treated as a categorical variable divided into quartiles, the same relationship was observed (P for trend < 0.001). We additionally found AIP and baPWV had a stronger positive association in individuals with a body mass index (BMI) < 24 kg/m2 (P for interaction < 0.05). Conclusion AIP and arterial stiffness were positively correlated in essential hypertension patients in China, especially in those with a BMI < 24 kg/m2. Abstract The use of contraceptive depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) increasing lately, but some studies suggest has the side effects of weight gain and contraceptives that have side effect in lipid metabolism. Therefore, about 35% of acceptors of DMPA in the first year to stop the use of DMPA. The objective of this study was to determine the differences of lipid profile between acceptors DMPA with acceptors IUD. This was a obcervational study with cross sectional study. The study wasdone at health center Lubuk Buaya in Padang and at laboratory of Biochemistry Departement in Medical Faculty of Andalas University from Januari until September 2016. The subjects were consisted of two groups, each group had 26 subjects. The examination for LDL and HDL used an enzymatic colorimetric method CHOD-PAP.  Data was analyzed using analysis of t-test with p < 0.05 was considered to be significantly different. HDL levels average in Depo Medroxyprogesterone Acetate was 87,54±14,28 mg/dl and IUD was 75,90±8,67 mg/dl with p < 0.05 (significantly difference). Levels of  LDL means there is no significantly difference between DMPA and IUD acceptors (p> 0.05). This research concluded that there isa significant difference on average levels of HDL in the Depo Medroxyprogesterone Acetate and IUD but levels of LDL there is no significantly difference. The clinically lipid profile in the two groups is in normal range.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Studies on postmenopausal women have reported increased risk of breast cancer relating to the type and duration of hormone therapy (HT) used. Women with premature ovarian failure (POF) represent a challenge, since they require prolonged HT. Little is known about the impact of prolonged HT use on these women's breasts. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of one type of HT on the breast density of women with POF, compared with postmenopausal women. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional study at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). METHODS: 31 women with POF and 31 postmenopausal women, all using HT consisting of conjugated equine estrogen combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate, and matched according to HT duration, were studied. Mammography was performed on all subjects and was analyzed by means of digitization or Wolfe's classification, stratified into two categories: non-dense (N1 and P1 patterns) and dense (P2 and Dy). RESULTS: No significant difference in breast density was found between the two groups through digitization or Wolfe's classification. From digitization, the mean breast density was 24.1% ± 14.6 and 18.1% ± 17.2 in the POF and postmenopausal groups, respectively (P = 0.15). Wolfe's classification identified dense breasts in 51.6% and 29.0%, respectively (P = 0.171). CONCLUSION: There was no difference in breast density between the women with POF and postmenopausal women, who had used HT for the same length of time. These results may help towards compliance with HT use among women with POF.

AbstrakDepo Medroksiprogesteron Asetat dan Implant Levonorgestrel merupakan kontrasepsi hormonal progestin sintetik yang memiliki efek samping yaitu peningkatan berat badan dan mempengaruhi metabolisme lipid. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan profil lipid pada akseptor Depo Medroksiprogesteron Asetat dengan Implant Levonorgestrel. Ini adalah studi observasional dengan desain cross sectional comparative. Penelitian dilakukan di laboratorium Bagian Biokimia Fakultas Universitas Andalas dari Maret sampai Mei 2014. Subjek penelitian terdiri dari dua kelompok, masing-masing 20 subjek. Pemeriksaan dengan metode enzimatis kolorimetri yaitu GPO-PAP untuk trigliserida, dan CHOD-PAP untuk kolesterol total, HDL dan LDL. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji t dengan nilai p<0.05 dianggap bermakna secara statistik. Rerata kadar LDL pada Depo Medroksiprogesteron Asetat lebih tinggi (95,51 ± 20,47) mg/dl daripada Implant Levonorgestrel (79,35 ± 12,55) mg/dl dengan nilai p<0,05 artinya terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna sedangkan kadar trigliserida, kolesterol total dan HDL tidak bermakna. Kesimpulan penelitian in adalah terdapat perbedaan yang bermakna rerata kadar LDL pada Depo MedroksiprogesteronAsetat dan Implant Levonorgestrel, sedangkan kadar trigliserida, kolesterol total dan HDL tidak bermakna.
