This study assessed the fluctuating water level of Lake Chad and its consequences on the livelihood of people that depend on it. In terms of depth, Lake Chad is very shallow which makes it vulnerable to climate change and human activities. The study opined that continuous reduction in the volume of water of the lake will lead to negative effects such as forceful migration, resource-induced conflict, loss of biodiversity etc. Insurgency spear-headed by Nigeria based terrorist organization, “Boko Haram”, has killed many people including farmers and fishermen in the riparian countries of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroun and this has led to a decline in agricultural activities around the Lake Chad area making many to depend on food aid for their survival. The insurrectional activity of the terrorist group around the Lake Chad area also makes trade between communities extremely difficult as they are known to have attacked and killed people inside market. It is recommended that measures such as livelihood diversification through technology, creation of protected area, improved agricultural practices etc. should be adopted to reduce pressure on the lake and its resources. Abstract A predator-prey model interaction under fluctuating water level with non-selective harvesting is proposed and studied in this paper. Sufficient conditions for the permanence of two populations and the extinction of predator population are provided. The non-negative equilibrium points are given, and their stability is studied by using the Jacobian matrix. By constructing a suitable Lyapunov function, sufficient conditions that ensure the global stability of the positive equilibrium are obtained. The bionomic equilibrium and the optimal harvesting policy are also presented. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the feasibility of the main results.

In the last decades, political policies and collective consciousness focused on the importance of sustainable food and environmentally friendly approaches in agriculture. Distribution of beneficial organisms is a very important factor in integrated pest management, and mechanical release could improve application uniformity as well as reduce costs and working time. Several mechanisation experiences have been carried out through the years, however none of them has still found a massive application in common agricultural practices. This review paper analyses all the efforts made in this direction, by evaluating main strengths and weakness points of manually brought, tractor mounted, or aerial mechanical devices. In this way development opportunities can be identified, in a field that could achieve a substantial role in food production and agricultural activities while respecting the environment and human health.

The use of terror as a ratio for resolving internal fundamental differences is not uncommon in neo-colonial societies. This is not saying that flashes of same are not recogn ised in the developed environment. The prevalence of this alternative appears as old as the political history of Nigeria. This work underscores the theoretical and historical basis of rebellion in Nigeria primarily focusing on the rise, fundamental philosophy and the vision of the Boko Haramists. The central thesis of this work is that Boko Haram activities have negative effects on Nigeria’s external image and fundamentally, it exposes the nature and dynamics of Nigeria’s security problems. The work contributes in part to the literature on this issue but significantly, it situates the problems within strategic logic which amplifies the degeneration of the problems and the incessant rebellion against the Nigerian State.

Water scarcity has become one of the main global problems, since of all the water of the terrestrial surface, only 2.5% represents fresh water, and of this, only 0.3% corresponds to the water of the rivers and lakes that are available to supply the demand for food production and other uses. The present work consisted in surveying the scenario related to the global water crisis and presenting evidence that even Brazil being abundant in the amount of water available, tends to face serious problems because of its scarcity, affecting two of the main economic pillars, agribusiness and industry. It was observed that the main negative effects on water resources occur due to urban occupation and agricultural practices in a disorderly way, causing destruction of natural resources through the discharge of domestic sewage, industrial effluents and agrochemicals. In general, the lack of control of the use of the water directed to the productive processes is one of the major generators of the water shortage, since 69% of the water derived from rivers, lakes and aquifers underground is turned to irrigated agriculture, using 70 times more water than for domestic purposes. Thus, it is necessary to adopt policies aimed at the conservation and efficient use of water resources, to value water as a social, social and environmental good, since their scarcity can generate instability in economic sectors such as agriculture, generating production insecurity in industry, as well as affecting the supply of drinking water, basic sanitation and public health.

In a context marked by fear and instability of the populations, this article describes the influence of the armed movements as well as forced displacements caused by the exactions of the Boko Haram sect on the teaching and learning in schools of refugee children in countries bordering Lake Chad. The study conducted in the Minawao External Refugee Camp and the Zamani IDP site in the Far North Region of Cameroon reveals that crisis situations have a significant impact on the teaching/learning of refugee children. This influence can be seen through the learning conditions and difficult school pathways of refugee students in the Minawao and Zamai camps. In addition, the attitudes and practices of teachers, the quality of supervision and effective monitoring of students by their parents appear as other real niches that should not be lost sight of. Thus, it would be important for all refugee students arriving in camps to benefit from continuity of appropriate school services in order to match the teaching and learning of refugee children with the education systems of Lake Chad countries.

This study examined the effects of submergence and nitrogen concentration on biomass allocation and nutrients utilization of an invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides. In the experiment, A. philoxeroides was applied to two water level treatments (0 and 25cm above the surface) across with two nitrogen concentrations (0 and 10 mg/l N). The results showed that submergence decreased leaf fraction and increased stem fraction, but high N changed this situation. In submergence, high N increased leaf fraction but decreased stem fraction due to leaves survival and maintenance. Submergence decreased root fraction and the content of soluble sugar in stem. The results suggested that high N concentration could counteract the negative effects of submergence. Therefore, the risk of A. philoxeroides invasion might be enhanced by nitrogen pollution in fluctuating water bodies, and should be attention intensely.
