Three compounds namely, tinosporol A, 8-methoxy palmatine and callecdysterol C were isolated from the methanol extract of the stem of Tinospora crispa. Biological activities of different partitionates of the parent extract was also evaluated. Antimicrobial screening of different partitionates was carried out against sixteen different microorganisms and only n-hexane fraction exhibited significant zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus (9 mm), Shigella boydii (9 mm), Shigella dysenteriae (9 mm), Candida albicans (10 mm) and Aspergillus niger (10 mm).The crude methanol extract showed the highest general toxicity with LC50 values of 57.14 μg/mL against brine shrimp lethality bioassay.The total antioxidant capacity of aqueous fraction was found to be 61.61 mg as ascorbic acid equivalentper gram of plant extract.The antioxidant activity of DCM fraction revealed the highest activity having IC50 values 54.74 μg/mL. Leucas aspera plant was subjected to isolation of secondary metabolites and screening of their biological activities. Four compounds, stigmasterol, lupeol, β-sitosterol and menthol, were isolated from methanol extract. Sixteen different micro-organisms were used for investigating antimicrobial activity of the different extracts of L. aspera where noteworthy zone of inhibition was observed against Gram positive B. subtilis and S. aureus, B. megaterium and Gram negative S. paratyphi, S. typhi, V. mimicus, S. dysenteriae and V. cholera. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the highest lethality was showed by crude methanol extract having LC50 values of 4.07μg/mL. The total antioxidant capacity of crude methanol fraction was found to be 59.40 mg/g of plant extract which was maximum comparing with other fractions. No significant cytotoxicity was observed on both HeLa and Vero cell at 1mg/mL sample inhibition. Dhaka Univ. J. Sci. 68(1): 101-104, 2020 (January)

Aphanamixis polystachy seed extracts were examined for their in-vitro biological activities. The n-hexane and methanol extract showed significant phenolic content of 12.0 and 11.7 mg GAE/g, respectively. Antioxidant activity was exhibited by the methanol extract (IC50: 22.34 μg/mL) and moderate activity was shown by the n-hexane extract (IC50: 63.05 μg/ml) compared to BHT (tert-butyl-1- hydroxy toluene, IC50: 14.01 μg/ml) though both extracts caused moderate clot lysis of 18.84% and 23.49% compared to the positive control Streptokinase (65.16%). The n-hexane and methanol extract had shown 18.2% and 32.2% inhibition of hypnotic solution induced haemolysis respectively, while the n-hexane extract had almost no activity (2.21%) and methanol extract showed very high (70.17%) inhibition of heat induced haemolysis compared to acetyl salicylic acid (71.9%). Sensible and substantial cytotoxicity was exhibited by the n-hexane (LC50:13.45 μg/ml) and methanol extracts (LC50:1.61 μg/ml), respectively compared to vincristine sulfate (LC50: 0.45 μg/ml). The n-hexane extract showed no antimicrobial activity against the tested micro-organisms but the methanol extract showed a strong zone of inhibition (25 mm) against Staphylococcus aureus and a moderate zone of inhibition (10mm) against Shigella boydii. Ethanolic extract and its n-hexane and chloroform soluble fractions of the leaves of Gardenia coronaria Buch. Ham. were screened for their bio-activities. Preliminary phytochemicals screening of crude extract revealed the presence of glycosides, alkaloids, tannins, saponins, reducing sugars and flavonoids in different extracts. In antibacterial test, maximal zone of inhibition obtained against B. cereus (15.3 mm) and in antifungal test maximal zone found against C. albicans (12.7 mm) by the chloroform extract. The crude extract of the plant exhibited notable anti-inflammatory activity. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH free radical scavenging method where the scavenging activity was concentration dependent with IC50 values of 5.15μg/ml, 8.75μg/ml and 12.71μg/ml for ethanol, nhexane and chloroform extract, respectively. In the castor oil-induced antidiarrheal assay, the crude extract of the plant significantly increased the latency and total count of defecation. Acetic acid-induced writhing reflex due to analgesia was inhibited by 31.18% (by ethanol), 23.67% (by n-hexane) and 24.73% (by chloroform) at 500 mg/kg body wt. in experimental mice. The present study was focused on the preliminary phytochemical, antibacterial activity, FTIR and GC-MS analysis of aerial parts of C. juncea. Phytochemical analysis of three extracts showed that the presence of alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids. The methanol extract of aerial parts were found to be exhibit highest zone of inhibition against S. aureus (19.3mm), P. florescence (17.6mm) and K. pneumonia (17.0mm). FTIR analysis of the methanol extract given the major peak observed was at wavenumber 3354.08cm-1 that indicates the presence of O-H Alcohol functional group. 29 components were identified through the GCMS analysis of methanol extract. From results to confirm the fact that C. juncea possesses potential of bioactive compounds which are responsible for the biological activities that is useful for natural health.

Four plants species, namely; Calotropis gigantea, Ageratum houstonianum, Catharanthus roseus, Thevetia peruviana (seed), and Thevetia peruviana (leaves) have been collected from Chitwan, and the crude methanol extract of respective plants parts and seeds were studied for their phytoconstituents and biological activity. Phytochemical screening showed the presence of glycosides, flavonol glycosides and coumarin glycosides as rich components. The Brine-shrimp bioassay of various plants extract showed that C. gigantean, A. houstonianum and C. roseus exhibited high toxicity against brine shrimp nauplii at LC50 (μg/ml) values of 23.44, 27.54 and 83.17 respectively. In addition to this, study of antimicrobial activity of respective plants extract on methanol showed that, all the four plants species were highly active for Staphylococcus aures and C. gigantea is pharmacologically active for other bacteria such E. coli, S. aures, K. oxytoca and P. aeruginosa. Study of anti-cancer activity on human pancreatic cancer cells such as PANC-1 revealed that the preferential cytotoxic activity of crude methanol extract of C. gigantea was highest at 100μg/ml for both NDM and DMEM.

Traditionally, Calophyllum genus was used for swollen gums, arthritis, diarrhea, chronic abscess, skin infections, and lesions treatment. C. ferrugineum from Sarawak has least studied about their phytochemical constituents and biological activities. The objectives are to isolate and characterize the chemical components from C. ferrugineum and to determine their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity. The plant stem barks were collected from National Park in Sarawak and underwent extraction process. The extracts underwent isolation and purification processes by using several chromatographic methods. Structural elucidation was achieved by using infrared, MS and NMR spectra. The isolation process from the species has afforded 5 known compounds;  isocalanone (1) and 1-hydroxy-7-methoxy-9H-xanthen-9-one (2), lupeol (3), friedelin (4) and diethylene glycol dibenzoate (5). The chloroform and methanol extract showed strong inhibitions against S. aureus, B. subtilis, P. aeruginosa and E. coli with the MIC and MBC values ranging from 225 and 112.5 µg/mL. Isocalanone (1) and the methanol extract of C. ferrugineum showed potent antioxidant activity with the IC50 values of 28 ± 5.23 and 35 ± 3.69 µg/mL compared to ascorbic acid, respectively. The results obtained from this study emphasized the potential of the species as antimicrobial and antioxidant agents.

Different parts of Bellis perennis were subjected to hydrodistillation and the products were subsequently analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Aqueous and methanol extracts were prepared from the aerial parts. Antioxidant [1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging, reducing activity, total antioxidant] and antimicrobial activity of the plant materials were studied. The aqueous extracts showed higher DPPH scavenging activity (85.8% at 102.5 μg/mL) than the methanol extract. Reducing power was also observed for both tested extracts, where the formation of linoleic acid peroxides was more for the aqueous extract than the methanol extract. Antimicrobial activities of all plant materials were evaluated at varying concentrations against a panel of pathogens, but without pronounced inhibitory effect.

In this research the potential of Pakoba leaf extract to be used as antioxidant and skin whitening (anti-melanogenic agent) is investigated. The antioxidant activity of Pakoba leaves were studied using DPPH method and the result showed that the 80 percent methanol crude extract has strong antioxidant activity with an IC50 value of 22.66 ± 1.02 μg/ml. The aqueous fraction of the sample has an IC50 value of 53.30 ± 1.42 μg/ml, followed by n-butanol fraction (53.63 ± 1.45 μg/ml) and chloroform fraction (511.54 ± 1.59 μg/ml). The anti-melanogenic activity of the crude methanol extract showed IC50 value of 316.56 ± 11.04 μg/ml. Thus, it isconcluded that crude extract of Pakoba leaves shows good potential as the antioxidant source although it does not show good anti- melanogenic activity.

Abstract Background Viburnums comprise a taxonomic group of plants distributed all over the world and were reported to have many biological activities. Viburnum coriaceum Blume is one of the least explored members of the group. The present study was aimed to explore the phytochemical profile of the plant, Viburnum coriaceum Blume with special emphasis to its anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities. Results Extracts of all parts of plants were found to possess a spectrum of chemicals in considerable amount, including triterpenoids and glycosides. Anti-oxidant property was found in extracts made of any part of the plant. Methanol extract of root expressed a prominent zone of inhibition in agar gel well-diffusion assay involving many microorganisms. Inhibition of enzymes, LOX, and trypsin showed by the hexane extract of root suggested a prominent anti-inflammatory potential of the plant under investigation. Conclusion Phytochemical profiling and the other assays using the plant extracts provide us with a plant having many valuable medicinal properties. Viburnum coriaceum Blume could be noted as a promising material for drug leads.

In this study, three compounds, stigmasterol (1), lupeol (2), 16-hydroxylupeol (3) were isolated from the petroleum ether soluble fraction of a methanol extract of whole plant of Justica gendarussa (Burm. f). The crude methanol extract as well as its petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride and chloroform soluble Kupchan fractions were studied for antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. Among the different fractions tested for antioxidant activity, the chloroform soluble partitionate was the most potent with IC50 value of 18.80 μg/ml as compared to tertbutyl- 1-hydroxytoluene (IC50=17.69 μg/ml). Antimicrobial screening of the different extractives was conducted by the disc diffusion method and all the fractions except chloroform soluble partitionate exhibited mild antimicrobial activity with zone of inhibition ranging from 7-10 mm. In brine shrimp lethality bioassay, the petroleum ether soluble materials demonstrated the highest toxicity with LC50 of 1.27μg /ml. This is the first report of isolation of compounds from J. gendarussa, and its antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties.
