Silicosis is not an uncommon disease in Bangladesh as a good number of people are exposed to silica dust in their working places. Again pulmonary tuberculosis is also common here, the risk of which is increased by about 30 folds in silicosis. In the reported case, a young stone cutter of 40 years was admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital with progressive dyspnoea, dry cough and radiological appearance of multiple small and a large nodular pulmonary mass. Two of his brothers, also stonecutter, died of similar disease. In this context the patient was diagnosed as a case of chronic complicated silicosis and treated symptomatically as there is no curative treatment. A good number of people are engaged in stone cutting in our country including Faridpur district and are vulnerable to this progressive and non-curable disease. To aim of this case report is to make those people to be aware about the condition, so that they can protect themselves by taking appropriate measures (i.e. using protective mask) and should monitored their condition by regular chest x-ray. If early signs of silicosis is detected the worker should changed their job. DOI: 10.3329/fmcj.v5i2.6827Faridpur Med. Coll. J. 2010;5(2):69-71

Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease, which is most commonly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It is endemic in many parts of the world. However, Hydatid disease can occur in almost any part of the body. Isolated omenal hydatid cyst is one of the least common sites. A case of very unusual omental hydatid cyst is presented here which was diagnosed in the Department of Radiology & Imaging, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Dhaka, and subsequently confirmed by histopathology. A 25 years old male attended the skin & VD outpatient department of Khulna Medical College Hospital on 16th June, 2013 with complaints of multiple asymptomatic small rounded firm, cystic nodules that are adherent to the overlying skin of scortum. The microscopic examination of the cystic nodules showed the features of steatocystoma multiplex. This disorder, although it is asymptomatic, is a cosmetic threat to the patient. Only a few cases of the patients with an autosomal dominant mutation, who had keratin 17; have been reported. We are reporting here a case of steatocystoma multiplex of scortum in a 25 years old male along with review of literature.J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2015; 33(4): 218-221

To identify the causes of haemoptysis and to diagnose the diseases clinically and cost effective laboratory investigations in our situation. Fifty consecutive cases of haemoptysis admitted at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, Rajshahi during 2000-2001 were prospectively studied .Pulmonary tuberculosis was the commonest found in 19 (38%) cases. Tuberculer bacilli could be isolated in 5 (26.31%) of the cases. Eight (16%) patients were mitral valvular diseases . Bronchial carcinoma was 4(8%) of the series. Three patients (6%) were lung abscess. Six patients (12%) had bronchiectasis. Five patients (10%) had pneumonia. Remaining five (10%) patients were miscellaneous aetiology. In the present series it has been found that pulmonary tuberculosis and mitral valvular disease comprise 54% of the cases. Chest X-ray and sputum examination were found to be the two most useful investigations necessary for aetiological diagnosis of haemoptysis. Within limited resources the aetiological diagnosis of haemoptysis can easily be done in the majority of cases by doing chest X-ray and sputum examination in our country. Lobectomy of liver is indicated for different conditions; mainly malignancy and trauma. Though it is highly specialized operation and preferably be performed in specialized tertiary center, sometime a general surgeon may not be in a position to avoid the surgery due to very low socioeconomic condition or to tackle emergency traumatic condition. Two case report of Lobectomy of liver; right lobectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma, and left lobectomy for left lobe big cyst and multiple stones in it were performed at Chittagong Medical College Hospital utilizing the existing facilities. Both patients recovered uneventfully. Case I expired after two month and fourteen day, Case II leading a pain free cheerful normal life. Experience of management of these two cases of resection of liver is recorded at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. DOI: 10.3329/jbcps.v26i3.4201 J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2008; 26: 153-157

We present a female patient with pregnancy associated with normal live birth and the unusual concomitance of chorangioma. It was an incidental finding during the routine microscopic examination of the placenta of the 30 year multipara whose pregnancy was clinically normal. She was admitted to the Bangladesh Medical College Hospital for labor at 34 weeks gestation. She was investigated thoroughly because of irregular pervaginal bleeding before delivary. Caesarian section was done at 37th weeks of pregnancy. The placenta was found enlarged, irregular and haemorrhagic. Histopathological examination from the sections of specimen was done and diagnosed as Chorangioma. The case is presented as below.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jom.v14i2.19671 J Medicine 2013, 14(2): 185-186

Background: The aetiopathogenesis of oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF), though not an uncommon disease, is not yet well established. OSMF is prevalent in the geographical area of study. These were the driving factors to conduct this study. This haematological study in patients with oral submucous fibrosis was conducted to find out some definite causative features so that an effective treatment regime could be evolved.

Methods: This prospective hospital-based observational study was conducted in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) and Pathology in a tertiary care medical college hospital. The 150 clinically diagnosed patients were enrolled for the study. Routine laboratory tests were done to identify markers which would suggest autoimmune conditions.

Results: In 124 cases (83%), mild to moderately anaemia was observed while 75 cases (50%) showed raised ESR. Lymphocytosis and eosinophilia were observed in 42 cases (28%) and 48 cases (32%) respectively. Hyperglobulinaemia was observed in 45 cases (30%). In 18 cases (12%) leukocytosis was observed. In 30 cases (20%), pus cells were seen in urine, while ova and cysts were found present in 42 cases (28%).

Conclusions: The present study could not establish the commonly claimed theory of collagen disease. The exact aetiology of OSMF is not yet known. Some genetic factors seem to play a role, which make some people predisposed to react abnormally to chronic masticatories of different forms of areca nut, tobacco and areca leaves. Therefore further research in the direction of genetic studies will perhaps reveal the exact cause of OSMF.

Background: This observational study done on the indoor patients of department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Chittagong Medical College Hospital, admitted during the year 2011. The objective of this study was to see the most prevalent diseases admitted in our department. Methods: Participants (225) were all the patients admitted during the period of 2011. Patients admitted more than once were recorded once only. Patient’s data were taken from hospital records. Results: Spondyloarthropathies (SpA) comprised 18.66% of the patients. Total patient of SpA was 42. Among them AS was 47.62%. Prolapsed lumbar disk (PLID) patients constituted 12.44% (28) of hospital admission. Twenty one (9.33%) patients suffered from other causes lumbago-sciatica. Admitted RA patient number were 12 (5.33%) during this year. Total twelve patients with bone TB (5.33%) were admitted during 2011. Nine TB patients (75% of bone TB) had TB in the hip. Total Stroke patients admitted in that year were 9 (4%). Among them 8 (88.89%) were ischemic. Conclusion: SpA, PLID and other lumbago-sciatica patients comprised the major bulk of the patients in inpatient department of PM&R. Musculoskeletal diseases were the commonest cause of hospital admission for rehabilitation. Neurological causes were next common. Inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases also formed a good number of patients.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/cmoshmcj.v13i1.19416

Genito-urinary tuberculosis is an infrequent but not uncommon condition in countries with high incidence of tuberculosis like Bangladesh. A female patient of 25 years was admitted into Faridpur Medical college Hospital with acute retention of urine with history of haematuria, dysuria, fever and difficulty in urination for about three years. USG revealed few masses in the urinary bladder, later proved by histopathological examination as granulomatous lesion consistent with tuberculosis. Anti-TB treatment was given and the masses were removed surgically. With this treatment recovery of the patient is satisfactory and symptoms are disappearing. The aim of this study to make internist more efficient to diagnose the disease by strong clinical suspicion and relevant laboratory investigation, otherwise such uncommon disease and its complications may endanger life of such patient. Sclerosing haemangioma is a rare neoplasm of the lung which behaves in a clinically benign fashion. Herein, a case of sclerosing haemangioma of the lung in a 52 years old woman is reported. She presented with symptoms of cough and chest pain. Chest X-ray and CT scan showed a well-defined lesion in lower lobe of left lung. Bronchoscopic biopsy findings were suggestive of a carcinoid tumor. Later the tumor was removed by lobectomy. The distinctive constellation of histologic findings revealed it to be a sclerosing haemangioma.
