This paper proposes an improved harmonic distorted modified triangular carrier-based multicarrier pulse width modulation for generating the switching pulses of a multilevel inverter. This modified triangular wave consists of a triangular wave bearing a close resemblance to an ‘M’ shaped wave. The design of this carrier signal has been optimized to maintain a low level of total harmonic distortion (THD), while increasing the fundamental o/p voltage to ensure the effective DC voltage utilization. Moreover, this optimization reduces the switching losses and improve the efficiency of the power inverter. With the help of this carrier signal, High-frequency alternative phase opposition disposition pulse width modulation (APODPWM) is generated. This new control scheme has been applied to seven levels of conventional cascaded H-bridge with reduced switch multilevel inverter. The output is compared with conventional carrier-based APODPWM. The comparison is made in terms of THD, fundamental output voltages and inverter losses. To ensure quality performance, conventional carrier and modified carrier-based multicarrier PWM topologies are used for the Cascaded seven-level inverter with reduced switch seven-level inverter having a carrier frequency of 2 kHz and modulation index of 0.8-1.30. According to the simulation results, by using the proposed modulation scheme the THD and the switching loss were reduced by 9.64[%] and 4.2[%] respectively. Besides, the proposed modulation technique increases the fundamental output voltages. The total simulation process is done in MATLAB Simulink environment. This paper deals with a reduced switch multi-level inverter for the solar photovoltaic system-based 127-level multi-level inverter. The proposed technique uses the minimum number of switches to achieve the maximum steps in staircase AC output voltage when compared to the flying capacitor multi-level inverter, cascaded type multilevel inverter and diode clamped multi-level inverter. The use of a minimum number of switches decreases the cost of the system. To eliminate the switching losses, in this topology a square wave switch is used instead of pulse width modulation. Thereby the total harmonic distortion (THD) and harmonics have been reduced in the pulsating AC output voltage waveform. The performance of 127-level MLI is compared with 15 level, 31-level and 63-level multilevel inverters. The outcomes of the solar photovoltaic system-based 127-level multi-level inverter have been simulated in a MATLAB R2009b environment.

The popularity of multilevel inverters have increasing over the years in various applications without use of a transformer and has many benefits. This work presents the performance and comparative analysis of single phase diode clamped multilevel inverter and a hybrid inverter with reduced number of components. As there are some drawbacks of diode clamped multilevel inverter such as requiring higher number of components, PWM control method is complex and capacitor voltage balancing problem, an implementation of hybrid inverter that requires fewer components and less carrier signals when compared to conventional multilevel inverters is discussed. The performance of single phase diode clamped multilevel inverter and hybrid multilevel inverter for seven, nine and eleven levels is performed using phase disposition, alternate phase opposition disposition sinusoidal pulse width modulation techniques. Both the multilevel inverter are implemented for the above mentioned multicarrier based Pulse Width Modulation methods for R and R-L loads. The total harmonic distortion is evaluated at various modulation indices. The analysis of the multilevel inverters is done by simulation in matlab / simulink environment.

This paper introduces a new premium multilevel inverter (MLI) topology with cascaded H-Bridge and series-parallel connected switches to synthesize the fundamental sine wave with various levels of voltage. The component count is decreased by reducing the number of power switching devices, optoisolators, voltage gate drivers, snubber and filter circuits. The combination of two power switches and a separated DC (SDC) source is called an SDC module. Five SDC modules are required for a 63-level MLI and six SDC modules are required for a 127-level MLI. In this paper, both a 63-level and a 127-level filter-less single-phase MLIs are deliberated. The switches are controlled by employing a newer pulse width modulation (PWM) technique called periodic reduced digital carrier level shift PWM (PRDCLSPWM). As the number of levels increases to a greater extent, the total harmonic distortion diminishes without the need of filter circuit and the performance level also increases. Comparative analysis of proposed 63-level and 127-level MLIs topology with the conventional and modern topologies has been presented in terms of power switches, gate driver circuit requirement, DC voltage sources and THD limits. PRDCLSPWM scheme is derived and analyzed for the proposed 63-level and 127-level MLIs to eliminate low-order and high-order harmonics. Moreover, the performance of the proposed modulation scheme is compared with the most commonly used schemes. The modeling and simulation are done with MATLAB/SIMULINK 2016a.

The three unit nine-level inverter can output more voltage levels with fewer h-bridge units, while having better output waveform quality. However, in the conventional hybrid frequency modulation strategy, only one low-voltage unit adopts pulse width modulation (PWM), which causes the problem of switching loss and uneven heat distribution between the two low-voltage units. At the same time, the output power of the conventional modulation strategy is unbalanced. Aiming to resolve the above problems, a modified hybrid modulation strategy and a power balance control method under the strategy is proposed in this paper. The modulation strategy achieves output power balance between the three units and an even distribution of switching losses between the two low voltage units while maintaining the same output power quality. Simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the modulation strategy.

This paper deals with the design of cascaded 11 level H- bridge inverter. It includes a comparison between the 11 level H-bridge and T-bridge multilevel inverter. The cascaded inverter of higher level is a very effective and practical solution for reduction of total harmonic distortion (THD).These cascaded multilevel inverter can be used for higher voltage applications with more stability. As the level is increased the output waveform becomes more sinusoidal in nature. The inverter is designed using multicarrier sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique for generating triggering pulses for the semiconductor switches used in the device. Through this paper it will be proved that a cascaded multilevel H-bridge topology has higher efficiency than a T-bridge inverter, as whichever source input voltage is provided since input is equal to the output voltage. In T-bridge inverter, the output obtained is half of the applied input, so efficiency is just half as compared to H-bridge. The output waveform is distorted and has higher THD. The simulation is performed using MATLAB /Simulink 2013 software.

Pulse width modulation (PWM) is a powerful technique employed in analog circuit convert with a microprocessor based digital output. Besides, Pseudo Random Multi Carrier (PRMC) involves in two random PWM strategies to minimize the harmonic order for 9- level cascaded multilevel H-bridge (CHB) inverter and 9-level Modular Multilevel inverter are introduced. The design mainly focuses on the (Pulse Width Modulation) PWM method, in which two nearest voltage levels are approached in estimated output voltage prediction based on the Partial swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and it conveys a random variation in the pulse position of output by Pseudo Random Multi Carrier- Pulse Width Modulation (PRMC-PWM). The CHB and the Modular inverters generate low distortion output by using PMRC. The simulation and prototype circuit are developed for the nine level output using sixteen switches and ten with Resistive-Inductive (R-L) load variation condition. The power quality is improved in CHB and Modular inverter (MoI) with minimized harmonics in various modulation index (MI) as varied from 0.1 up to 0.8. The circuit is designed by using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), Implementing a PSO algorithm for both CHB, and MoI are proposed. The comparisons of results are verified with lower order harmonics and find the best switching angle across the MLI switches. Modular inverter furthermore investigates with PRMC, Random Nearest level (RNL) modulation scheme are presented, and the proposed circuit is along with the respective degree of the output voltage were synthesized in non-linear load by the development of reactive power across a motor load.

This paper presents comparative study of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and its individual harmonic contents without grid and with grid for Diode clamped multi level inverter (DCMLI) and Flying capacitor clamped multilevel inverter (FCMLI) based Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) employing PI and Fuzzy logic controller (FLC). Simple method to control for a variable speed wind energy conversion system with a DFIG is connected to the grid through a diode rectifier and a diode clamped multilevel inverter (DCMLI). The DC-link voltage is controlled through a DC-DC boost converter to keep the DC voltage at constant value. Inverter is controlled by sinusoidal pulse width modulation technique, which supplies power to the grid. The THD and its harmonic content are studied for different wind speeds. DFIG fed flying capacitor multi level inverter (FCMLI) based WECS connected to load as well as grid. FCMLI is controlled through sinusoidal pulse width modulation. Voltage and current harmonics are studied. The results of both multilevel inverters are compared. It shows that the level of harmonic content of two types of multilevel inverters working at different wind speeds indicates that Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) for DCMLI has given best results.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the operation and design of symmetrical and asymmetrical multilevel inverter structures with reduced number of switching devices. In this study, the term of conventional inverter is defined as a single cascaded inverter. Specifically, the inverter operates in three complete loops and only produces 2-level and 3-level of output voltages. Usually, cascaded structure suffers from the high total harmonic distortion. Thus, by considering multilevel structure of inverter, low total harmonic distortion reduction and voltage stress reduction on switching devices can be archived. Sinusoidal pulse width modulation and modified square pulse width modulation are used as modulation techniques in switching schemes of the designed multilevel inverters. The findings indicate that, the designed multilevel structure cause low total harmonics distortion at the output voltage. Furthermore, the asymmetrical structure is producing the same output voltage levels with reduced number of switching devices compared to the symmetrical structure is experimentally confirmed. The findings show that the total harmonic distortion for 7-level (symmetrical) and 9-level (asymmetrical) are 16.45% and 15.22%, respectively.
