The freshwater garfish, Xenentodon cancila is one of the important food fish in Bangladesh. The size class distribution, length-weight relationships, and sex ratio of X. cancila are described in the present study. A total of 138 specimens were collected randomly for a year from the local fish markets and/or direct from fishermen who fish primarily in nearby waters (Beel, Canal and Baor) of Jashore, southwestern Bangladesh. Most individuals were collected in the rainy season and their mean size was larger compare to the other two seasons (summer and winter). The maximum size recorded 254.1 mm total length (TL) and 38.05 g body weight (BW). The mean TL and BW were 166.35±38.17 mm and 11.16±7.47g, respectively. Most of the individuals belonged to the size class of 141-180 mm. The length-weight relationship (LWR) was strongly correlated as the regression value was 0.876 and the relationships were linear in both sexes. The allometric coefficient ‘b’ of the LWR indicated nearly positive allometric growth and the value was 2.98. The male fishes were dominant over females and the ratio was 1: 0.77. These research outcomes would be useful for the researcher to better understand the biological aspects of freshwater garfish in the nearby waters of Jashore area in south-western Bangladesh. The jinga shrimp (Metapenaeus affinis H. Milne Edwards, 1837) was one of important commodity that was exploited in Kotabaru Waters, yet the production tend to be declined recently. The data and information on biological aspects and population parameters are needed to investigate the exploitation level and the basis of management measures. This research aims to investigate the biological aspects and population parameters of jinga shrimp Kotabaru waters, South of Kalimantan. This research was conducted on January – November 2016. The growth parameters were estimated as movement of length frequency mode by ELEFAN I method. The results showed that the mean size of female jinga shrimp (M. affinis) was 23,6 ± 3,45 mm CL and the mode was 24 mmCL. While, the mean size of male jinga shrimp was 20,7 ± 2.9 mm CL and the mode was 18 mmCL. The sex ratio of male and female shrimp was 1 : 2,5 . Spawning season of jinga shrimp was estimated throughout the year and the peak was in March. The length at first captured (Lc) was shorter than length at first matured (Lm) (21,7 < 28,5 mm CL). That means most of the catches was immature. The growth function of male and female jinga shrimp were and, CL(t)=35,95(1-e-2.02(t+0,31) respectively and CL(t)= 38,3(1-e-1,92(t+0,29)). The exploitation rate (E) of male and female shrimp fishing were  0,70/year 0,73/year, respectively. The reduction of fishing effort needed by 40% of the actual combined with the temporal fishing closure March.

Oreochromis leucostictus is one of the commercially important tilapiine in Lake Naivasha. Its stock in the lake has declined due to the effect of fishing and pollution. This study investigated on its length-weight relationship, condition factor, sex ratio and maturity. Fish samples (233) were caught using gillnets of mesh-sizes 2-5 inches. Each individual fish was measured (cm) and weighed (g) in the field. The specimens were preserved in ice and transported to the laboratory for analysis of maturity. The mean (±SE) total length and weight for all fish was 21.3±0.3 cm TL and 187.4±8.3 g, respectively. Males 22.3±0.4 cm were significantly larger than females 19.2±0.5 cm. The mean condition factor was 1.06, 0.99 and 1.04 for male, female and combined sexes, respectively. The overall population sex ratio was 2.19:1.0 (male: female) that deviated significantly from 1:1. The slope b of the length-weight relationship was 1.92, 3.07, 2.33 for males, females, and combined sexes, respectively. Length at 50% maturity was estimated at 21.0 cm for females and 26.0 cm for males. Ripe oocytes and testis were found in all fish sizes. Comparisons with earlier studies suggest that the parameters of its growth, condition and maturity vary greatly from the different habitats.

The exploitation of banana prawn (Penaeus merguiensis De Man, 1888) in Kotabaru Waters need management strategy, so the prawn fisheries in Kotabaru waters could be sustainably exploited. The important information needed for its basis management are was biological aspects of banana prawn. The aim of this research were to study about length frequency, length-weight relationship, maturity stages and length at first first mature of banana prawn in Kotabaru Waters. The research was conducted at landing site of prawn in Kotabaru and the samples were collected in January – November 2016. The method used for sampling was random sampling. The results showed that the size of banana prawn tend to become smaller with the size between 14-46 mmCL and the mean size were 26 ± 3,7 mmCL for male and 28,5 ± 5,3 mmCL for female. The growth pattern of banana prawn was allometric negative and the weights decreased from the previous years. The highest proportion of mature prawns was in March, likely suggestes to be the spawning season of banana prawn. Length at first captured of banana prawns (Lc = 28,1 mmCL) was lower than length at first matured (Lm = 35,3 mmCL) so most of prawns captured has not spawn yet. For sustainability of banana prawn resources in Kotabaru Waters, it is suggested to close fishing season in March and minimum legal size should be bigger than 35 mmCL or less than 27 prawns in 1 kg.

Biological aspects of sailfin dory, Zenopsis conchifer, were studied from 839 individuals obtained from deep-sea commercial bottom trawling off southern Brazil at depths up to 526 m in 2002 and 2003. Samples included fish from 101 mm Lt and 15 g up to 640 mm Lt and 2,9 g. The sex-ratio was 50% at 150 mm Lt and between 300-350 mm Lt, with females outnumbering males in the remaining size classes. Reproductive activity seems to peak between July and August (austral winter). Size at attainment of 50% maturity (Lt50) was 311 mm Lt in females. The mean length and maturity of the specimens increased with depth, suggesting that larger fish concentrate in deeper waters.

The extent to which the Minnesota Child Development Inventory (MCDI), could be used to estimate levels of language development in 2-year-old children was examined. Fifty-seven children between 23 and 28 months were given the Sequenced Inventory of Communication Development (SICD), and at the same time a parent completed the MCDI. In addition the mean length of utterance (MLU) was obtained for each child from a spontaneous speech sample. The MCDI Expressive Language scale was found to be a strong predictor of both the SICD Expressive scale and MLU. The MCDI Comprehension-Conceptual scale, presumably a receptive language measure, was moderately correlated with the SICD Receptive scale; however, it was also strongly correlated with the expressive measures. These results demonstrated that the Expressive Language scale of the MCDI was a valid predictor of expressive language for 2-year-old children. The MCDI Comprehension-Conceptual scale appeared to assess both receptive and expressive language, thus complicating its interpretation.

Lead iodide was precipitated by a procedure in which an aqueous solution of potassium iodide at a concentration of 0.03, 0.10 or 0.20 mol l-1 was stirred while an aqueous solution of lead nitrate at one-half concentration was added at a constant rate. The mean size of the PbI2 crystals was determined by evaluating the particle size distribution, which was measured sedimentometrically. The dependence of the mean crystal size on the duration of the experiment exhibited a minimum for any of the concentrations applied. The reason for this is discussed.

Abstract Objectives The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ficus carica latex on the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), induced by Leishmania major. A 5% topical gel with F. carica latex was prepared. BALB/c mice were infected by inoculation of amastigotes form of L. major. Thirty BALB/c mice were divided into five groups, where the first group was treated daily, the second group twice per day, and the third group every other day with the 5% topical gel, for 3 weeks. The sizes of the lesions were measured before and during the course of treatment. Results Although the mean size of lesions in the mice group treated with the 5% F. carica gel, especially in the group receiving daily treatment, was less than the mean size of the lesions in the control group, yet, the differences was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). The findings of the current study demonstrated that the 5% F. carica latex with a 3-week course of treatment had no considerable effect in recovery or control of CL induced by L. major in the murine model. Using higher concentration of F. carica latex and with longer treatment lengths may increase its efficacy in the treatment of CL.
