Green manuring is a promising technology to enrich soils with organic matter especially with nitrogen to boost up rice production. An experiment was, therefore, conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during boro season of 2013 to evaluate the residual effect of Sesbania green manure on the growth and yield of BRRI dhan28. There were nine treatments laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results demonstrate that the treatment T8 containing 75% recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) and green manure incorporated at 70 DAS produced the highest grain yield of 4967 kg ha-1 and straw yield of 5359 kg ha-1. The lowest grain yield (4208 kg ha-1) and straw yield (4352 kg ha-1) were recorded for the treatment T1 (GM incorporated at 40 DAS + 50% RD of NF). Green manure exerted significant residual effect on grain N uptake, straw N uptake and total N uptake of BRRI dhan28. The residual effect of green manure was the higher in producing rice yields in treatments with the application of 75% of recommended N fertilizer with green manure incorporated at 50 or 70 DAS.J. An experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to November, 2012 to study the combined effects of Sesbania green manure incorporation with different levels of nitrogen fertilizer on the growth and yield of BINA dhan7. There were five treatments for using Sesbania as pre-rice green manure (GM): Fallow (No GM), GM for incorporation at 40, 50, 60, and 70 days after sowing (DAS). T. Aman was planted after chopping the GM. For T. aman there were 9 treatments: Fallow plot received full dose (180 kg urea ha-1) of N fertilizer while plots with GM received 50 and 75% of recommended N fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The highest grain yield of 5752 kg ha-1 and straw yield of 6654 kg ha-1 were observed in the plot treated with 75%recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) and green manure incorporated at 50 DAS. The lowest grain yield (4783 kg ha-1) and straw yield (5154 kg ha-1) were recorded with GM incorporated at 40 DAS + 50% RDN. The N content and uptake by the grain and straw were differed significantly due to different treatments and maximum uptake was recorded with the application of 75% recommended dose of nitrogen (RDN) and green manure incorporated at 50 DAS. An experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during winter (Rabi) season of 2013-14 to evaluate the effect of integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth, yield and nitrogen (N) uptake of wheat. There were six treatments such as T0 (control), T1 [STB-CF (HYG)], T2 [STB-CF (HYG) + CD (5 t/ha)], T3 [STB-CF (HYG) +PM (3 t/ha)], T4 [STB-CF (HYG) COM (5 t/ha)] and T5 [FP (Farmers’ practice)]. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. Soil test based nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur, zinc and boron were used @ 100, 20, 60, 10, 3 and 2 kg ha-1, respectively. The integrated use of organic and inorganic fertilizers significantly increased the yield attributes as well as grain and straw yields of wheat. The treatment T3 [STB-CF (HYG) + PM (3 tha-1)] produced the highest grain yield of 3554 kg ha-1 (69.67% increase over control) and straw yield of 3635 kg ha-1 (62.83% increase over control). The lowest grain yield (2094 kg ha-1) and straw yield (2232 kg ha-1) were found in control treatment. The N content and uptake by wheat were also markedly influenced by combined use of organic and inorganic fertilizers and the treatment T3 demonstrated superior performance to other treatments. So, the applications of fertilizers in combination with poultry manure @ 3 t ha-1 can be used for the successful cultivation of wheat in Old Brahmaputra Floodplain soil. Progressive Agriculture 27 (2): 149-153, 2016

Four field experiments were carried out with Binadhan 7 at Birgonj, Dinajpur; Debigonj, Panchagarh; Kaligonj, Lalmonirhat and Pirgonj, Rangpur during T.aman (kharif II) season of 2011 in the Old Himalalayan Piedmont Plain (AEZ 1) and Tista Meander Floodplain Soils of North-West Bangladesh. The experiments were designed with eight treatments and laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatment combinations were: T1 (100%STB), T2 (T1 + 25% N), T3 (T1 + 25% NP), T4 (T1 + 25% NK), T5 (T1 + 25% PK), T6 (T1 + 25% NPK), T7 (75% of T1) and T8 (Control). Results indicated that application of different fertilizers significantly affected the grain yield at all of the four locations. The highest grain yield was found in treatment T6 (T1 + 25% NPK). Statistically identical yield was observed in treatments T3, T4 and T5 at Dinajpur; T3 at Panchagar; T2, T3, and T4 at Lalmonirhat and T2 at Rangpur. All the treatment combinations gave significantly higher grain yield over the control at all of the locations. The highest straw yield was found in treatment T6 (T1 + 25% NPK). Statistically identical straw yield was found in T3 and T4 at Dinajpur; T1, T4 and T5 at Panchagar; T2, T4, T5 and T7 Lalmonirhat and all treatments except T7 and T8 at Rangpur. Significantly the lowest yield was obtained in the control treatment (T8) in all of the locations. The highest total N uptake was observed in treatment T6 at all of the four locations. For total P uptake, the similar trend of total N uptake was observed for all the locations. Treatment T6 showed the highest uptake of total K at all locations. The highest uptake of total S was observed in treatment T6 at Dinajpur, Panchagarh and Lalmonirhat. But the highest uptake of total S was observed in treatment T3 at Rangpur. However, the lowest total N, P, K and S uptake was observed in control treatment (T8) at all locations. The partial budget analysis of T.aman rice demonstrated the highest net benefit of tkha-1 85,598/-, 78,619/-, 58,308/- and 72,532/- in T6 treatment followed by tkha-1 76,348/- in T4 treatment, 71,100/- in T3 treatment, 54,192/- in T3 treatment and 68,247/- in T2 treatment where the highest MBCR of 5.40, 3.75, 2.20 and 3.84 was also observed in T6 treatment at Dinajpur, Panchagarh, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur, respectively. Based on most profitable treatments, fertilizer doses of N80P8K40S8Zn1 in Birgonj, Dinajpur; N84P8K40S6Zn1 in Debigonj, Panchagarh; N80P8K40S6Zn1 in Kaligonj, Lalmonirhat and N81P8K35S8Zn1 in Pirgonj, Rangpur could be recommended for higher yield of Binadhan-7 rice in North-West Bangladesh.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jesnr.v6i2.22106 J. AbstractIn this study, we explored the role of biochar (BC) and/or urease inhibitor (UI) in mitigating ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) discharge from urea fertilized wheat cultivated fields in Pakistan (34.01°N, 71.71°E). The experiment included five treatments [control, urea (150 kg N ha−1), BC (10 Mg ha−1), urea + BC and urea + BC + UI (1 L ton−1)], which were all repeated four times and were carried out in a randomized complete block design. Urea supplementation along with BC and BC + UI reduced soil NH3 emissions by 27% and 69%, respectively, compared to sole urea application. Nitrous oxide emissions from urea fertilized plots were also reduced by 24% and 53% applying BC and BC + UI, respectively, compared to urea alone. Application of BC with urea improved the grain yield, shoot biomass, and total N uptake of wheat by 13%, 24%, and 12%, respectively, compared to urea alone. Moreover, UI further promoted biomass and grain yield, and N assimilation in wheat by 38%, 22% and 27%, respectively, over sole urea application. In conclusion, application of BC and/or UI can mitigate NH3 and N2O emissions from urea fertilized soil, improve N use efficiency (NUE) and overall crop productivity.

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) sub-staion, Tajhat, Ranpure, using potato-Boro-T. aman rice cropping pattern with an objective to evaluate the direct and residual effects of sulphur and zinc on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake by the crops. The surface soil was sandy loam texture, pH 6.3, organic matter 1.24%, available sulphur 6.62 ppm and available zinc 0.45 ppm. The experiment comprised of eight treatments for potato S15Zn2 (T2, T4 and T8, S8Zn1 (T5 and T6)and S0Zn0 (T1, T3 and T7), for boro rice S20Zn4 (T3, T5, T6 and T7) and S0Zn0 (T1, T3, T4 and T6). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Average tuber yield of potato (var. cardinal) varied from 28.29 to 32.86 t ha-1 with the highest yield in S15Zn2 treatment (100% recommended dose) and the lowest was in the S0Zn0 treatment (control). In the second crop (Boro rice), growth and yield attributes, grain and straw yields responded significantly to S and Zn applied either in the first crop or in both crops. The average grain yield varied from 3.51 to 5.27 t ha-1 over the treatments. In the third crop (T. aman rice), the grain and straw yields responded significantly to S and Zn applied either in the first and second crop or in the third crops. The grain yield of T. aman rice varied from 2.96 to 4.46 t ha-1 over the treatments. The growth and yield contributing characters were also significantly influenced by the treatment. The research was conducted to monitor the influent of abattoir wastewater compost on rice growth and yield in Benin-Owah River Basin in Illah, Delta State, Nigeria. The compost was applied at 0, 2.5, 5.0, 10 t/ha, and NPK15:15:15 at 250 kg/ha laid in randomized complete block design with four replicates. Rice seeds were sown for two years, and residual effects were evaluated in the third year. Rice plant height, stem circumference, and the number of tillers was measured at two weeks intervals while rice yields have taken at harvest. Soil samples were taken yearly to monitor nutrient changes. Data obtained were analyzed with analysis of variance and mean separated with Duncan Multiple Range Test at α0.05. In the first year, NPK15:15:15 significantly gave the highest dry matter (6.28±1.45 t/ha) and grain yield (2.4±0.53 t/ha). While in the second year, 10 t/ha treatment produced the dry matter (7.69±1.60 t/ha) and grain yield (2.6±0.53 t/ha). In a residual study, the highest grain yield (2.8±0.72 t/ha) was produced in the plot treated with 10 t/ha, and it also gave the highest pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available P content. The compost at the rate of 10 t/ha can increase soil fertility and rice yield.

The decline in rice yields as a result of excessive chemical fertilizer (CF) inputs is a matter of great concern in rice-growing regions of Asia. In two-year’s field experiments, the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) status, growth characteristics and yield of rice were examined by application of poultry manure (PM), cow manure (CM) and compost (CP). Organic fertilizers were applied as EMN (estimated mineralizable N) based on their total N content. Six treatments were assigned in a randomized complete block design: (1) no-N fertilizer (N0); (2) 50% CF (CF50), (3) 100% CF (CF100); 50% CF + 50% EMN from (4) PM or (5) CM or (6) CP. Compared with CF100, the CF50PM50 (total N ≥ 4%) accumulated higher N, P and K content in leaf, sheath, panicle and seeds, resulting in greater growth and yield. The CF50PM50 increased yield by 8.69% and 9.70%, dry matter by 4.76% and 5.27% over CF100 in both years. The continuous application of CF50CM50 (total N < 4%) and CF50CP50 (total N < 4%) treatments led to similar NPK contents but higher yields than those of CF100 treatment in 2018. In conclusion, the organic fertilizer (total N ≥ 4%) with the EMN method enhances higher N availability in each year. Continuous application of organic fertilizer (total N < 4%) over two years effectively increased N availability in the second year. The 50% organic fertilizer (total N ≥ 4%) and 50% CF led to increased NPK availability and rice yields over the 100% CF treatment, reducing CF usage and leading for sustainable agriculture.

The object of the study was to obtain the types of application of Glirisidia green manures on the growth and yield of organic rice lowland. The experimental pot experiment was carried out in a randomized block design consisting of one factor and three replications. The treatment factor was 10 various application of Glirisidia leaves. The treatments are: 100% fresh Glirisidia leaves + 0% compost; 60% fresh Glirisidia leaves + 40% compost; 40% fresh Glirisidia leaves + 60% compost; 100% wind-dried Glirisidia leaves + 0% compost; 60% of wind-dried Glirisidia leaves + 40% compost; 40% wind-dried Glirisidia leaves + 60% compost; 100% sun-dried Glirisidia leaves + 0% compost; 60% of the sun-dried Glirisidia leaves + 40% of compost; 40% of the sun-dried Glirisidia leaves + 60% compost; and 0% Glirisidia leaves + 100% compost. The results showed that the various application of Glirisidia leaves increased the grain yield 34, 09% compared to the application of 0% Glirisidia leaf + 100% compost. The grain/ hill of yield could be improved by application of 100% fresh Glirisidia leaves + 0% compost (164,47 g grain/hill), 100% of wind-dried Gliricidia leaves (165,55 g grain/ hill) + 0% compost, or 100% sun-dried Gliricidia leaves + 0% compost (169,14 g grain/ hill). Keywords—: organic rice lowland; green manure; various application of Glirisidia leaves.

An experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2011 to March 2012 to evaluate the effect of integrated use of manures and fertilizers on the growth, yield and nutrient uptake by wheat. There were six treatments such as T0 (Control), T1 [STB-CF (HYG)], T2 [CD + STB-CF (HYG)], T3 [PM + STB-CF (HYG)], T4 [COM + STB-CF (COM)] and T5 [FP (Farmers’ practice)]. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with four replications. The integrated use of manures and fertilizers significantly influenced the yield attributes as well as grain and straw yields of wheat. The treatment T1 [STB-CF (HYG)] produced the tallest plant of 90.17 cm which was identical with T3 [PM + STB-CF (HYG)] and the lowest value was found in control. The 1000-grain weight followed the similar pattern but the tillers hill-1, spike length and spikelets spike-1 did not follow any definite trend. The treatment T3 [PM + STB-CF (HYG)] produced the highest grain yield of 4362 kg ha-1 (90.4% increase over control) and straw yield of 5492 kg ha-1 (84.79% increase over control). The lowest grain yield (2291 kg ha-1) and straw yield (2972 kg ha-1) were found in T0 (Control). The NPKS uptake by wheat was markedly influenced by combined use of manures and fertilizers and the treatment T3 demonstrated superior performance to other treatments. So the treatment T3 comprising poultry manure in combination with chemical fertilizers on IPNS basis was found to be the best combination of manures and fertilizers for obtaining the maximum yield and quality of wheat at BAU farm. The present investigation was executed at Agricultural Research Field, Noakahali Science and Technology University, Noakhali, Bangladesh to access the effects of variety and integrated application of vermicompost, biochar and urea on efficiency of boro rice yield. The experiment was accomplished during the period from November 2018 to May 2019. It was completed in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments assigned in a factorial arrangement of 2 × 4, with 2 varieties of rice (V1-BINA dhan 8, V2- BINA dhan 10) and 4 integration of vermicompost, biochar, and urea (T1: Vermicompost-2.5 t ha-1, T2: Vermicompost-2 t ha-1+ Biochar 0.5 t ha-1, T3: Vermicompost-1.5 t ha-1+ Biochar 1 t ha-1 and T4: Vermicompost-1.5 t ha-1 + Urea-150kg ha-1/0.15 t ha-1). Data were collected to analyze growth and yield contributing characters of boro rice. All the parameters were not statistically significant to differ. According to variety highest grain (3.73 t ha-1) and straw (2.8 t ha-1) yield was found from BINA dhan 10 in comparison with BINA dhan 8. In case of integrated application of vermicompost, biochar and urea, superior grain and straw yield were obtained from T4: Vermicompost-1.5 t ha-1 + Urea-0.15 t ha-1 whereas lowest grain yield (3.01 t ha-1 recorded from integrated application vermicompost and biochar. In combine maximum grain (4.92 t ha-1) and straw (4.40 t ha-1) yield was noted from BINA dhan 10 alone with integrated application of vermicompost and urea whereas the lowest data (grain: 2.50 t ha-1; straw: 1.64 t ha-1) was found from BINA dhan 8 along with vermicompost and biochar.
