Changes in the level of phenolics, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins with leaf positions were studied in L. camara twigs. Leaves at different positions (from apex to base) in a twig represented gradient increase in the leaf age, apical being the youngest leaves. The study showed that the fresh weight, dry weight and area of the leaves increased rapidly from I until IV position in a twig. Levels of phenolics remained unchanged from I to V leaf position, while a sharp increase in the levels of proanthocyanidins and flavonoids was observed during I to III leaf position which decreased markedly thereafter. At any leaf position in a twig, the level of proanthocynidin was higher than both phenolics and flavonoids, while the proportion of flavonoids was much higher than the phenolics. In fact, phenolics were present in very small amounts. In addition, antioxidant potential of leaves extracts was measured in terms of reducing and scavenging activity. The study revealed that extracts prepared from leaves present from I to III position exhibited significantly higher antioxidant activities than the leaves present from IV to V position. The study thus revealed that leaf positions (age) influence the level of secondary metabolites and thereby their antioxidant properties. Objective: To estimate the in vitro total phenolics, flavonoids contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of various solvent extracts from the medicinal plant Physalis minima Linn.Methods: The crude bioactive were extracted from the dried powder of Physalis minima using methanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform and hexane solvents. Total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were estimated using Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminium chloride colorimetric methods respectively. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were used to determine the in vitro antioxidant capacity. The antimicrobial assay was done through agar well diffusion; minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined using broth microdilution methods against the Gram-negative bacteria (Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus).Results: TPC expressed as gallic acid equivalents (GAE) ranged from 60.27±1.73-151.25±2.50 mg GAE/g dry weight, and TFC expressed as quercetin equivalents (QE) ranged from 56.66±0.80-158.84±2.30 mg QE/g dry weight. Methanol extract showed the highest antioxidant activity followed by ethyl acetate, chloroform, hexane extract and the IC50 values of methanol extract for scavenging DPPH and ABTS free radicals were 280.23±5.75-173.40±0.38µg/ml, respectively. All the extracts have shown potent antimicrobial activity for the zone of inhibition ranged from 9-35 mm; MICs and MBCs values ranged from 0.125-4.0 and 0.25-8.0 mg/ml, respectively towards tested pathogenic species.Conclusion: The comprehensive analysis of the present results demonstrated that Physalis minima possess high potential antioxidant properties which could be used as a viable source of natural antioxidants in treating infections caused by above-mentioned pathogens.

The aim of the study was to characterize antioxidative properties and antiradical activity of the herbal syrups collection in Latvia. Spectrophotometry was used to characterize antioxidant properties of herbal syrups. Antiradical activity, total phenols and content of flavonoids were determined spectrophotometrically. The antiradical scavenging activity was measured by the DPPH (2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) reaction. The herbal syrups antiradical scavenging activity was estimated by the amount of DPPH of reagent using in reaction with a sample of vegetable syrup (in percent) and by Trolox equivalent. The total phenolic compounds were determined by using the Folin – Ciocalteu method. The total phenolic content was expressed in mg of the gallic acid equivalents. The content of flavonoids was determined by using reaction between the AlCl3 and flavonoids. Antiradical scavenging activity by Trolox equivalent of the herbal syrups was found from 81 to be 130 mg 100 g-1 herbal syrups. The content of total phenols was found from 22 to be 282 mg GAE 100 g-1, but content of total flavonoids by quercetin equivalent was found from 1 to 44 mg QE 100 g-1. In case of increased disease problems, syrups with increased antioxidant content should be used. However, the specificity of each disease should be taken into account as well as the content of certain compounds in the plants.

Tetra-zwitterionic-substituted nickel(II) phthalocyanine derivatives were newly synthesized starting from nonionic 2(3),9(10),16(17),23(24)-tetrakis-[2-([Formula: see text]-((3-dimethylamino)propyl)carbamate)oxyethyl)phthalocyaninato nickel (II). The novel compounds have been characterized by a combination of UV-vis, FT-IR and mass spectroscopies and elemental analysis. The critical micelle concentrations of the prepared compounds were measured, and the antioxidant activities were analyzed with radical scavenging ability of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and with 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS). The zwitterionic molecules showed aggregated spectra in the UV-vis region, and they might be good surfactant candidates for the detergent industry with their appropriate critical micelle concentration (CMC) properties in water. The compounds exhibited ABTS radical scavenging activity and thus they have antioxidant activity.

Reactive oxygen (ROS) and nitrogen species (RNS) are produced in all cells and play important roles in physiology. The loss of the redox balance, either by an increase of oxidant molecules ROS and RNS or by decreased antioxidant system activities cause a state of oxidative stress. Several studies are going on worldwide directed towards finding natural antioxidants of plant origin. Plants containing phenolic compounds have been reported to possess strong antioxidant activity. The objective of this study is to evaluate total polyphenols and flavonoids contents (TPC and TFC) as well as examine the in vitro antioxidative properties from aqueous extract of Ammoides atlantica (AqE). TPC was estimated utilizing Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent. TFC was evaluated utilizing the aluminum chloride method. The antioxidant properties were evaluated using metal chelating and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) assays. Indeed, results showed that the AqE is rich in polyphenols (141.74±0.44 µg gallic acid equivalents/ mg of dry weight), and flavonoids (61.87±6.7 µg quercetin equivalent/ mg dry weight). These phytochemical compounds possess significant antioxidant activities. The results showed that AqE exhibited a good Metal chelating activity with an IC50 of 36.57±4.73 µg/ mL. CUPRAC assay showed that AqE extract exhibited high cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity with an A0.5 of 8.58±0.13 µg/mL. These findings provide evidence that AqE of Ammoides atlantica is a potential source of antioxidant which have many benefits towards human health. Callus cultures from stems, leaves and roots of colocynth were initiated on MS media supplemented with various combinations of 2,4 dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) with kinetin (KIN) and benzyladenine (BA) with α-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The highest percentage of callus formation frequency (98.9%) was obtained from stem explants grown on MS media supplemented with (1.0 mg/L) 2,4-D + (1.0 mg/L) KIN. The total phenolics and flavonoid content of the colocynth callus cultures were measured. The results showed that the MS medium supplemented with 6.0 mg/L 2,4-D + 2.0 mg/L KIN (MD3) gave the highest content of total phenolics (19.2 mg/100g d.w.) in leaf-derived calli. The highest content of flavonoids (47.3 mg/100g d.w.) was obtained in stem derived calli grown on the same medium (MD3). Antioxidant activities of extracts were determined using different assays, including DPPH radical scavenging activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) scavenging activity and ferric reducing power. Leaf-derived calli cultured on MS medium + 2.0 mg/L 2,4-D + 1.0 mg/L KIN (MD1) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (85.3%). The highest percentage of H2O2 scavenging activity (61.4%) was detected in leaf explant-derived calli growing on MD1. The leaf-derived calli growing on (MD3) gave the highest ferric reducing power (22.3 μg/g d.w.), compared to the activities of stems, leaves and roots of in vitro grown seedlings (3.28, 12.9 and 2.85 μg/g d.w.), which were used as controls. On the basis of the current findings, we conclude that MS media supplemented with different combinations of 2,4-D and KIN yields higher phenolics, flavonoids contents and antioxidant activities than MS media supplemented with BA and NAA.

Dryland in Indonesia has been dominated by acid soils, so that availability of phosphate (P) becomes the main obstacle in improving outcomes and only 10-30% of fertilizer P can be utilized by plants. One of the solution to meet the needs of phosphate is by utilization of mycorrhizal biofertilizer. These experiments were divided into several phases: 1) Looking for phases of mycorrhizal, 2) the laboratory analysis, 3) Testing phase on plants that were carried out by using polybags with sterile soil. The experiment was designed with a complete randomized block design (RAKL) by using a factor that consists of 6 treatments that are: 1) Without mycorrhizal inoculum (M0), 2) Mycorrhizal inoculum 5 g + 50 Spores (M5), 3) Mycorrhizal inoculum 10 g + 50 spores (M10), 4) Mycorrhizal inoculum 15 g + 50 spores (M15), 5) Mycorrhizal inoculum 20 g + 50 spores (M20), 6) Commercial mycorrhizal 10 g (Mk). All treatments were repeated four times so that the total 24 pot experiment. The experiment results show that mycorrhizal treatment given on the corn crop has very significant (P <0.01) to the number of leaf age of 35, 49, 63 days after, leaf wide have age 49 days after plant, fresh weight, oven-dry weight, absorb P, number of spores, mycorrhizal infection and significant effect (P <0.05) to plant height age of 35, 49, 63 day after plant, 63 days after plant, leaf wide, and P-available. Based on the results of this study will be suggested, in order to enhance the growth of corn plants can be used locally mikroiza a dose of 10 g + 50 spores.

In this study, the effects of different fruit parts and extraction conditions on the antioxidant properties of jujube (Ziziphus jujuba Mill.) fruit were investigated. Five in vitro antioxidant models and statistical analyses were performed. The results revealed that jujube peel with pulp (peel pulp) exhibited better antioxidant capacity than did seeds. Overall, jujube peel pulp extracted using 50% ethanol at 60 °C exhibited the best antioxidant capacity in terms of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity (0.3 ± 0 mg/mL), 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activity (0.5 ± 0 mg/mL), total phenolic content (38.3 ± 0.4 mg gallic acid equivalent per gram dry weight), total flavonoid content (43.8 ± 0.2 mg quercetin equivalent per gram dry weight), and reducing power (41.9 ± 2.2 mg ascorbic acid equivalent per gram dry weight). The results indicated that jujube peel pulp is a more potential natural antioxidant than seeds.

Heterogeneous method for grafting of syringaldehyde (SD) onto chitosan by laccase oxidation, yielding a product with improved antioxidant activities. The results showed that about 1.1% amino groups participated in this reaction. The FTIR showed that the absorption of amino groups were decreased, the absorption of benzene ring structures were disappeared and a new band appeared at 1637 cm-1 corresponding to C=N vibrations that were due to the Schiff base reaction between the chitosan and syringaldehyde. Additionally, the chitosan had insignificant reducing power and DPPH free radical scavenging activity, SD-chitosan had reducing power of A700=0.684, DPPH free radical scavenging activity of 53.2%. SD-chitosan presented improved antioxidant properties.

Olive leaf extracts are of special interest due to their proven therapeutic effects. However, they are still considered a by-product of the table olive and the oil industries. In order to learn possible ways of exploiting this waste for health purposes, we investigated the phytochemical profiles and antioxidant activities in the leaves of 15 Italian Olea europaea L. cultivars grown in the same pedoclimatic conditions. The phenolic profiles and amounts of their seven representative compounds were analyzed using HPLC ESI/MS-TOF. The antioxidant activities were determined using three different antioxidant assays (DPPH, ORAC, and superoxide anion scavenging assay). Wide ranges of total phenolic content (11.39–48.62 g GAE kg−1 dry weight) and antioxidant activities (DPPH values: 8.67–29.89 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight, ORAC values: 0.81–4.25 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight, superoxide anion scavenging activity values: 27.66–48.92 µmol TE mg−1 dry weight) were found in the cultivars. In particular, the cultivars Itrana, Apollo, and Maurino, showed a high amount of total phenols and antioxidant activity, and therefore represent a suitable natural source of biological compounds for use in terms of health benefits.

Six purple corn grains were chosen to investigate their antioxidant activities and the relationships between anthocyanins and phenolics contents with antioxidant activities. Purple grains were screened for their antioxidant potentials using various in-vitro models such as superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and reducing power at various concentrations. The result showed that ZS39 and FS11 exhibited the highest anthocyanins and total phenolics contents. ZS39 and FS11 also exhibited the highest superoxide anion radical scavenging activity. There was no significant difference among the reducing power of six different purple corn grain extracts. It was found that there were positive correlations between anthocyanins and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity or reducing power, R2=0.9911, R2=0.9873, respectively. Whereas the correlations between total phenolics and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity or reducing power, R2=0.9863, R2=0.9826, respectively. It suggested that purple corn appeared to be a rich and interesting source of natural antioxidants.
