The steady flow behavior of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid between two parallel infinite insulated horizontal porous plates with heat transfer is investigated along with the effect of an external uniform transverse magnetic field, the action of inflow normal to the plates, the pressure gradient on the flow and temperature. The fluid viscosity is supposed to vary exponentially with the temperature. A numerical solution for the governing equations for both the momentum transfer and energy transfer has been developed using the finite difference method. The velocity and temperature distribution graphs have been presented under the influence of different values of magnetic inclination, fluid pressure gradient, inflow acting perpendicularly on the plates, temperature dependent viscosity and the Hartmann number. In our study viscosity is shown to affect the velocity graph. The flow parameters such as viscosity, pressure and injection of fluid normal to the plate can cause reverse flow. For highly viscous fluid, reverse flow is observed. The effect of magnetic force helps to restrain this reverse flow.

The direct and optimal control solution of laminar fully developed, steady Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) flow of an incompressible, electrically conducting power-law non-Newtonian fluid in a square duct is considered with the heat transfer. The fluid is subjected to an external uniform magnetic field as well as a constant pressure gradient. The apparent fluid viscosity is both a function of the unknown velocity and the flow index which makes the momentum equation nonlinear. Viscous and Joule dissipation terms are also included. The direct problem is solved by using Galerkin finite element method (FEM) with mixed finite elements and the control problem approach is the discretize-then-optimize procedure. The control formulations with the flow index parameter and the Hartmann number are given to regain the desired velocity profile and temperature isolines of the MHD flow.

Analytical approximations are developed to predict the effect of a temperature-dependent viscosity on convective heat transfer through liquids in fully developed turbulent pipe flow. The analysis expresses the heat transfer coefficient ratio for variable to constant viscosity in terms of the friction factor ratio for variable to constant viscosity, Tw, Tb, and a fluid viscosity-temperature parameter β. The results are independent of any particular eddy diffusivity distribution. The formulas developed here represent an analytical approximation to the model developed by Goldmann. These approximations are in good agreement with numerical solutions of the model nonlinear differential equation. To compare the results of these calculations with experimental data, a knowledge of the effect of variable viscosity on the friction factor is required. When available correlations for the friction factor are used, the results given here are seen to agree well with experimental heat transfer coefficients over a considerable range of μw/μb.

A numerical simulation of flow of oil blob through a capillary tube constriction is presented. The simulation was run in a 2D axisymmetric model. Water is injected at the inlet to mobilize oil blob placed near the capillary tube constriction. Transient flow images were used to understand the flow evolution process. Results from the study show that pulsed injection effectively assisted to squeeze out the oil blob through the capillary tube constriction with shorter time compared to continuous injection.  Pulsed injection reduced the time required for the first droplet to cross the capillary tube constriction by about 3 folds compared to continuous injection. In addition, the droplet that crossed the constriction is larger when the flow was pulsed. In both cases, there is a reverse flow in the opposite direction of the injection. However, the severity of the reverse flow is stronger in the case of continuous injection. Immediately downstream the constriction, there is an adverse pressure gradient zone during continuous injection which limits the mobility of droplet that crossed the constriction. However, in the case of pulsed injection, there is a favorable pressure gradient zone immediately downstream the constriction. This zone expedites mobility of droplets that cross the constriction by transporting them further downstream through suction effect. Apparently, pulsed injection eases off the adverse pressure gradient and allowed more volume of oil to pass through the constriction. Within about two periods of pulsation, 84% of original oil placed at the beginning crossed the constriction compared to only 35% in the case of continuous injection. Even though the same amount of water was injected in both cases, pulsed injection clearly altered the flow behavior. The observation from this study may be extended to more complex flows in order to tailor the method for certain specific applications, such as flow of residual oil through a reservoir.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of second-order slip and magnetic field on the nonlinear mixed convection stagnation-point flow toward a vertical permeable stretching/shrinking sheet in an upper convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid with variable surface temperature. Numerical results are obtained using the bvp4c function from matlab for the reduced skin-friction coefficient, the rate of heat transfer, the velocity, and the temperature profiles. The results indicate that multiple (dual) solutions exist for a buoyancy opposing flow for certain values of the parameter space irrespective to the types of surfaces whether it is stretched or shrinked. It is found that an applied magnetic field compensates the suction velocity for the existence of the dual solutions. Depending on the parametric conditions; elastic parameter, magnetic field parameter, first- and second-order slip parameters significantly controls the flow and heat transfer characteristics. The illustrated streamlines show that for upper branch solutions, the effects of stretching and suction are direct and obvious as the flow near the surface is seen to suck through the permeable sheet and drag away from the origin of the sheet. However, aligned but reverse flow occurs for the case of lower branch solutions when the mixed convection effect is less significant.

This study may be applicable in heavy power engine and cooling of a nuclear reactor, insulation for buildings, petroleum reservoir operations, and magnetic material processing solar energy collectors. In this manuscript, the slip results are evaluated for the non-Newtonian fluid on the oblique stagnation point flow of induced magnetic field over the oscillating surface. The valuation of heat flux is examined through the Fourier law of heat transfer. The metallic nanoparticle Copper Cu is within the base fluid, and water is utilized in the analysis. Nanofluids have benefits such as steadiness of the working fluid, decreasing blockage, clogs, decreasing prices, decreasing the friction coefficient, and decreasing the size of the heat transfer system. Similarity variables are utilized to convert the developed flow into higher nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations (ODE) which are tackled numerically using a mathematical technique such as the bvp4c method in Maple and Matlab software. According to the present geometry, the flow behavior of the operating nanofluid has analyzed by stream lines. Disparities in velocity and temperature profile are demonstrated by graphs to describe the effects of controlling parameters. The Casson fluid parameter enhances the velocity of the fluid. The system heats up by the impact of Joule heating and dissipation.

The present paper is concerned with the study of flow and heat transfer characteristics in the steady state free convective flow of Al2O3-waternanofluids in a square enclosure in the presence of magnetic field. Attention is given to the temperature variation of the electrical conductivity and its effect on the electromagnetic force induced by the motion of the nanofluid. A new experimental correlation recently presented in the literature was used for this aim. In all the earlier studies in this area the electrical conductivity variation of nanofluid with temperature was neglected. The fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity are assumed to vary as a function of temperature and this variation is modeled using the available experimental correlations. The governing differential equations are solved numerically using finite element method. The features of fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed for various strengths of the magnetic field and different nanoparticle volume fractions. The results show that when the inclusion of the variation of the electrical conductivity with temperature in the numerical model noticeably affects the natural convection heat transfer in the studied rectangular cavity. The variations of Nusselt number for natural convection of Al2O3-water nanofluid with nanoparticle volume fractions are presented at various Rayleigh and Hartmann numbers.

The hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of electroosmotic and pressure-driven flows of power-law fluids are examined in a semicircular microchannel under the constant wall heat flux condition. For sufficiently large values of the electrokinetic radius, the Debye length is thin; the active flow within the electric double layer (EDL) drags the rest of the liquid due to frictional forces arising from the fluid viscosity, and consequently a plug-like velocity profile is attained. The velocity ratio can affect the pure electrokinetic flow as well as the flow rate depending on the applied pressure gradient direction. Since the effective viscosity of shear-thinning fluids near the wall is quite small compared to the shear-thickening fluids, the former exhibits higher dimensionless velocities than the later close to the wall; the reverse is true at the middle section. Poiseuille number increases with increasing the flow behavior index and/or the electrokinetic radius. Due to the comparatively stronger axial advection and radial diffusion in shear-thinning fluids, better temperature uniformity is achieved in the channel. Reduction of Nusselt number continues as far as the fully developed region where it remains unchanged; as the electrokinetic radius tends to infinity, Nusselt number approaches a particular value (not depending on the flow behavior index).
