In this research the canal silt from the Kabul River Canal was recycled to manufacture artificial aggregate. For making artificial aggregates three batches were prepared each of dry weight of 100kg. The composition of artificial aggregate is Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA), Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Silt was mixed in different proportions (by weight). Three batches were made having values of PVA varying from 0, 1 and 2 percent, cement content was 20, 19 and 18 percent respectively, and the quantity of silt used was kept constant (80%) in each batch. Samples were prepared from these three different batches and were cured for 28 days. After completion of the curing time, they were crushed to get the desired course aggregate. A number of tests were performed to check the viability of artificial aggregates for being used as a lightweight aggregate. Shape and particles size distribution properties of artificial aggregates were as that of the natural aggregate but not satisfactory at high silt content. The reductions in the specific gravity of the artificial aggregate were also observed compared to natural aggregates.   Index Terms— Artificial Aggregates, Canal Silt, Coarse Aggregates, Lightweight Aggregates, Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA).

In order to attain a satisfactory level of safety and stability in the construction of structures on weak soil, one of the best solutions can be soil improvement. The addition of a certain percentage of some materials to the soil may compensate for its deficiency. Cement is a suitable material to be used for stabilization and modification of a wide variety of soils. By using this material, the engineering properties of soil can be improved. In this study, the effect of soil stabilization with cement on the bearing capacity of a shallow foundation was studied by employing finite element method. The material properties were obtained by conducting experimental tests on cement-stabilized sand. Cement varying from 2% to 8% by soil dry weight was added for stabilization. The effect of reinforced soil block dimensions, foundation width and cement content were investigated. From the results, it can be figured out that by stabilizing the soil below the foundation to certain dimensions with the necessary cement content, the bearing capacity of the foundation will increase to an acceptable level.

Present investigations deal with the development of green concrete (M 30 grade) using recycled coarse aggregates for sustainable development. Characterization of recycled coarse aggregates showed that physical and mechanical properties are of inferior quality and improvement in properties was observed after washing due to removal of old weak mortar adhered on its surface. The influence of natural coarse aggregates replacement (50 and 100%) with recycled coarse aggregate on various mechanical and durability properties of hardened concrete were discussed and compared with controls at different w/c ratio. Improvements in all the engineering properties of hardened concrete were observed using washed recycled coarse aggregates. The compressive strength of 28-day hardened concrete containing 100% washed recycled aggregate was slightly lower (7%) than concrete prepared with natural aggregates. Water absorption, carbonation, and rapid chloride penetration test were conducted to assess the durability of the concrete. Concrete was found moderately permeable for chloride ions penetration and no carbonation was observed in all the concrete mixes studied.

Expanded shale lightweight aggregates, as the coarse aggregates, were used to produce lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) in this research. At the fixed water-cement ratio, paste quantity, and aggregate volume, the effects of various aggregate gradations on the engineering properties of LWAC were investigated. Comparisons to normal-weight concrete (NWC) made under the same conditions were carried out. From the experimental results, using normal weight aggregates that follow the specification requirements (standard gradation) obtained similar NWC compressive strength to that using uniform-sized aggregates. However, the compressive strength of LWAC made using small uniform-sized aggregates was superior to that made from standard-grade aggregates. This is especially conspicuous under the low water-cement ratio. Even though the workability was affected, this problem could be overcome with developed chemical additive technology. The durability properties of concrete were approximately equal. Therefore, it is suggested that the aggregate gradation requirement of LWAC should be distinct from that of NWC. In high strength LWAC proportioning, following the standard gradation suggested by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) is optional.

In this article, the effect of prolonged fire (24-hour duration) on reinforced concrete beams made with recycled aggregates from demolished concrete was experimentally investigated. Demolished concrete was used recycled coarse aggregates in equal proportion with natural coarse aggregates. Normal and rich mix concrete with water-cement ratio equal to 0.54 were used. As a control specimen, beams with all-natural aggregates were also cast to compare with the results of the proposed beams. All beams were cured for 28 days and exposed to fire at 1000°C in an oven for 24 hours. After the elapse of this fire period, the beams were allowed to air cool, followed by testing till failure in a universal load testing machine. Comparison of the test results shows that rich mix concrete beams more reduction in flexural strength, more increase in maximum load carrying capacity and deflection than normal mix beams. The maximum reduction in flexural strength was 32.41% for beams cast with 50% RCA and rich mix. Although the fire duration used in this study is rare, yet the outcome provides guidelines for taking proper decisions for retrofitting/strengthening of the fire affected structure before putting it back in service.

The production and use of plastic bottles is increasing tremendously with passing time. These plastic bottles become a problem when they are disposed as they are non-biodegradable. This means that the waste plastic, when dumped, does not decompose naturally and stays in the environment affecting the ecological system. The use of alternative aggregates like Plastic Coarse Aggregate (PCA) is a natural step in solving part of reduction of natural aggregates as well as to solve the issue discussed above. The researchers are trying from half a century to investigate the alternative materials to be replaced in concrete mixture in place of either aggregate or cement.  In this research, the concrete made from plastic waste as coarse aggregates were investigated for compressive strength and Stress-strain relationship. Plastic coarse aggregate have been replaced in place of natural coarse aggregate by different percentages with w/c 0.5, 0.4 and 0.3. The percentage replacement of plastic aggregate in place of mineral coarse aggregate was 25%, 30%, 35% and 40 %. Using Super-plasticizer Chemrite 520-BAS. OPC-53 grade cement was used. Total of forty five Cylinders were prepared based on different combination of Percentage of Plastic aggregate replaced and W/C as discussed above and checked for compressive strength and stress-strain relationship. The compressive strength increases by about 19.25% due to the decrease in W/C from 0.5 to 0.3 for plastic percentage addition of 40%.

Natural resources such as natural material such as stone, sand, asphalt which has long been used by humans for road construction because of the limited experience any material taken will collide with the preservation of the environment so that the construction work of road infrastructure obstacles and ultimately can lead to the work stalled road infrastructure. To overcome these problems it is necessary to the implementation of the technology development of road infrastructure by using recycled (recycling). The purpose of this study is to determine levels of cement that can be used for the top layer foundation (base course) with recycled materials mixed asphalt cement / Cement Treated Recycling Base (CTRB) on road rehabilitation Semarang - Demak and to determine the uncondifined compressive strength that occurs so that the material can be reused as construction material pavement layer. This study uses an experimental method in the laboratory with a cylindrical specimen diameter of 7 cm height of 14 cm made of asphalt pavement scratching Semarang-Demak roads with cement content variation 0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, 6% and 7.5% is used for testing the uncondifined compressive strength / (UCS) at the age of 7 days, 21 days, 14 days and 28 days. The results show that the addition of cement content will increase the value of the dry weight insignificantly, but will rise UCS value significantly and utilization of scratching asphalt cement with added material from these laboratory experiments can increase the carrying capacity CTRB construction. Levels of cement that meets the requirements of Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) for the construction of Cement Treated Recycling Base (CTRB) is between 6% to 7.5%. According to the results of research it is economically to used cement content at average of 6.75% for road rehabilitation works Semarang - Demak has met the required UCS test.

Abstract The most significant difference between recycled and natural concretes lies in aggregates. The performance of recycled coarse aggregates directly affects the characteristics of recycled concrete. Therefore, an in-depth study of aggregate characteristics is of great significance for improving the quality of recycled concrete. Based on the coarse aggregate content, maximum aggregate size, and aggregate shape, this study uses experiments, theoretical analysis, and numerical simulation to reveal the impact of aggregate characteristics on the mechanical properties of recycled concrete. In this study, we selected the coarse aggregate content, maximum aggregate size, and the aggregate shape as design variables to establish the regression equations of the peak stress and elastic modulus of recycled concrete using the response surface methodology. The results showed that the peak stress and elastic modulus of recycled concrete reach the best when the coarse aggregate content is 45%, the maximum coarse aggregate size is 16 mm, and the regular round coarse aggregates occupy 75%. Such results provide a theoretical basis for the resource utilization and engineering design of recycled aggregates.

In remote areas, most roads still use pavements that are very sensitive to climate change, especially those using clay pavements with high plasticity. In addition to the issue of cost, the difficulty of obtaining a proper source of material is another problem that has led to soaring prices for materials. In this regard, a study was conducted using local materials, namely zeolite as a stabilizing material added with waterglass as activating agent. The research began with samples of laterite soil and natural zeolite for XRD test (microstructure testing), and then testing for laterite soil’s index properties and engineering properties, namely Unconfined Compressive Strength and CBR value. The purpose of the test is to determine the correlation between the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) and the soil bearing capacity (CBR) caused by adding zeolite as stabilizer material and waterglass as activator with increasing curing time. Laterite soils contain a brownish red iron oxide. The stabilizing material zeolite contains a crystalline mineral of alumina silicate SiO2. While waterglass composed of sodium meta silicate. Stabilization carried out by mixing 4%, 8%, 12%, 16%, and 20% of zeolite with addition of 2% waterglass, percentage was measured based on soil dry weight. Specimens were tested at curing time of 0, 7, 14, and 28 days. The test result shows increasing UCS and CBR values with increasing percentage of zeolite. At mix of 20% zeolite and 2% waterglass, the unconfined compressive strength reaches 23.54 kg/cm2 with CBR value 58% at 28 days of curing time.
