The United States is in a bind. On the one hand, we need millions of additional citizens with at least one year of successful post-secondary experience to adapt to the knowledge economy. Both the Gates and Lumina Foundations, and our President, have championed this goal in different ways. On the other hand, we have a post-secondary system that is trapped between rising costs and stagnant effectiveness, seemingly unable to respond effectively to this challenge. This paper analyzes several aspects of this problem, describes changes in the society that create the basis for solutions, and offers several examples from Kaplan University of emerging practice that suggests what good practice might look like in a world where quality-assured mass higher education is the norm.

Internationalization of higher education has become an irreversible trend of modern world, where international course is the key link. For Chinese universities, during the transition from traditional ‘Foreign students class’ (for foreign students only) to ‘International class’, in which Chinese students and foreign students will be trained under one roof, they have to face great challenges of teaching transition, including teaching contents, methods, examinations transformations. In this paper, taking materials physics courses for example, we put forward some suggestions on teaching transformation of international education from ‘Foreign students class’ to ‘International class’, basing on the experience of one-year visiting in University of Victoria (UVic), Canada and the differences of teaching between our Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) and UVic.

In 2006, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) released CHED Memorandum Order (CMO) no. 14 which changed the duration of internship training program to six months as opposed to the previous memorandum order, CMO no. 27 s. 1998 which required a one-year internship schedule for Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) students. Thirty-eight graduates of CMO No. 14 s. 2006 from Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas and 13 chief medical technologists (CMT) or senior medical laboratory staff from identified affiliate hospitals were surveyed about their perception on the attainment of the objectives, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the said program. Results show that objectives were achieved even if the duration of the training period was shortened. The graduate-respondents favored the one year timetable. This study can be used as a pilot study for other higher education institutions implementing the same CMO and can be used as a basis for a curricular reform by assessing the different parameters that were identified in order to enhance further the six-month internship training program in producing globally competitive medical laboratory scientists. Keywords - internship training program, medical laboratory science, curriculum improvement, memorandum order, interns, affiliating hospital

Entry into teaching in the future is likely to be via three main routes-the B.Ed. degree, offered in many of the former Colleges of Education; a degree followed by a one-year postgraduate certificate in education; and a concurrent course. All three routes are available in Bath, in either the University or the College of Higher Education, and all are validated by the University. This paper seeks to trace the regional origins of the students who are recruited to these courses and to make some comparison with a more general study of the University's undergraduate intake in 1968 carried out by G. H. Hones (1973). Some similarities exist between the College intake of today and the University intake of 1968, but there are some interesting differences in recruitment to teacher education between the three routes.

The global pandemic of the virus COVID-19 dramatically has impacted Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina and worldwide. HEIs were forced to switch overnight to online lectures and exams without almost any teachers' and students' preparation and education. After one year of online classes at the University of Mostar (SUM), whether that kind of teaching impacts creativity. In order to find the answer to the research question, the authors used a questionnaire they developed and applied in 2015 to investigate students' perceptions about creativity at the University of Mostar. The research presented in this paper is limited to SUM students who have had online classes since March 2020. The primary research goal is to investigate whether there are any significant changes in students' perceptions of creativity compared to research from 2015. Namely, the authors investigate whether the enhanced use of IT and online platforms (Google Meet, SUMARUM – the University of Mostar’s variant of Moodle) affected students' creativity. This paper provides an understanding of the social structure seen as a phenomenology that directs one’s thinking in relation to the interpretation and meaning of life experiences in family institutions where family adaptation is a significant factor in determining the success of expatriate academics. The objective of the study was to unravel expatriate interpretations of expatriation decisions, where such interpretations were debated and taking into account family adaptability as a significant party in determining the success of the assignment of academics who have continuity with the experience of expatriate institutions in the host country. The research was carried out by utilising qualitative methods of in-depth interviews with 20 expatriate academics selected from three Malaysian Public Universities. While the appropriate criteria for respondents include the following characteristics, namely (a) has resided for at least one year in Malaysia using a valid employee visa, (b) has been offered a position as academic staff and has renewed a contract of service, (c) a self-initiated expatriate in undertaking expatriation and (d) work full-time and is not classified as an inter-university exchange staff or on sabbatical leave. The study found that the family factor is the influence of the career environment of an expatriate academic while serving in Malaysia. This is seen as a valuable input for the expatriate academics in adapting to the career of the country’s higher education arena while encouraging retention of expatriate academics in the higher education industry in Malaysia. Two new findings were presented namely (i) moral and emotional support systems which give positive indications of international assignment success, and (ii) support of the relevant social networks with local communities as one of the determinants of expatriate success adapting to the host country environment.

The article presents the justification of the methodology for studying the strategies of financial behavior of the population, the dynamics of their prevalence in Russia in the period 2009—2020, as well as the assessment of the influence of socio-demographic variables on the probability of having a financial strategy in the household. The analysis of the data obtained from “Monitoring of the financial behavior of the population” for 2009—2020 has demonstrated that the financial planning horizon of the majority of Russians does not exceed one year, about 50% of Russians have long-term financial goals, and about 30% have strategies to achieve them. A positive relationship has been revealed with a number of socio-demographic characteristics that fit into the logic of the life cycle: age, presence of children, higher education and income.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused people to immobilize to eat out, many industries are closed, the community’s economy is down, and many online food small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have sprung up. One of the areas affected by the COVID-19 pandemic is East Jakarta. The implementation of Sanitation Standard Operational Procedure (SSOP) in online food SMEs requires special attention during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to evaluate food production facilities in online food SMEs. Direct observation using instrument from Indonesian National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) Number HK.03.1.23.04.12.2207 2012 was conducted. The survey was conducted from May to June 2021 in five sub-districts in East Jakarta, namely Duren Sawit, Matraman, Pulo Gadung, Kampung Makassar, and Cipayung.  Of the 32 SMEs observed, 50% had been established in less than one year. Most of the SMEs owners have secondary and higher education education and sell popular Street food or food.  The survey covers non-compliance in 14 elements of food production facilities. The results show minor disobedience 18.8%, major disobedience 33.3%, serious defiance 25.8%, and critical disobedience 29.9%. In conclusion, major disobedience had the highest percentage, followed by critical, serious, and minor disobedience. Further education in the application of SSOP for online food SMEs should be carried out.

Ce travail expose les résultats d’une étude réalisée dans le but d’analyser la démarche d’apprentissage d’un groupe d’étudiants de premier cycle de géographie. Seront traitées ici les démarches d’apprentissage qu’ils adoptent et la façon dont évolue leur niveau de confiance en soi après un an d’enseignement supérieur. Les étudiants étaient confrontés à un programme visant au développement des capacités dans le cadre de la géographie, qui mettait l’accent sur une démarche d’apprentissage en profondeur. Les résultats montrent que, bien que leur niveau de confiance en leur capacité d’étudier et d’apprendre ait augmenté, leur démarche d’apprentissage est devenue de plus en plus instrumentale. This paper shows the results of a study carried out in order to analyse the learning approach in geography of cohorts of students on entry to a geography degree. After one year of higher education, student learning approaches and their degree of confidence are examined. A program aimed at the development of the learning capacities based on a deep learning approach was proposed to students. The results indicate that although their degrees of confidence in their capacity to study increased, their learning approaches became increasingly instrumental.

Abstract The paper focuses on translanguaging practices of highly skilled refugees in a transition program in Dutch higher education. The pathways for refugees to enter higher education are full of obstacles. Acquiring the new language at a university level is one of the biggest challenges. Many institutions offer ‘transition programs’ to prepare refugees for their studies. These are mostly focused on acquiring language skills and general basic skills in subjects such as Mathematics and Cultural Diversity. The Dutch transition program described in this paper was specifically developed to make use of students’ multilingual repertoires. The resource-oriented pedagogy of translanguaging is used to give space to all languages, leverage students’ resources and contribute to their academic and language development. In this research, data from one year of the Dutch transition program was collected to study a) how teachers engage in official translanguaging practices during instruction and b) to what extent teachers develop other practices to engage with their students’ multilingual repertoires. Results from interaction analysis show that the teachers, although mainly using the language of instruction (Dutch), did use a variety of translanguaging practices, and created other ways to encourage students’ multilingualism, such as engaging in language comparisons and raising language awareness.
