Abstract: Noni (Morinda cittrifolia L.) leaves contain antraquinon, atsiri oil, saponin, tannin, alkaloid, flavonoid, polifenol, and sterol that have been proved can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. This study was aimed to establish the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of noni leaf extract against Candida abicans. This was a true experimental study with a randomized pretest-posttest control group design. We used serial dilution method with turbidimetry and spectrophotometry tests. Noni leaves were extracted by using maceration with 96% ethanol. Candida albicans fungi were obtained from Microbiology Laboratory of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Sam Ratulangi University. The turbidimetry test using three repetitions showed that the MIC of noni leaf extract against Candida albicans was 6.25% meanwhile the spectrophotometry test established 12.5% as the MIC of noni leaf extract. Conclusion: Minimum inhibitory concentration of noni (Morinda cittrifolia L.) leaf extract against the growth of Candida albicans was 12.5%.Keywords: noni (Morinda citrifolia L.), Candida albicans, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) Abstrak: Daun mengkudu (Morinda citrifolia L.) mengandung antraquinon, minyak atsiri, saponin, tannin, alkaloid, flavonoid, polifenol dan sterol yang terbukti dapat menghambat pertumbuhan Candida albicans. An aqueous extract of Morinda citrifolia was shown to interfere with the serum-induced morphological conversion of Candida albicans from a cellular yeast to a filamentous form in vitro. The conversion of C. albicans from a cellular yeast to a filamentous form in vivo is associated with pathogenicity. No significant effect on growth in serum-free media was seen at the concentrations used to interfere with the morphological change. The same extract also inhibited the germination of Apergillus nidulans spores. These results demonstrate that M. citrifolia contains a water-soluble component or components that interfere with the morphological conversion of C. albicans and the germination of A. nidulans and may have potential therapeutic value with regard to candidiasis and aspergillosis.

Abstract: Candida albicans is a normal flora of the mouth, respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and the female genital but it becomes pathogen if there is a predisposing factor. Approximately 85-95% of oral candida infections are caused by C. albicans that is usually attached to the labial mucosa, buccal mucosa, the dorsal parts of the tongue and palate. Noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) is already known as a medical plant; one of it parts that has a medicinal effect is the leaf that contains anthraquinon as an antifungal. This study was aimed to determine the effect of noni leaf extract to the growth of C. albicans. This was a true experimental in vitro study with the post test only group design. The Kirby-Bauer method with filter paper was used to evaluate the sensitivity of C. albicans to mengkudu leaf extract. Leaves samples were extracted by using maceration process with ethanol 96%. C. albicans obtained from the pure stock of Laboratory of Microbiology Pharmacy Faculty of Math and Science, University of Sam Ratulangi. The results showed that the inhibition zone diameter of noni leaf extract on the growth of C. albicans was 16 mm (strong inhibition category). Conclusion: Noni leaf extract (Morinda citrifolia L.) had an inhibitory effect on Candida albicans. Keywords: Mengkudu leaf (Morinda citrifolia L.), Candida albicans, inhibition zone Abstrak: Candida albicans merupakan anggota flora normal rongga mulut, saluran pernafasan, saluran pencernaan, dan genital wanita namun dapat menjadi patogen jika terdapat faktor predisposisi.
