The coronavirus outbreak is a global public health emergency with high transmission among the population. Over 18 million people were affected globally (06th August 2020). In most of the cases, patients present flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, headaches and myalgias are commonly reported. Lockdown measures have been implemented to control the spread of the virus. In contrast, these measures have been reported to increase the probability of psychological and physical disorders. As the pandemic intensifies, the number of patients seeking dental emergency services due to acute symptoms (i.e. pulpitis, acute apical abscesses) has increased. There is an increasing need to investigate the association between psychological disorders and dental emergencies. There is critical need for the development of public policies for mental and dental health worldwide, leading to the improvement in the quality of life of the population.

Objective: Describe the demographic characteristics of the population attending the dental emergency services in health Center Juan Petrinovic, located in Santiago, Chile, and examine the effectiveness of dental treatment given to this population. Material and Methods: Before-after study, where 45 patients were surveyed twice, first, before their dental care and then in phone call follow-up. Patients completed interviewer-administered surveys that asked about patients’ self-reported pain level, oral health-related quality of life, and demographic information. Demographic information collected included age, sex, educational level, type of health insurance, and municipal district where patients lived. Self-reported pain level was measured using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and oral health quality of life was measured using the Dental Health Status Quality of Life Questionnaire (DS-QoL). Statistical descriptive analyses were performed, and statistical tests were applied to determine if the care given was effective on pain relief and increased quality of life status. Results: Most of the patients seeking care at the dental emergency service were female (67%), adults (average age 46 years), with high school education (58%), and FONASA health insurance (98%). The most common reason for using dental emergency services was pain (51%). Dental treatment given to the patients was effective in relieving pain (reduction in VAS score was 34.34 between pre and post attention) and improving their oral health status (reduction in DS-QoL score was 3.18 between pre and post attention). Conclusion: This dental emergency service was effective in reducing pain and improving the quality of life of the patient.

In the elderly and senile age, the need for medical care, including dental care, is increasing. The untimely appeal for dental care entails a change in the KPI index, as a result of which a partial or complete loss of teeth occurs. Complete absence of teeth is accompanied by morphofunctional changes of all elements of the dentoalveolar system, a significant decrease in chewing ability. Providing orthopedic dental care to the population of elderly, senile and old age is not easy due to the peculiarities of adaptation to removable dentures. In this study, the impact of removable dentures on the quality of life of a dental patient was assessed. The study involved 217 people aged 75 to 95 years. All patients needed removable prosthetics. Before the prosthetics, a questionnaire was conducted using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. The questionnaire showed the level of satisfaction with their dental health of the patients being examined. Then proceed to prosthetics. In the first group, the prosthesis was manufactured using a standard method. In the second group, the impression was removed using a modified individual spoon, which should improve adaptation to a removable denture. One month after the prosthesis, when all patients had complete adaptation to a removable denture, a second questionnaire was conducted using the OHIP-14 questionnaire. In order to reveal the dynamics of the quality of life of the patients being examined. The results showed the effectiveness of the proposed method. The number of patients with a good standard of living in group 2 increased by 58.8%, and in group 1 only by 34.5%. In group 2, adaptation to removable dentures was more rapid.

Gliomas make up about 8 cases per 100,000 population and the number of patients with this disease is only increasing. There can be not only various types of neurological deficits among the symptoms, but also personal and emotional changes, that seriously affects the quality of life. The modern model of health care includes not only recovery of the patient’s physical functions, but also his or her psychosocial well-being. In particular, the assessment and study of the characteristics of health-related quality of life, as well as cognitive functions in patients with gliomas, is increasingly recognized as an important criterion when considering the effectiveness of treatment. To date, the features of health related quality of life and cognitive functions of patients with epilepsy and acute cerebral circulation disorders have been studied sufficiently, and, as a result, techniques have been developed that accurately assess the QOL and CF in patients with these diseases. These are QOLIE-31 and QOLIE-AD-48 questionnaires for patients with epilepsy. This is the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Orgogozo stroke scale (OSS), World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) scale for the clinical assessment of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) for patients with acute cerebrovascular accident. At the same time, there are no generally accepted methods for assessing quality of life and neurocognitive functions that are sensitive to changes in the condition of patients with gliomas in the early postoperative period by the time of discharge from the hospital. As a result, there is no systematic information on the dynamics of the quality of life of such patients, their neurocognitive functioning. The purpose of this article was to study the literature on QOL and CF in patients affected by neurological and neurosurgical disorders for the further selection of optimal methods for assessing dynamics of the condition of patients with glial brain tumors before and after surgery. At the moment, such requirements are only partially met by the EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire and its application EORTC QLQ-BN20.

The article presents the results of a prospective controlled parallel clinical study of a new modification of laparoscopic antireflux surgery in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in combination with a hiatal hernia compared with laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in terms of assessing quality of life after surgery. Clinical and instrumental examination of patients was carried out a year after surgical interventions. In accordance with the results of instrumental examination after surgery, the proposed modification of laparoscopic partial fundoplication is not inferior to laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication both, in terms of relief of reflux esophagitis symptoms and in relation to the recurrence of hiatal hernia. Clinical monitoring indicates a significantly higher quality of life for patients after the modified antireflux surgery, which is associated with a number of factors. The implementation of this fundoplication led to a decrease in the number of patients with complaints of dysphagia, the development of which is directly related to the surgery performance, as well as to a statistically significant reduction of bloating in the upper abdomen. Another advantage of the modified surgery is a significantly smaller number of cases of gas-bloat syndrome. In addition, the disorders developing in the framework of the gas bloat syndrome after laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication are more severe.

Abstract Purpose The physical and mental wellbeing of an individual is impacted by the type occupation one does. This study aims to establish the prevalence of mental and physical disorders, the association of occupational groups and health-related quality of life, and the extent of work-loss and work-cut back in past 30 days among the employed in the Singapore resident population. Methods Data from a population-based, epidemiological survey of a representative sample of Singapore citizens and permanent residents aged 18 years and above were used. Lifetime diagnosis of select mental disorders was established using the World Health Organization’s Composite International Diagnostic Interview version 3.0 (WHO-CIDI 3.0). Data on nicotine dependence, work productivity, quality of life and socio-demographics were obtained via self-report. Ten major occupational groups based on the Singapore Standard Occupational Classification were included in the analysis. Results The sample comprised 4021 employed individuals who were predominantly males (54.7%) and aged 35–49 years (35.4%). ‘Service and sales workers’ (22.6%), ‘Professionals’ (17.3%) and ‘Legislators, senior officials and managers’ (16.4%) were the three largest occupational groups. Socio-demographic characteristics differed significantly (p < 0.001) across all occupational groups. Lifetime prevalence of mood disorders among the employed was 8.4% and the most prevalent physical disorder was chronic pain (18.9%). No significant differences were observed in work productivity loss across the occupational groups. Conclusions The disparities in the socio-demographic characteristics and prevalence of mental and physical disorders across occupational categories provide policymakers with vital information to pilot effective interventions that can improve the psychosocial and physical conditions at work.
