Microfinance plays a key role in poverty alleviation, employment generation, mitigating rural urban migration, utilization of local resources and raw materials and contributing to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Nigeria. Women, majority of who are poor and engaged in informal micro, small and medium scale businesses are mostly the target of microfinance institutions. However, women entrepreneurs find it difficult to have access to the products and services of the conventional banks due to their stringent lending requirement. The presence of Islamic banking which promotes the profit and loss sharing (PLS) concept increases the awareness among women entrepreneurs to alternative funding sources. Despite availability of financing options, women entrepreneurs are constrained by their reluctance to use interest based microfinance services. This paper aims to provide a proposed framework that examines the impact of Islamic investment and financing contracts (Murabaha financing and Mudharabah savings) and other microfinance related factors (training, social capital and self-esteem) on women entrepreneurs business performance. Religiosity is a new moderating variable within the framework that is hypothesized to enhance business performance of women entrepreneurs. The proposed framework will fill the gap in Islamic banking and finance studies since the area of Islamic microfinance and the moderating effect of religiosity has not been empirically investigated.

The objective of this chapter is to highlight the important relationship between microfinance institutions and women entrepreneurs in new venture creation. This chapter is proposed because women-empowerment is one of the crucial issues worldwide. In certain parts of the world, women are bound to customs, norms, beliefs, which are unique. These issues are found to promote social problems and hinder the economic contribution from women. In this direction, microfinance institutions are playing a vital role to promote women-empowerment through providing various opportunities to create new ventures. New venture creation increases the women social and economic empowerment through income generation. Various microfinance factors such as micro-credit, micro-saving, micro-insurance, and micro-training/skill development have a significant positive contribution to create new ventures. Finally, this chapter could be beneficial for microfinance institutes, state bank and government in making the strategies to enhance women-empowerment through new venture creation.

Generally, women, entrepreneurs face problems in accessing funding due to factors that stem from cultural values, ??societal needs, family ties, illiteracy, gender discrimination, strict government policies, economic crisis, and the lack of training in entrepreneurship and skills acquisition that hinders entrepreneurial activities. This study was conducted to examine the impact of microfinance bank services in empowering female entrepreneurship in Irbid Governorate. The study used a cross-sectional survey research design consisting of 20,000 registered businesswomen. A total of 392 working women were selected using stratified sampling technique and the data was analysed using Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) with the help of SmartPLS3 software. The results showed that microfinance loans, microfinance savings, and financial interventions or donations had a significant, positive impact on empowering women's businesses in Irbid, Jordan. The study concluded that microfinance deposits could elevate women’s income and act as a guarantee to obtain loans and other microfinance services. Consequently, microfinance institutions (MFIs) should empower more women-owned businesses. In addition, the government through the Central Bank of Jordan should reduce the interest rate of microfinance banks to attract more female entrepreneurs and create more microfinance bank plans and financial intervention packages to enhance financial services to ensure donations and funds reach women entrepreneurs.

This study mirrored out the effects of Microfinance on economic empowerment of Women Entrepreneurs in developing economies. Descriptive research design was used to assess the extent to which Women economic empowerment co-relates with Microfinance Institutions services. The target population was women entrepreneurs in Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) within Kakamega C.B.D. Simple random probability sampling was applied to select ten (10) MFIs where four (4) active women entrepreneurs from each MFI was taken, adding to forty (40) respondents. Both primary and secondary data was collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data collected was presented by descriptive statistics like pie charts and graphs. From the analysis, the results showed that microfinance services act as a key fulcrum to women entrepreneurs’ economic empowerment. The results were re-affirmed by a linear regression analysis (SPSS version 22). The findings will be used to make policy proposals that will see MFIs meet the economic empowerment needs of women Entrepreneurs to make developing countries progress as Kenya prepares to achieve vision 2030.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on micro-businesses owned by women borrowers of microfinance institutions and to provide policy suggestions to assist women entrepreneurs in managing such an unexpected crisis from a qualitative perspective within developing countries such as Pakistan. Design/methodology/approach The study adopts a qualitative research design to explore the impact of COVID-19 on women’s entrepreneurial activities. Seven women entrepreneurs were selected and semi-structured interviews with focused group discussion under case study research design are used. Thereby providing a contemporary view of the issues faced by women entrepreneurs in the period of huge social and economic upheaval. Findings The results provide valuable insights about how the COVID-19 crisis affected women entrepreneurs by particularly considering household income, business sales, lifestyle and mental health. The liquidation of women-led businesses indicated the necessity to reconsider creativity and digitalization for business survival. Moreover, the results also revealed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the physical, mental and economic well-being of women highlights the need for considering gender gap issues in forming response policies for COVID-19 in developing countries. Originality/value As the COVID-19 crisis is a recent and existing phenomenon, this study is among the first to explore particularly the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on micro-enterprises mainly owned and managed by women. Thereby claiming that COVID-19 not only physically but also psychologically affected women entrepreneurs. Moreover, the study highlights a need of skill focused training programs for women entrepreneurs to make sure that they can protect their businesses during such difficult times.

The main purpose of this study was to determine the effects of microfinance services on women owned enterprises in Busia County. The study specific objectives included, to establish the effects of credit on performance of women owned business enterprises in Busia County, determine the effects of financial training on the performance of women owned enterprises in Busia County, examination of the effects of savings on performance of women owned business enterprises ,conceptualization of the effects of social capital on the performance of women owned business enterprises and examine the effects of legal framework on the inclusive business enterprises performance of women owned enterprises in Busia County. The study was guided mainly by the resource - based view theory and institutional theory, among others. The study adopted a descriptive survey research designs while study target population was 500 women owned entrepreneurs in Busia County, Kenya. Stratified random sampling technique was used and the sample size constituted 20% of the total target population thus making a simple size of 100 respondents for this study. The respondents were purposively selected women entrepreneurs, customers of the specific selected microfinance institutions found within Busia county business ecosystem. The questionnaires were used as a tool for primary data collection respectively, both qualitative and quantitative data analysis methodologies were applied by use of spss version 23.0.The study findings revealed that, an increase in credit, finance training, social capital, savings and legal framework by one unit leads to an increase in performance by 0.502, 0.124, 0.081, 0.236, and 0.059 units respectively with a p –value of < 0.05 for each variable. Based on the study findings the researcher can conclude that, women owned enterprises are key drivers to the economic development in Kenya and the study recommends that training program should be emphasized to enhance the financial literacy management for exemplary performance of the enterprises. Savings, social capital, financial training, legal framework and credit services significantly influences performances of women-owned business enterprises. According to the research findings, the frequency of trainings should be increased to keep them abreast with modern methodologies for better performance and financial training programs for women owned business enterprises should be designed to meet the standards needs for women entrepreneurs’ and more so the aspiring new entrants.

Women owned enterprises have limited access to capital as traditional banks shy away from them due to the high risk associated with lending to SMEs. Hence, several Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) sprung up with the aim of providing credit to SMEs especially women entrepreneurs. In this paper, the effect of microcredit from these MFIs on profitability of women owned SMEs is examined with data from 199 women entrepreneurs in the Tamale Metropolis of Ghana. The enterprises were randomly selected from five Microfinance Institutions and categorized based on their economic activities using stratified sampling. Semi structured interview checklist was used to survey the women owned SMEs whilst questionnaires were administered to the Microfinance Institutions. A paired sample t-test was employed to determine the changes in Gross Profit over time after which effect of size was also determined. The results indicate a significant increase in the average monthly gross profit over time.

The International Labour Organization in Beirut has been running a project in the Palestinian Camps of Nahr El Bared and Ein El Helweh entitled “Palestinian Women Economic Empowerment Initiative”. The project started in 2011 and targets lowincome Palestinian women entrepreneurs through a threefold strategy: giving out loans and grants to women business groups in order to expand their businesses; training women entrepreneurs to enhance their business skills; and building the capacity of support organizations in order to improve business development services for women entrepreneurs and training them to be formally certified to deliver business group formation training. The project builds on the potential of business groups in assuring the protection of Palestinian women entrepreneurs from risks through resilience, pooling of resources, and collective voice. The objectives are to assure a sustainable livelihood for Palestinian women entrepreneurs through supporting them in expanding their businesses beyond survivalist low-income activities
