Experience of application of neutron shooting in the complex with geoelectrochemical methods on reference tybes of the Zimmeberezhny diamondiferous area

The method of registration of free neutrons applied in a complex with geoelectrochemical methods is for the first time tested in the Arkhangelsk diamondiferous province. The basis on its application is the concept developed now about formation of diamonds in the deep center, screened dense breeds. As a result density of energy of the excited environment increases that leads to course of nuclear dissociation of nuclear kernels, cluster radioactive decay and a low-energy transmutation of elements. At formation of a kimberlite tube in the course of cluster radioactive decay and a low-energy transmutation of nuclear kernels there is an electromagnetic radiation with energy of quantum about tens and hundreds kiloelectronvolt. By results of the carried-out skilled and methodical works on the reference blocked tubes Pioneer and Verkhnetovsky confirmation of this concept is received and the search technique leaning on this geological model is offered.

Abstract. Radium-228 (228Ra), an almost conservative trace isotope in the ocean, supplied from the continental shelves and removed by a known radioactive decay (T1∕2 = 5. 75 years), can be used as a proxy to constrain shelf fluxes of other trace elements, such as nutrients, iron, or rare earth elements. In this study, we perform inverse modeling of a global 228Ra dataset (including GEOSECS, TTO and GEOTRACES programs, and, for the first time, data from the Arctic and around the Kerguelen Islands) to compute the total 228Ra fluxes toward the ocean, using the ocean circulation obtained from the NEMO 3.6 model with a 2° resolution. We optimized the inverse calculation (source regions, cost function) and find a global estimate of the 228Ra fluxes of 8.01–8. 49 × 1023 atoms yr−1, more precise and around 20 % lower than previous estimates. The largest fluxes are in the western North Atlantic, the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean, with roughly two-thirds in the Indo-Pacific Basin. An estimate in the Arctic Ocean is provided for the first time (0.43–0.50  ×  1023 atoms yr−1). Local misfits between model and data in the Arctic, the Gulf Stream and the Kuroshio regions could result from flaws of the ocean circulation in these regions (resolution, atmospheric forcing). As radium is enriched in groundwater, a large part of the 228Ra shelf sources comes from submarine groundwater discharge (SGD), a major but poorly known pathway for terrestrial mineral elements, including nutrients, to the ocean. In contrast to the 228Ra budget, the global estimate of SGD is rather unconstrained, between 1.3 and 14. 7 × 1013 m3 yr−1, due to high uncertainties on the other sources of 228Ra, especially diffusion from continental shelf sediments. Better precision on SGD cannot be reached by inverse modeling until a proper way to separate the contributions of SGD and diffusive release from sediments at a global scale is found.

Recently, long-lived high spin super- and hyperdeformed isomeric states with unusual radioactive decay properties have been discovered. Based on these newly observed modes of radioactive decay, consistent interpretations are suggested for previously unexplained phenomena seen in nature. These are the Po halos, the low-energy enhanced 4.5 MeV α-particle group proposed to be due to an isotope of a superheavy element with Z=108, and the giant halos.

We report the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) between 15 GeV and 75 GeV. This is the first time a middle-aged pulsar has been detected up to these energies. Observations were carried out with the MAGIC telescopes between 2017 and 2019 using the low-energy threshold Sum-Trigger-II system. After quality selection cuts, ∼80 h of observational data were used for this analysis. To compare with the emission at lower energies below the sensitivity range of MAGIC, 11 years of Fermi-LAT data above 100 MeV were also analysed. From the two pulses per rotation seen by Fermi-LAT, only the second one, P2, is detected in the MAGIC energy range, with a significance of 6.3σ. The spectrum measured by MAGIC is well-represented by a simple power law of spectral index Γ = 5.62 ± 0.54, which smoothly extends the Fermi-LAT spectrum. A joint fit to MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data rules out the existence of a sub-exponential cut-off in the combined energy range at the 3.6σ significance level. The power-law tail emission detected by MAGIC is interpreted as the transition from curvature radiation to Inverse Compton Scattering of particles accelerated in the northern outer gap.

Did Alex Arnold kill Betty Gail Brown? I have been asked that question hundreds of times and have never found it easy to answer. My difficulty with the question began almost as soon as I saw Arnold for the first time, in a jail cell in Lexington two or three days after he had confessed to the killing and been charged with murder. Although Arnold was not at the time hallucinating about mind-reading machines or talking to creatures on the walls of his jail cell, he was quite obviously still suffering mental impairments. He had lost his access to alcohol a little more than a week earlier and had been sitting alone in jail for most of that period; he seemed to have passed through the worst of his withdrawal symptoms, but was not even close to a total escape from the consequences of at least ten years of drunkenness. He had lost the “good feelings” he gained from drinking (elevated mood, self-confidence, and nonexistent inhibitions) and had found in their place high anxiety, low energy, some disorientation, and a crystal-clear desire to be left alone. It was under these conditions, speaking very softly and seeming almost to be talking to himself, that he said, “I killed her.” Had he made this statement under normal circumstances, in a clean and clear state of mind, it would have been easy to believe that the state had found the killer of Betty Gail Brown. But the circumstances under which the statement was made were far from normal, although they were much closer to normal that those that prevailed a few days earlier when he signed the confession that led to his prosecution for murder....

In Jurinea mollis fruit, the dibenzylbutyrolactone-type lignan glycoside arctiin and its aglycone arctigenin were determined for the first time using a combination of optimized enzymatic treatment and complementary spectrometric (HPLC-MS, GC-MS) and spectroscopic (CD and NMR) methods. Analysis of separated fruit parts, i.e., the fruit wall and embryo, demonstrated the specific accumulation of arctiin, since it was exclusively found in the embryo. Arctiin in the embryo samples (71.5 mg/g) was found to be quantitatively converted into arctigenin (50.7 mg/g) by endogenous enzymatic hydrolysis, resulting in one of the highest arctigenin-containing plant tissues reported to date and allowing the selective isolation of arctigenin by our recently reported three-step isolation method. The absolute configuration of the isolated arctigenin was determined to be (-)-(8 R,8′ R). Conformational analysis of arctigenin was also performed, resulting in three major low energy conformations.

The excitation functions of 51V [(α, xn), x = 1.3; (α, p3n); (α, α3n) (α, 2α)] and 59Co[(α, 2n); (α, αxn); x = 1, 2] reactions were measured up to 50 MeV by the stacked-foil activation technique and high-resolution Ce(Li)–HPGe spectroscopy method. Of these 51V(α, xnypzα) reactions were studied for the first time with better accuracy than earlier measurements, which were done with a poor resolution scintillation–Ge(Li) detectors some 20 years ago. In the case of 59Co, existing data show large discrepancies at low energy. Comparisons are presented with the prediction of hybrid and exciton models. While for the (α, xn) type of reactions, reasonably explainable pre-equilibrium contributions are found, there seem to be indications of direct inelastic scattering effects in the (α, αxn) type of reactions.

The lifetimes and energies associated with low-energy gamma transitions from the 93Nb(n,γ)94Nb, 107Ag(n,γ)108Ag, and 109Ag(n,γ)110Ag reactions have been studied using a high-resolution Ge(Li) X-ray spectrometer. New weak transitions are observed in the decay of 110Ag at 30.84, 38.19, 41.78, and 136.65 keV, while intense gamma transitions at 105.6, 235.8, and 266.95 keV are resolved into doublets. The half-life of the state involving the intense 117.47 keV transition in 110Ag and the 215 keV transition in 108Ag is confirmed as 36.5 ± 2.0 ns and 54 ± 8 ns, respectively, while a new delayed state associated with the gamma transition of 99.404 keV (T1/2 = 30 ± 5 ns) in 94Nb is observed for the first time. The upper limits for the half-lives involving most of the intense transitions in all the three isotopes are also reported. A level scheme is proposed and discussed for 108Ag.

<p>A ferromagnetic material in the absence of an external magnetic field shows the peak of its specific heat in low temperature, called the Schottky anomaly, which is vital in understanding the low-energy structure of a given material. A general formula for the low-temperature behavior of the specific heat of an N-spin ferromagnetic material in an external magnetic field (the generalized Schottky anomaly) is obtained for the first time. Also, as a representative example of ferromagnetic materials in an external magnetic field, the low-temperature behavior of the specific heat for the Ising ferromagnet is studied.</p>
