International Student Competition on Font and Calligraphy Pangram: Origins, Development, Prospects

The article analyzes the experience of holding the Pangram International Student Competition on Font and Calligraphy in the context of the phenomenon of festivals and competitions that popularize the art of type in the cultural space of Ukraine and the world. The purpose of the article is a retrospective review of the five year existence of the competition, its statistical analysis, results and prospects. This study was carried out in the framework of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of KSADA. Its idea is related to the determination of one of the directions of the Academy’s development in the future. The field of international creative competitions is diverse and constantly evolving. The most famous professional type design competitions are Morisawa Type Design Competition, TDC Typeface Design Competition, GRANSHAN Type Design Competition, where designers present their latest developments in type design. The article dwells on the problem of the implementation of creative ideas of art university students through participation in competitions, creative actions, festivals. It was noted that the practice of announcing such competitions is an example of encouraging young people to be creative, and it is an opportunity to find talented labor potential for organizations. The author examines the features of the main type festivals held in Ukraine in different years, namely: Cyrillic Holiday, Ruthenia, Space of Letters. The state of the research of the problem is analyzed. The author emphasizes that the phenomenon of creative actions, festivals and competitions is insufficiently studied in scientific terms. Although they are widely highlighted by local and regional Internet media as significant events, which demonstrates the interest of society. Special attention is payed to the background, development and transformation of the Pangram competition. The main idea of the competition is to give the opportunity to demonstrate the font ideas of students of art higher education institutions from different countries. The competition also promotes the exchange of experience of font schools in Ukraine and other countries, popularizes the role of calligraphy, type and typography disciplines in higher education institutions. The author highlights such conditions and mechanisms of the competition as topics, nominations and categories, event format, the jury and evaluation criteria, partners, and awards. It was noted that the selected remote format proved to be successful in the global pandemic. At the present stage of the development of the art of font and calligraphy in general and in Ukraine in particular, the student competition is a progressive phenomenon of bringing teaching methods beyond the walls of higher education institutions. The present study is important for understanding the trends in modern type design and calligraphy in terms of the formation of Ukrainian identity and the design culture in general.

Purpose This study was designed to address the problem of how higher education institutions, as organizations designed to promote learning, responded to the COVID pandemic and the suspension of in-person instruction. The purpose of this paper was specifically to explore how institutions go about learning from the pandemic to better prepare themselves for the future that they will face. Design/methodology/approach A researcher-developed survey instrument was distributed electronically to 300 faculty leaders at randomly selected universities in the USA. With three follow-up e-mail requests, the survey had a 31% usable response rate. Findings Survey results indicated that institutional leadership did not make strong use of shared governance in responding to the COVID pandemic in creating operational response strategies. Further, institutions did not alter their policies or make structural changes to be more adept in facing the challenges of a global pandemic and its impact on the financial well-being of the institutions. Although institutions did make changes to their attitudes about students, these were not developmental changes but rather behavioral modification expectations. Originality/value This study drew upon data collected after the first three months of the global COVID pandemic, providing an important first-look at organizational behavior in response to a largely unplanned global event.

The prevailing picture of intercultural adaptation among international student sojourners features a reified process of overcoming culture shock or culture-related stress and anxiety. In the context of increasing recruitment of Chinese students by German higher education institutions, there has been a growing interest in understanding Chinese students' intercultural adaptation experiences, and in exploring approaches that can be adopted by Chinese and German higher education to support these sojourners' learning experience. Drawing on a six-month mixed-methods study of 84 Chinese students attending German universities, researchers explored their intercultural experience regarding psychological, sociocultural, and educational aspects to university life. The challenges faced by these students are discussed in terms of psychological, sociocultural, and educational adaptations.

The global pandemic of the virus COVID-19 dramatically has impacted Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Bosnia and Herzegovina and worldwide. HEIs were forced to switch overnight to online lectures and exams without almost any teachers' and students' preparation and education. After one year of online classes at the University of Mostar (SUM), whether that kind of teaching impacts creativity. In order to find the answer to the research question, the authors used a questionnaire they developed and applied in 2015 to investigate students' perceptions about creativity at the University of Mostar. The research presented in this paper is limited to SUM students who have had online classes since March 2020. The primary research goal is to investigate whether there are any significant changes in students' perceptions of creativity compared to research from 2015. Namely, the authors investigate whether the enhanced use of IT and online platforms (Google Meet, SUMARUM – the University of Mostar’s variant of Moodle) affected students' creativity. Global higher education institutions are significantly impacted by a key component of chaos during challenging times: the ability to effectively respond to ambiguity and uncertainty. Today’s COVID-19 global pandemic created a challenge so quickly that higher education leaders had little opportunity to assess, evaluate and make informed judgments. The dynamics of the situation presented more complexities than ever previously faced. Global higher education institutions with the ability to manage ambiguity and uncertainty can successfully survive. Conversely, the inability to cope with change could lead to failure.

Choosing a university is a crucial decision in a person's life because, most of the time, the acquisition of a university degree allows him access to better working conditions. Universities are interested in knowing the factors that students cite as impacting their choice of university. This study aims to classify future university students according to different evaluation criteria that could help university administrators to improve their recruitment and positioning strategies. Building on the growing body of knowledge related to the marketing of Higher Education Institutions, the current study seeks to further explore the existence of segments featuring different selection patterns. The main goal of this study was tested by applying Latent Class Analysis as a segmentation method, also referred to as Latent Class Cluster Analysis. This study found that students have different sets of motivations for their choice of Higher Education Institutions, and also found significant differences in the motivations of males and females with regard to university selection. All of these findings are of great importance to the managers of university brands, particularly at the university under study.

This article is based on a keynote address at the 2021 American Kinesiology Association’s Annual Leadership Workshop, for which I was asked to talk about the future of work in connection to higher education. I am familiar with the kinesiology field in my role as Dean of the School of Professional Advancement at Tulane University. This article touches on issues important to the field of kinesiology that may also be applied across other academic disciplines. Technology is changing the nature of work; the global pandemic has sped up the pace of that change. Beyond this, the potential for future pandemics and other transformational events and trends mean that work is in a state of permanent flux. Preparing students for future success in this environment requires educators to think more broadly and holistically about their roles. Higher education institutions also, arguably, have a responsibility not just to educate, but to model workplace culture.

This chapter discusses the role of accessibility in higher education institutions during the COVID-19 global pandemic. Under the law, administrators in higher education are obligated to provide accessible programs and services to students. They are also required to provide accessible work environments for employees. Administrators also have other incentives for doing so, such as building a sense of community. As a result of the shift to hybrid and or totally virtual delivery models of instruction, institutional administrators need a research-based methodology to assess their programs and services for accessibility consideration. This chapter provides higher education administrators with such a methodology. It also makes recommendations for creating return to campus plans, including how universal design can be implemented as part of the plan.
