Fictive Mode, ‘Journey to the West’, and Transformation of Space: ‘Ali Mubarak’s Discourses of Modernization

I begin my exploration of ‘Ali Mubarak (1823/4–1893) and the discourses on modernization ‘performed’ in his only attempt at fiction, ‘Alam al-Din (The Sign of Religion, 1882), with a quote from Guy Davenport because it elegantly sums up a key theoretical principle underpinning any discussion of cultural transformation and, more particularly, of modernization. Locating ‘Ali Mubarak and his only fictional work at the juncture of the transformation from the ‘traditional’ to the ‘modern’ in the recent history of Arab culture and of Arabic narrative, I find Davenport's pronouncement tantalizingly appropriate. He not only places the stakes of history and geography in one another, but simultaneously opens up the imagination to the combined forces of time and space that stand behind these two distinct yet related disciplines.

To the student of the recent history of theological ideas in the West, it sometimes seems as though, of all the ‘new’ subjects that have been intro duced into theological discussion during the last hundred or so years, only two have proved to be of permanent significance. One is, of course, biblical criticism, and the other, the subject which in my University is still called ‘comparative religion’—the (as far as possible) dispassionate study of the religions of the world as phenomena in their own right.

In the garden of the world. Italy to a young 19th century Chinese traveler. On September 14th, 1859, at the first light of dawn, a young Chinese traveler named Guo Liancheng 郭連城 (1839-1866) landed in Civitavecchia, Italy, after a long journey of overland travel and months of navigation. Coming from a small village far from the capital, he was only 20 years old and was in the company of an Italian priest, Luigi Celestino Spelta. Guo was not the first Chinese man to visit Europe but before leaving, he decided to keep a daily journal of his experience, published soon after his return with the title of Xiyou bilüe西游筆略 (Brief Account of the Journey to the West). This book presents for the first time the story of Guo Liancheng, exploring a still little-known aspect of the history of the contacts between Italy and China. Following the pages of Guo Liancheng’s journal, the author tries to shed light on its contents and features and to analyze the image of Italy described in the pages of Brief account of the Journey to the West, the earliest firsthand account on the Bel Paese ever published in China.

This chapter engages with several major themes that have long animated research on the West German 1960s: protesters’ family backgrounds and wartime childhoods; the meaning of the Nazi past to their activism; and intergenerational relations. Like their student peers on the Left, centre-right activists had been raised in a post-genocidal society. Given that, how did they view and engage with Germany’s recent history of mass violence? The chapter highlights the centrality of anti-totalitarianism to their thinking. It also shows that, inspired by the so-called ‘‘45ers’ and nudged by social scientists who routinely portrayed student protest as a symptom of generational conflict, they began to think of themselves as a distinct generational community in the 1960s.

Nobody who has worked in the field of late Republican and early Imperial Rome can fail to be aware how remarkably little archaeological evidence we have of any specifically Roman presence in the provinces of which Rome was in political and military control during the last century of the Republic. In the east, where she was faced with a civilization older and richer than her own, this is intelligible enough. But for the student of the spread of Roman institutions and ideas in the west the gap is embarrassing. In Roman Britain we have no difficulty whatever in identifying the Gallic precedents for the settlement that followed the Roman conquest. But what lay behind the Caesarian and Augustan settlement in Gaul itself? In terms of the recent history of the area it would be reasonable to expect that in the south, at any rate, it should have been rooted in local Republican Roman practice; and yet there is remarkably little evidence of any such roots in the surviving remains. Much the same is true of Spain and Africa. Why is this? Is it that the impact of the early Imperial settlement was so strong that it swept away all trace of what had gone before? Or is it simply that the Republican Roman presence in these territories was not of a character to leave any substantial mark on the archaeological record?

The recent history of the intense relationship between philosophy and poetry has concentrated on the poiesis of poetic language. Poiesis is the truth-revealing nature of poetic materiality and linguistic singularity. The ‘truth’ it reveals is that truth itself, as expressed by philosophy, is under erasure in a manner that cannot be expressed philosophically, and so must instead be performed poetically. At the same time, however, what has been neglected is the manner by which material poiesis, for example lineation, is located within a wider poetic structure. If a poem disrupts what Badiou calls dianoia, at the local or linear level, it constructs meanings at the ‘global’ level in the form of its structure. So that while poems may be gifted with truth-revealing poiesis, they are also dominated by truth-developing structures. So far a philosophical interaction with these structures is lacking. This article will consider the philosophical nature of a poem's structure as a means of generating local and global poetic meanings through a development of what will be called poetry's tabularity. Using Shelley's ‘Ode to the West Wind’, it will consider the work of Agamben, Badiou, and Husserl in relation to how meaning is generated across the poetic, two-dimensional, or tabular field.

Zhang Guangyu’s illustrated taleJourney to the West in Cartoons(1945) has been described as a colorful, whimsical, but also trenchant lampoon of bankrupt politics and society under Nationalist rule at the close of the War of Resistance against Japan.Journeyis indeed a masterful example of satire, but it is also a remarkable work ofmanhua, a genre of verbal-visual art often referred to as “cartoon” that flourished in China’s treaty ports in the first half of the twentieth century. This chapter proposes that when viewed in conversation with the history of China’smanhua, Zhang’s fanciful allegory describes a symbiosis betweenmanhuaand the popular print genre of the pictorial magazine, the medium in whichmanhuathrived during the interwar years.

<strong>Abstract</strong><br />This is article about a book of Art history. The book aims have been exploratory rather than critical. The authors, Hugh Honour and John Fleming (1984),  referred exposition to interpretation and evaluation, so far as they are separable. The appeal of some works of art in this book is never purely visual, it is<br />just simply to delight our eyes. It is heavy burden to bear in mind that these conceptions are peculiar to the West perspective. It try to vast a large horizon in both time and space, attention on historically prominent periods and areas,<br />which are also those of most basic interest. Chapters are arranged chronogically, across a wide geographical panorama in order to allow crucial events in world history of humankind. This article also focus to history of photography, that was closely allied with both painting and print making, since of its invention in the 1830s. At last, history of art inevitably reflect the feelings and minds of their authors, who have been almost as diverse as the artists about whom they write, as diverse and many-sided as the works of art themselves.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Abstrak</strong><br />Tulisan ini adalah bedah buku tentang sejarah seni. Tujuan buku adalah melakukan penjelajahan daripada bacaan kritis. Penyusunnya, Hugh Honour dan John Fleming, memilih penjelasan terperinci dan sarat penilaian, yang sesungguhnya keduanya dapat terpisah. Karya-karya seni yang ditampilkan pada buku penuh visual, bermaksud untuk menyenangkan amatan pembaca. Beban besar dipikul buku ini, terkait<br />sudut pandang Barat yang rumit. Cakrawala luas ruang dan waktu dibentangkan luas pada buku ini. Penyusunan bab dibuat secara kronologis, merentang panorama geografis teramat lebar dalam rangka menjelaskan peristiwa-peristiwa penting sejarah umat manusia. The article is devoted to the problem of studying the history of feminism in China – from the activities of Christian missionaries to Chinese revolutionaries. The prerequisites and stages of the formation of the women's movement for their rights are considered on the example of the book “The Journey to the West” of a Chinese Woman or Feminism in China by Elvira A. Sinetskaya. This book actually presents the first for Russian science study of development of Chinese movement for women rights, as well as constitutes a try to describe its characteristic feature and to place it in the context of world feminism. The author begins from definition such core terms as “feminism”, “gender”, etc., and then considers the history of feminism beginning in China and possible causes of its appearance. She analyses an attitude to women in traditional Chinese society through the lens of family relationship, society and religion, which is viewed from historical perspective. The study is based on variety of sources, including fiction literature. E.A. Sinetskaya connects the first attempts of Chinese women to obtain equality of rights with spread of Cristianity, but in this paper another point of view on this problem is presented. Then Taoism gave equal rights and possibilities for its progeny regardless of sex and social status. In this religion one can find pantheon of female goddesses, etc. The issues of family and marriage, the right to education, the right to independent earnings and problems with the exercise of their rights by women are being raised in the article, it highlights the connection between the Chinese women’s movement and the problem of human freedom

A leading figure in the field of modern Chinese philosophy, Fung Yu-lan (Feng Yu-lan) has lived and worked amidst the intellectual and political tensions which have characterised the recent history of his country. His major work, Chung-kuo Che-hsueh Shih (History of Chinese Philosophy), was published in the 1930s, and is known in the West through the monumental translation into English prepared by Professor Derk Bodde of the University of Pennsylvania. Fung's technical philosophical theories were defined and articulated in his wartime writings during the 1940s. Like many of the leading Chinese intellectuals, he has now embraced Marxism-Leninism, the new orthodoxy which provides the doctrinal creed for contemporary China even as Confucianism did for the scholar-officials of the imperial period.
