Healthy nutrition is the most important component of the quality of life of the population. Disorders of the nutritional structure lead to the development of alimentary-dependent diseases, including cardiovascular, oncological, diabetes mellitus, obesity, osteoporosis, etc., that are the main causes of premature mortality of the population of economically developed countries, including Russia. This is due, among other things, to the low level of knowledge of the population about the principles of healthy nutrition. In order to eliminate the existing gap in the competence of the population on healthy nutrition, the Centre for Hygienic education of the population of the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, Moscow, as a part of the implementation of the federal project ‘Formation of a system of motivation of citizens to a healthy lifestyle, including healthy nutrition and rejection of bad habits' (‘Strengthening the Public Health'), which is a part of the national project ‘Demography', conducts systematic activities aimed at creating and maintaining an information and educational environment.

Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the level of knowledge and awareness about metabolic syndrome (Met S) and its components among the 1st year physiotherapy students and also the difference in the level of knowledge and awareness among male and female students. Methods: A self-administered structured questionnaire consisting of 90 questions about components of Met S was distributed among 38 students studying 1st year physiotherapy at Apollo College of Physiotherapy, Hyderabad, after obtaining a written consent from them. The data extracted were tabulated, statistically analyzed and results were obtained. Results: Physiotherapy students have good knowledge about types and causes of diabetes and poor knowledge about symptoms, biochemical process, and complications of Met S. They expressed poor knowledge to understand the link between hypertension and pregnancy. They could understand the role of hereditary factors only in diabetes but not in other components. Conclusion: Met S is a common disorder in the society; therefore, the awareness should be raised among the student population and as paramedics, it is their responsibility to communicate with the public about the risk factors and complications associated with it and counsel them to adopt a healthy lifestyle to protect themselves from the complications.

BACKGROUND The rising incidence of chronic diseases is a growing concern, especially in Singapore with amongst the highest prevalence of diabetes in developed countries. Interventions promoting healthy lifestyle changes have been proven effective in reducing the progression of prediabetes to diabetes, but their in-person delivery may not be feasible at a large scale. Novel technologies such as conversational agents are a potential alternative for delivery of behavioural interventions towards healthy lifestyle change for the public. OBJECTIVE To assess the feasibility and acceptability of using a conversational agent promoting healthy lifestyle changes in the general population in Singapore. METHODS We performed an online, single-arm feasibility study. Participants were recruited via Facebook over four weeks. The Facebook Messenger conversational agent was used to deliver the intervention. The conversations focused on diet, exercise, sleep and stress and aimed to promote healthy lifestyle changes and improve participants’ knowledge of diabetes. Messages were sent to participants four times a week (once for each of the four topics of focus) for four weeks. We assessed feasibility of recruitment, defined as at least 75% of our target sample of 200 participants in four weeks, as well as retention, defined as 33% of the recruited sample completing the study. We also assessed participants’ satisfaction with and usability of the conversational agent. We also performed baseline and follow-up assessments of quality of life (QoL), diabetes knowledge and risk perception, diet, exercise, sleep and stress. RESULTS We recruited 37.5% (75/200) of the target sample size in one month. Of the eligible participants, 60 provided digital informed consent and completed baseline assessments whilst 56 followed the study through till completion. Retention was high, at 93% (56/60), along with engagement, denoted by 50% of participants communicating with the conversational agent at each interaction. Acceptability, usability, and satisfaction were generally high. Preliminary efficacy of the intervention showed no definitive improvements in health-related behaviour. CONCLUSIONS The delivery of a conversational agent for healthy lifestyle behaviour change via Facebook manager was feasible and acceptable. We were unable to recruit our planned sample solely using free options in Facebook. However, participant retention and conversational agent engagement rates were high. Our findings provide important insights to inform the design of a future randomised controlled trial.

Nudging is increasingly used in public health interventions in Western societies to produced health-promoting behavior changes; however, there is lack of clarity as to what constitutes a nudge, scant knowledge of the effectiveness of nudging techniques in public health lifestyle interventions and a number of ethical and value-based concerns. The aim of this review is to address these research lacunae and identify the characteristics of nudges in empirical research on public health interventions intended to induce healthy lifestyle changes, including whether they are effective. We conducted systematic searches for relevant articles published between January 2008 and April 2019 in three databases, PubMed, CINAHL and PsycINFO, and combined this with a metasynthesis to construct interpretative explanations. A total of 66 original studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings of the systematic review showed that most nudging interventions involved diet/nutrition, most were carried out as single experiments, and the majority had the intended effects. Specific nudging techniques were identified with respect to the broader nudging categories of accessibility, presentation, using messages and pictures, technology-supported information, financial incentives, affecting the senses, and cognitive loading; several studies included more than one nudging technique. Although many nudging techniques had the intended effects, it is unclear whether they would work outside the study setting. The synthesis revealed that the studies lacked critical reflection on the assumptions about health that were implicit in nudging interventions, the cultural acceptability of nudges, the context-free assumptions of nudging theory, and the implications of these aspects for the public health context.

The societies of developed countries, including Poland, are characterized by the dissemination of manifestations of the consumer lifestyle, which leads to a systematic deterioration of health and quality of life. The health and health safety should be systematically monitored and given in-depth scientific analyses, also from the perspective of pedagogy and sociology. In the scientific discourse there are various issues concerning both health hazards (inter alia related to globalization changes and lifestyle) and health promotion (for example, shaping pro-health attitudes and dissemination of participation in physical culture). Promoting a healthy lifestyle must be accompanied by investments in the material cultural-educational and sports-recreational base as well as by educational influences shaping the necessary level of knowledge and skills in the field of health.

The article is devoted to the research of goals and functions of lobbying activity. The author has processed the ideas of domestic and foreign scientists, proposed his own approaches to the definition of goals and functions of lobbying activities through the prism of public administration. As a result, a generalized vision of the goals and functions of lobbying activities as interrelated elements of the lobbying system was proposed, and a forecast for further evolution of the goals and functions of domestic lobbying was provided. The analysis of lobbying functions allowed us to notice the tendencies in shifting the goals of this activity. If the objectives were fully covered by functions such as mediation between citizens and the state, the information function and the function of organizing plurality of public interests, then the role of strengthening the self-organization of civil society and the function of compromise become increasingly important in the process of formation in the developed countries of civil society and the development of telecommunication technologies. Ukrainian lobbyism will not be left to the side of this process. Already, politicians of the highest level, leaders of financial and industrial groups have to act, adjust their goals (even if they are — declared), taking into account the reaction of the public. In the future, this trend will only increase. The analysis of current research and political events provides all grounds for believing that, while proper regulatory legislation is being formed in Ukraine, the goals and functions of domestic lobbying will essentially shift towards a compromise with the public. It is noted that in spite of the existence of a basic direction of action, lobbying may have several ramified goals. Guided by the goals set, lobbyism can manifest itself in various spheres of the political system of society, combining the closely intertwined interests of various actors in the lobbying process, or even — contrasting them.

The world is technologically advancing, but the management of resultant waste, commonly known as e-waste, is also becoming very challenging. Of major concern is the incessant flow of this waste into the developing world where they assume secondhand value in spite of the associated environmental threats. This study adopts the qualitative approach to examine this phenomenon in Nigeria. The study reveals that aside from being cheaper than the new products, second-hand goods are usually preferred to the new products due to the substandard nature of most new electronics largely imported from Asia (especially China). The tag of Tokunbo or ‘imported from the West’ associated with second-hand goods imported from developed countries makes them more preferable to the public relative to new electronics imported from China, disparagingly termed Chinco. Yet both the second-hand electronics that are socially appreciated as Tokunbo and the substandard new electronics imported into Nigeria together render the country a huge recipient of goods that soon collapse and swell the e-waste heap in the country. This situation may be mitigated through strengthening the Standards Organisation of Nigeria and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, and also by sensitizing Nigerians on the dangers inherent in e-wastes.

Abstract Background We aimed to clarify the predisposing factors for adolescent constipation in a longitudinal study, because while factors associated with childhood constipation have been reported, prospective studies on the incidence of constipation are lacking. Methods We enrolled 5540 adolescents aged 12 to 13 years from the Toyama Birth Cohort Study—a community-based prospective study examining children’s health. The incidence of constipation, defined as bowel movement frequency of less than once every 2 days, was surveyed during the three-year period from baseline (grade 4) to follow-up (grade 7). Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the association between the incidence of adolescent constipation and their lifestyle variables. Results A total of 261 adolescents (4.7%) developed constipation during the three-year period. Female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 2.62,) overweight (OR = 0.60), and infrequent intake of fruits (OR = 1.50) at baseline were associated with the incidence of constipation. Furthermore, factors related to lifestyle changes and psychological status such as skipping breakfast (OR = 1.73), becoming physically inactive (OR = 1.55), and being persistently irritated (OR = 1.80) were significantly associated with the incidence of constipation. Conclusion Our prospective study demonstrated that female sex, insufficient fruit intake, and deteriorating lifestyles such as skipping breakfast and becoming inactive during the 3-year period were associated with the incidence of adolescent constipation. Beyond anecdotal, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is recommended to reduce the incidence of adolescent constipation.

Burnout rates among physicians are rapidly rising. Leaders in the movement to address burnout have made the case that health care workplaces need to foster a culture of well-being, including trusting coworker interactions, collaborative and transparent leadership, work-life balance, flexibility, opportunities for meaningful work and for professional development, and effective 2-way communication. The rationale for focusing on organizational change to prevent burnout has pointed to persistent symptoms of burnout even when individual healthy lifestyle interventions are adopted. However, a case can be made that the lifestyle interventions were not implemented at the level of intensity recommended by the lifestyle medicine evidence-base to secure the desired improvement in physical and mental health when facing significant personal and environmental stressors. The lifestyle medicine community has the ethical mandate to advocate for intensive healthy lifestyle approaches to burnout prevention, in conjunction with organizational supports. By combining comprehensive and intensive lifestyle changes with organizational cultures of well-being, we can more effectively turn the tide of physician burnout.
