Shifting cultivation is a type of farming without fixed boundaries. It obeys an ecological logic but requires constant improvisation and adaptation to fluid circumstances. The character of improvisation in shifting cultivation is explored with reference to an African case study (rice farming by the Mende people of Sierra Leone). Two elements are emphasized in particular—the management of fire (by men) and rice seeds (by women). A contrast, applicable not only to farming, but also to other activities such as military conflict and musical performance, is drawn between strategic planning and tactical improvisation. The relevance of Mary Douglas’s grid-group theory to the framing of the social skill sets required for improvisation is discussed.

The article examines the problem of business communication and inclusion of phatic communication in the form of small talk while developing communicative skills of university students when studying Business Communication in English. Strategies and tactics of the English phatic genre of small talk are structurally analyzed from the point of view of linguistic means. The authors conclude that an adequate choice of strategies and tactics for small talk aimed at successful conduct of intercultural business communication is the social skill necessary for university students.

The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is multifactorial, complex, and likely involves interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. With respect to environmental influences, a growing literature implicates intrauterine experiences in the origin of this pervasive developmental disorder. In this prospective longitudinal study, we examined the hypothesis that fetal exposure to maternal cortisol may confer ASD risk. In addition, because ASD is four times more prevalent in males than in females, and because sexually dimorphic responses to intrauterine experiences are commonly observed, we examined whether or not any associations differ by fetal sex. Maternal plasma cortisol was measured at 15, 19, 25, 31, and 37 weeks’ gestation in a sample of 84 pregnant women. ASD symptoms were assessed in their 5-year-old children with the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ). Fetal exposure to lower levels of maternal cortisol was associated with higher levels of ASD symptoms only among boys. The observed hypocortisolemic profile exhibited by these mothers may indicate a risk factor that precedes the stress of caregiving for a child with ASD and may not be solely a consequence of the stress of caregiving, as previously thought. These findings confirm the value of examining prenatal hormone exposures as predictors of ASD risk and support the premise that altered prenatal steroid exposures may play a role in the etiology of ASD.

Abstract: Besides psychotic symptoms, schizophrenic patients also show alterations in cognitive function, verbal information, and emotional response, due to disturbances of interpersonal interaction. The impact of all of these is the disturbance in social function. Treatment of schizophrenic patients with psychopharmacotherapy can only suppress the symptoms, but it can not overcome the functional deficit. For this reason, combination of psychopharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and social rehabilitationin is introduced to obtain a better result in schizophrenic management. Social skill training is a part of the social rehabilitation that is very useful in improving the patients’ quality of life in preparing them to be functional in their society. Key words: schizophrenia, social rehabilitation, social skill training.  Abstrak: Pada penyandang skizofrenia selain gejala-gejala psikotik juga terdapat perubahan dalam fungsi kognisi, informasi verbal dan respon emosi akibat terganggunya interaksi interpersonal, yang berdampak gangguan dalam fungsi sosial. Pengobatan skizofrenia dengan menggunakan psikofarmaka hanya dapat menekan gejala-gejala penyakit ini tetapi tidak dapat mengatasi defisit fungsional. Untuk hal ini, pada pengobatan skizofrenia terkini digunakan kombinasi psikofarmaka, psikoterapi dan rehabilitasi sosial. Social skill training merupakan salah satu bagian dari rehabilitasi sosial yang bermanfaat meningkatkan kwalitas hidup dalam mempersiapkan penyandang skizofrenia  untuk dapat berfungsi kembali dalam masyarakat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan sosial siswa dalam pembelajaran IPS melalui outdoor activity sebagai metode pembelajaran. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas dengan subjek penelitian siswa kelas VIIA SMP Negeri 1 Kaligondang Kabupaten Purbalingga. Penelitian ini terfokus pada peningkatan keterampilan sosial siswa. Data peningkatan keterampilan sosial diperoleh melalui pengamatan, wawancara, dokumentasi, yang selanjutnya dianalisis untuk dibandingkan: (1) hasil pengamatan sebelum tindakan dan sesudah tindakan, dan (2) hasil pengamatan keterampilan sosial tiap siklus yang didukung oleh tanggapan berbagai pihak. Sebelum dilakukan tindakan, peneliti melakukan pengamatan keterampilan sosial dengan hasil rerata 2,79. Pada penerapan outdoor activitiy siklus I diperoleh skor rerata sebesar 3,12 (kategori cukup). Pada penerapan outdoor activity siklus II diperoleh skor rerata sebesar 3,69 (kategori baik). Pada penerapan outdoor activity siklus III mengalami peningkatan dengan skor rerata 4,16 (kategori baik). Berdasarkan hasil pengamatan keterampilan sosial siswa pada prasiklus, siklus I, siklus II, dan siklus III, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan metode outdoor activity dalam pembelajaran IPS dapat meningkatkan keterampilan sosial pada siswa. Dengan demikian metode pembelajaran dengan outdoor activity layak diterapkan dalam pembelajaran IPS sebagai salah satu kegiatan pembelajaran, khususnya untuk meningkatkan keterampilan sosial siswa. Kata kunci: keterampilan sosial, outdoor activity, pembelajaran IPS SMP______________________________________________________________ IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SOCIAL SKILLS IN SOCIAL STUDIES LEARNING THROUGH OUTDOOR ACTIVITY IN SMP NEGERI 1 KALIGONDANG PURBLINGGA REGENCY Abstract This study aims to improve the social skills of students in social studies learning through outdoor activity as a learning method. This was a classrooms action research study involving grade VIIA students of SMP Negeri 1 Kaligondang Purbalingga regency. This study focused on improving the social skill. The data of improvement of social skills were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, which is then analyzed for comparison: (1) the result of observations before and after the actions, and (2) the result of observation of social skills of each cycle supported by responses from different  parties. Before the actions, the researchers conducted observations of social skills and the mean score was 2.79 (in the moderate category). Through the application of the outdoor activitiy in cycle I obtained mean score of 3.12 (in the moderate category). Through the application of the outdoor activity in cycle II obtained mean score of 3.69 (in the good category). Through the application of outdoor activity in cycle III, the student’ social skill improved, with a mean score of 4.16 (in the good category). Based on the result of the observations of students' social skills on precycle, cycle I, cycle II, and  cycle III, it can be concluded that the application of the learning method of outdoor activity in Social Studies can improve social skills in students. Thus the method of learning with outdoor activity feasible in learning social studies as one of the learning activities, in particular to improve the students’ social skills. The relational astuteness that underlies brokerage process and knowledge articulation is the major focus of this chapter. One’s ability to encode a communication has to work hand in hand with the ability to read one’s audience, in order to shape the knowledge that is to be articulated and manage relationships. The chapter first examines the social astuteness that underpins a dyadic exchange, drawing on Mead’s symbolic interactionist perspective and the communication practices of role taking, self as object, imaginative rehearsal, and behavioral adaptation. The chapter then extends that approach to the triadic perspective emphasized in this book. The chapter next explores perspective articulation in greater depth and then turns to riffing—another facet of social skill—where actors draw on the voice or lived-in experience of another individual or category of individuals to drive innovation. The chapter concludes with field observations to capture the influential program manager’s social skill.
