The objectives of this research were three-fold: to explore the types of politeness uttered by the teacher, to analyze the most predominant type of politeness uttered, and to explore the strategies of politeness uttered by the teacher in an English classroom. This research employed a descriptive qualitative analysis. The subject of this research was an English teacher of MAN 1 Kolaka. This research was conducted with two cohorts; they were class XII.IA-2 and class XII.IA-4. The data were collected from three observations and recordings of teacher’s utterances. As many as 117 politeness utterances were identified, encompassing 55 positive politeness utterances, 45 negative politeness utterances, 6 bald on record utterances and 1 off record utterance. There were 17 strategies of politeness used by the English teacher. The most predominant type of politeness was positive politeness, including the strategies of exaggerating sympathy with the Hearer, which was used 3 times, including both the Speaker and the Hearer 6 times, giving gifts to Hearer 26 times, being optimistic 10 times, offering 2 times, notice attend to Hearer 4 times, using group identity mark 3 times, and Intensifying interest to the hearer 1 time.Keywords:Pragmatics, Politeness Strategies, Teacher’s Utterances, English Classroom

This study deals with politeness strategies in political language. The aim of the study is to describe how Indonesian politicians realize politeness in their language. The subject was taken nine parties who have representatives. They come from different parties: Democrat, Golkar, PDIP, PKS, PPP, PKB, PAN, Gerindra and Hanura. Data were classified and verified with reference to the criteria of politeness strategies as determined by Brown & Levinson (1987); cover the bald on record strategy, positive strategy, negative strategy and off-record strategy. The finding show that there were four types of politeness strategies used by Politicians in different of types of illocutionary acts; positive strategy, bald on record strategy, negative strategy, and off-record strategy. The most dominant type of politeness strategies used was positive strategy. The most dominant type was due to fact that speakers in interaction try to get closer the hearers. They use the group identity marker in addressing someone so there is no distance relationship between the speaker and hearer. They also gave the reasons when they speak in order to satisfy the hearer. Key words: politician; political language; politeness strategy

This descriptive qualitative research was aimed at finding out the kinds of students’ misbehavior in the classroom of Mechanical Engineering Department of grade 11 in SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja, knowing the students’ reasons for doing misbehaviors in the classroom, and also the aim at knowing the teacher’s responses towards the students’ misbehaviors happened in the classroom. The subject of this research was all students in the classroom of Mechanical Engineering Department of grade11 and their English teacher. Observation and interview were the techniques used to collect the data of this research. Descriptive qualitative techniques were then used to analyze the data that was gathered. The result of this research showed that there were ten kinds of students’ misbehavior happened in the classroom of Mechanical Engineering Department grade 11 in SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja. Those misbehaviors were inattention, apathy, needless talk, moving about the room, annoying others, disruption, lying, cheating, aggression and fighting, and also defiance of authority. Six of those misbehaviors happened consistently and four of those misbehaviors happened inconsistently in the classroom. There were found six students’ reasons for doing those ten kinds of misbehavior in the classroom. After that, there were found five teacher’s responses towards misbehaviors done by the students in the classroom of Mechanical Engineering Department of grade 11 in SMK Negeri 3 Singaraja.

This research is intended to describe of the role of the textbook in English class. The subject of the study was English teachers in state junior high school in Banjarmasin. Data were collected through interviews, class observation, and document analysis. The investigation found that the teachers considered the textbook both central and external books helped them in preparing the lesson. They used several strategies to adapt the textbook by adding the material and modifying the task in the book. There were three main problems faced by English teachers at state junior high school 23 Banjarmasin, limited supported kits from the book, lacks materials inside the textbook, and high language level for students used in the book. However, this research is essential to conduct to present the real situation that happened in the English classroom.

This study aims to compare similarities and differences about the learning video. This type of research is descriptive qualitative analysis research. The subject of this study was observing a learning video, one of the teachers of Grade V.A SD Negeri 100 Palembang with a learning video from Youtube. This research was conducted in the odd semester of the 2020- 2021 school year. Data analysis in this study using observation sheets and interviews. In terms of the content of learning materials have been well used for students both teacher videos and videos from Youtube, the use of music in the teacher's video and Youtube has used musical instruments with a low voice followed by voice over. Even though both the teacher's video and the video made by the creator on Youtube still have some shortcomings but not too fatal such as the error of the word and display the face of the narrator. teacher-made learning videos and learning videos from Youtube to the whole have been good to be used in learning although there are some parts that must be improved in the future so that the learning videos made more interesting, easy to understand and effective. Keywords: Analysis, Learning Videos, Comparison

This study is about the teacher’s interactional modifications in teaching the intermediate students in an English Course in Surabaya. The three objectives of this study are to find out the types of the teacher’s interactional modifications, the students’ responses toward the teacher’s interactional modifications, and the contribution of the interactional modifications for the students’ learning. The subject of the data is an English teacher and fourteen students.  Moreover, the theory applied was a theory of the interactional modifications from William, Inscoe, and Tasker (2014). The findings revealed that the teacher used five types of interactional modifications namely confirmation check, clarification request, comprehension check, repetition, and reformulation. While for the students’ responses, it showed that the students gave correct responses, incorrect responses, and no responses. Furthermore, it also revealed that interactional modifications gave four contributions; making the meaning more comprehensible for the learners, improving the learners’ language, minimizing the misunderstanding between the teacher and the learners, and ensuring that the learners were following. Finally, the writer concluded that the interactional modifications help the learners to learning the language

The research is aimed  at  finding out the politeness  strategies  based on Brown and Levinson politeness strategies theory that used by the members of UKM Debat, the University of Bengkulu when practice debate. The subject of this research was the members of UKM Debat, the University of Bengkulu that consist of eight students. This research was using descriptive qualitative as the methodology and the data were collected by using transcript from video recorder and observation sheet as the instruments. The result of data analysis shows that the debaters use all of politeness strategies but they do not used all sub strategies when practice debate, which is bald on record, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record. There were 28 utterances that consist of politeness strategy. The debaters mostly applied positive politeness strategy, which occurs 19 times (67,8%). Bald on record and off record occur 4 times (14,3%) and the last is negative politeness strategy which occurs 1 times (3,6%). Positive politeness strategy gets  the  highest  position  in  the  data  because  in  practicing  debate,  all debaters have known each other and have a close relationship

<p>This research deals with the use Positive Politeness in “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” Movie. To do the research, the writer formulates the problem as follow: (1) What Positive Politeness strategies are used in “Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince” Movie? 2. What is the most dominant strategy of Positive Politeness Used in “Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince” Movie? This study is focused on Brown and Levinson (1987) positive politeness theory by using fifteen strategies of positive politeness. The objective of the study are to describe and determine the positive politeness used in that movie. The data are obtained from all the dialogues in that movie. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The subject of this study is “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” movie, and the objects are the fifteen strategies of positive politeness. The techniques of collecting data are by watching movie, identifying and transcribing the script of the dialogues then put them into columns. The data is analyzed by identifying and transcribing the script of the dialogues, classifying the positive politeness strategies used in that movie then counting it and find out the dominant positive politeness strategy. The findings of the data analysis show that there are thirteen of fifteen strategies of positive politeness found in the movie each with the number and percentage of occurrences. The aim of this research is to identify functional characteristics of English teacher talks when delivering material in English classroom for target students in Makassar Islamic University. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data are obtained from talks of four teachers through observation, recording, interview and field notes. The teacher talks are carefully transcribed. The data are analyzed by categorizing the teachers’ talks to find out the functional characteristics of the talks. The research indicated nine functional characteristics of teacher talks: introducing material, correcting, repeating, explaining, defining, giving example, clarifying, questioning and encouraging. Each functional characteristic is employed to make the teaching process meaningful for the students’ comprehensions.

This research explores the forms of politeness strategies in utterances of Otto Hasibuan in Judge Session of Mirna’s case. The research method of this research uses descriptive qualitative method. The subject of the research is Otto Hasibuan’s utterances in Judge Session of Mirna’s case. Furthermore, this research uses the Otto Hasibuan’s utterances containing politeness strategies. In collecting the data, the researcher uses noting and transcribing technique. Then, the data analyzing of this research are categorizing, data classifying, and data analyzing. The researcher watched the Judge Session, wrote down the script, translated the script, identified the Otto’s utterances, classified the script based on the forms of politeness strategies, then analyzed the data. In analyzing the data, it shows that the politeness forms used by Otto Hasibuan have ten typical speech acts: warning, asking (for permission), questioning, requesting, suggesting, agreeing, informing, criticizing, respecting, and thanking, which are categorized into five maxims: tact maxim, agreement maxims, opinion-reticence maxim, approbation maxim, and obligation maxim.

This study titled politeness strategies in Banjar community. The problem raised is how a form of politeness strategies in Banjar community. The purpose was to determine the form of politeness strategies in Banjar community. Methods of research on the subject of politeness strategies in Banjar community is using descriptive method. Collecting data in Bamban village of months of February and March 2016. The results of the research is a form of politeness strategies in Banjar community includes attention to what is needed or preferred opponent said, using solidarity or group identity through a greeting or jargon , offer or promise anything , to avoid overlapping, and clowning.
