Numerous time series for small-to-moderate-magnitude (SMM) earthquakes have been recorded in many regions. A uniformly-processed ground-motion database is essential in the development of regional ground-motion models. An automated processing protocol is useful in developing the database for these earthquakes especially when the number of recordings is substantial. This study compares a manual and an automated ground-motion processing methods using SMM earthquakes. The manual method was developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center to build the database of time series and associated ground-motion parameters. The automated protocol was developed to build a database of pseudo-spectral acceleration for the Kiban-Kyoshin network recordings. Two significant differences were observed when the two methods were applied to identical acceleration time series. First, the two methods differed in the criteria for the acceptance or rejection of the time series in the database. Second, they differed in the high-pass corner frequency used to filter noise from the acceleration time series. The influences of these differences were investigated on ground-motion parameters to elucidate the quality of ground-motion database for SMM earthquakes.

We used the moderate-magnitude aftershocks succeeding to the 2016 August 24th, Mw = 6.0, Amatrice (Italy) mainshok to asses, specially during an ongoing seismic sequence, the soil-structure interaction where cultural Heritage is involved. We have chosen as case study the San Giovanni Battista church (A.D. 1039) in Acquasanta Terme town, about 20 Km northeast of Amatrice. First of all we studied the soil shaking features in order to characterize the input to the monument. Then, using the recordings in the church, we tried to figure out how the input seismic energy is distributed over the different monument parts. Some preliminary results are shown and discussed.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to analyze the impact of sports participation (12 months of practice) on the components of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in both sexes. Methods This is an observational longitudinal study, a part of which is entitled “Analysis of Behaviors of Children During Growth” (ABCD Growth Study), Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil. The sample was composed of 171 adolescents (112 boys and 59 girls), divided into non-sports and sports groups. High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), triglycerides, and glucose were analyzed by the colorimetric method of dry chemistry and processed biochemically. Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure were measured using an automatic device. Body fat was estimated using a densitometry scanner. Results Adolescents who practiced sports were younger (p-value=0.001) and had a lower peak height velocity (p-value=0.001) than the non-sports group. The differences (Δ) after 12 months were of greater magnitude for the sports group when compared to the non-sports group (p-value=0.013), glucose (moderate magnitude in favor of the sports group; p-value=0.001), HDL-c (small magnitude in favor of the sports group; p-value=0.0015), and MetS (moderate magnitude in favor of the sports group; p-value=0.001). Conclusions The practice of sports in adolescents had a protective effect on the metabolic components of MetS.

This research analyzes the generalization ability of learning in children and adolescents with Asperger Syndrome to attentional cognitive aspects with different demands on exercised through the use of a direct cognitive stimulation program. The sample consisted of 15 cases with Asperger between 7 and 15 years (M = 12, SD = 2.7) with attentional difficulties, measured by psychometric orientation instruments, to which an attention training program was implemented to two hours per week for six consecutive months. The results of the pretest-posttest analysis showed statistically significant differences in all attentional subsystems. Selective attention differences are moderate in variables related to processing speed, in sustained attention the reaction time significantly decreased (moderate magnitude of the difference) and increased the successes reducing errors (both with a large magnitude difference) . In alternating attention, a greater number of successes were observed and in split attention higher levels of total responses (both moderate magnitude) were obtained. It is concluded that the attentional performance in the cases analyzed improvement after applying a cognitive training program specifically being able to generalize learning psychometric measures.

Testing 56 Japanese undergraduates, the relationships between pain threshold and pain tolerance in cold water and personality factors were investigated. Significant negative correlations of moderate magnitude between the pain threshold and scores on Maudsley Neuroticism and the Manifest Anxiety Scale were found. On the contrary, significant positive, moderate correlations between pain tolerance and the Maudsley Extraversion were obtained.

Four hydropenic female subjects who engaged in sham water drinking associated with suggested satiation of thirst during a short period of hypnosis responded by water diuresis of moderate magnitude after the termination of hypnosis. No evidence of water diuresis was observed under similar conditions in four male subjects, a circumstance possibly related to the effects of bladder catheterization. No significant increase in sodium excretion, sodium excretion fraction, or inulin clearance was observed in any instance. Submitted on April 9, 1962
