Getting good and sufficiently long sleep at night is important for health, effective functioning, and well-being. However, insufficient or delayed sleep are important and growing social problems that can lead to fatigue, poor performance, deterioration of well-being, circadian rhythm disturbances, and health problems. One of the significant determinants of sleep deprivation is bedtime procrastination, which is understood as the individual tendency to postpone going to bed in the absence of any external circumstances that force one to do so. Nowadays, this phenomenon is widespread in various social groups, especially among students. Despite the high prevalence of bedtime procrastination, its relationship with personality characteristics has not yet been thoroughly studied. The presented research aimed to identify the possible impact of the basic dispositional personality traits and trait-like personality characteristics on bedtime procrastination and daytime fatigue resulting from a deficiency of sleep at night. The responses from 399 university students who voluntarily took part in an internet survey were analyzed. The severity of bedtime procrastination was assessed using the Bedtime Procrastination Scale. Five basic dispositional personality traits (extraversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness/intellect) and their components (aspects) were measured using the International Personality Item Pool – Big Five Aspects Scale. Self-esteem and general self-efficacy were assessed using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the General Self-Efficacy Scale. Perceived locus of control was measured using the Delta Questionnaire. The direct and indirect relationships between personality variables and daytime fatigue were investigated using linear regression models with bedtime procrastination as a mediator variable. Industriousness and orderliness, both of which are aspects of conscientiousness, were found to be indirectly associated with daytime fatigue as a consequence of their impact on bedtime procrastination. Volatility and withdrawal, both of which are aspects of neuroticism, were found to be directly related to daytime fatigue without the intermediary impact of bedtime procrastination. Self-esteem was shown to be associated with experiencing daytime fatigue, both directly and indirectly through bedtime procrastination. General self-efficacy and external locus of control were associated with daytime fatigue only directly, without the intermediary role of bedtime procrastination. The results of our research indicate that personality factors may not only play an important role in shaping sleep-related health behaviors, but they also affect well-being during the day.

Self-esteem, general self-efficacy, and career adaptability, which include career concern, control, curiosity, and confidence, are important resources for adolescents who are required to make important educational and professional choices. No studies have investigated how these resources codevelop over time and their impact on life satisfaction. To more precisely study this codevelopment and the impact of these resources on well-being, 357 Swiss adolescents were assessed 3 times during the last 17 months of compulsory school. The results showed an interrelationship between career adaptability and self-efficacy and a unidirectional effect of self-esteem on life satisfaction over time. They also highlighted the importance of career adapt-ability concerns for predicting the other three career adapt-abilities. Overall, the results suggested that in adolescents, higher levels of career adaptability may favor higher levels of general self-efficacy and that higher levels of self-esteem may induce higher levels of life satisfaction. Implications for practice are discussed.

This article demonstrates that the impact of role models (RMs) on students’ self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention is moderated by their entrepreneurial experience and personality variables such as self-esteem and locus of control. 276 students enrolled in an entrepreneurship education programs (EEPs) were exposed to either a positive or a negative sensitisation message by alumni who became entrepreneurs to test its impact on the students’ self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. Findings indicate that students with entrepreneurial experience, high self-esteem and internal locus of control are less impacted by entrepreneurial role models. We discuss the relevance and effectiveness of role models in EEPs.

Psychological well-being is a significant determinant of mental health and success in profession of future class and preschool teachers. Hence, it is extremely important to investigate the individual factors that contribute to it. The aim of this research is to determine the contribution of personality traits, self-esteem and the locus of control in predicting the degree of subjective well-being in future class and preschool teachers. The sample included 418 students. The following instruments were used in the research: the Short Subjective Well-being Scale (KSB), the Big Five Plus Two questionnaire (VP+2), Rosenberg?s Self-Esteem Scale and the Scale for Measuring the Locus of Control (LO K IM-2). The results indicate that all three investigated categories of individual factors significantly predict the affective (64% of variance explained) and cognitive component (51% of variance explained) of subjective wellbeing, whereby personality traits proved to be the most important predictors. Neuroticism and extraversion contribute most to positive affectivity (N?=-0,801; E?=- 0,794) and a positive attitude towards life (N?=-0,701; E?=-0,736). The educational implications refer to the possibilities of encouraging and developing those individual personality traits that significantly contribute to subjective well-being of future class and preschool teachers. In this way, we can also contribute to their mental health, which is the necessary precondition of the accomplishment of educational work.

AbstractThere is still a scarcity of studies showing the relative contribution of different personality characteristics differentiating various behavioral addictions within an integrated model. In comparison to other addictions, fairly little is known about the role of specific personality traits in compulsive shopping. In addition, few studies have investigated the unique contribution of shopping addiction in terms of explaining different facets of well-being above and beyond personality characteristics previously shown to be related to psychosocial functioning. The present study shows validation of the Bergen Shopping Addiction Scale (BSAS) and a tentative integrated model of potential shopping addiction personality risk factors. BSAS was administered to 1156 Polish students. In addition, demographic variables, and personality traits (Big Five), self-esteem, self-efficacy, perceived narcissism, loneliness, social anxiety, and well-being indicators were measured. BSAS had acceptable fit with the data and demonstrated good reliability. The investigated model showed that shopping addiction was related to higher extraversion, perceived narcissism, and social anxiety, and lower agreeableness and general self-efficacy. Woman and older participants scored higher on BSAS. Shopping addiction was further related to all facets of impaired well-being and explained worse general health, and decreased sleep quality above and beyond other variables in the model. The results support the notion that shopping addiction may have specific personality risk factors with low agreeableness as an outstanding characteristic. This has implications for the development of early prevention and intervention programs.

Although subjective well-being is considered important for nurses, the relationship between hope, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being among nurses has rarely been assessed. This study purposes to explore the relationships between hope, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being. The analysis relies on data from 1757 female nurses in 3 hospitals in China. Nurses completed a demographic form, General Self-efficacy Scale, Hope Scale, General Well-Being Schedule. A mediate model of the hypothesized relationships between the constructs was tested. Significant direct relationships of hope, self-efficacy, and subjective well-being were displayed. Mediation analyses reveal that the impact of self-efficacy on subjective well-being is partially mediated by two components of hope, agency and pathways. Hope was shown to be a key mediator for the relationships between self-efficacy and subjective well-being. These findings advance current understandings on the hopeful thinking in nurses.

PurposeIt is of great importance for organizations to identify what can influence employees’ well-being. The theoretical model that the authors propose combines psychological and social determinants of stress at work. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the contribution of work organization conditions, personality traits and their interaction to well-being in a sample of Canadian workers and companies.Design/methodology/approachMultilevel regression analyses were performed on a sample of 1,957 workers employed in 63 Quebec firms. Work organization conditions included (skill utilization, decision authority, psychological demands, physical demands, job insecurity, irregular schedule, number of working hours, social support from colleagues and supervisors, job promotion, and recognition) and personality traits included (self-esteem, locus of control and Big Five).FindingsWork organization conditions (psychological demands, number of hours worked and job insecurity) and personality (self-esteem, locus of control, extraversion, neuroticism and conscientiousness) were significantly associated with well-being. The results of the analysis show that none of the personality traits included in this study interacts with work organization conditions to explain workers’ level of well-being.Originality/valueThis study provides support for the implementation of human resource management (HRM) practices in order to diminish the presence of stressful working conditions as well as for the eventual development of training programs designed to raise personality traits.

This study examined the impact of positive psychological traits (positive coping, self-efficacy, and self-esteem) on the relationship between seizure severity and life satisfaction among individuals with epilepsy. Hierarchical regression analysis and correlation techniques were used to test a hypothesized tri-mediation model of life satisfaction for individuals with epilepsy. Results indicated that seizure severity and positive human traits, including positive coping, self-efficacy, and self-esteem, were indeed associated with overall life satisfaction. Self-efficacy and self-esteem (but not positive coping) fully mediated the relationship between seizure severity and life satisfaction, lending support for a dual-mediation model. These findings suggest there may be considerable value for rehabilitation psychologists and counselors to develop specialized intervention programs that focus on capitalizing these positive human traits to promote life satisfaction and well-being for clients with epilepsy.

<p>In this study, the relationship between pre-service teachers' psychological well-being levels and self-esteem, perceived general self-efficacy, cognitive emotion regulation strategies and hope variables were investigated together with how these variables predicted pre-service teachers' psychological well-being. The research was conducted via relational screening model. The research group consists of a total of 403 participants including 206 females and 197 males, who received pedagogical formation education at a university located in Turkey’s Marmara Region, and participants were selected using a simple random sampling method. In the research, Psychological Well-Being Scale (short form), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Cognitive Emotion Regulation Scale, the Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools. The data obtained were analyzed by multiple linear regression analysis. According to the findings, self-esteem, general self-efficacy, level of hope, positive reappraisal from cognitive emotion regulation strategies, accusing and accepting others significantly predicted psychological well-being.</p><p> </p><p><strong> Article visualizations:</strong></p><p><img src="/-counters-/edu_01/0526/a.php" alt="Hit counter" /></p>
