In this work, we shed light on the issue of estimating Intravoxel Incoherent Motion (IVIM) for diffusion and perfusion estimation by characterizing the objective function using simplicial homology tools. We provide a robust solution via topological optimization of this model so that the estimates are more reliable and accurate. Estimating the tissue microstructure from diffusion MRI is in itself an ill-posed and a non-linear inverse problem. Using variable projection functional (VarPro) to fit the standard bi-exponential IVIM model we perform the optimization using simplicial homology based global optimization to better understand the topology of objective function surface. We theoretically show how the proposed methodology can recover the model parameters more accurately and consistently by casting it in a reduced subspace given by VarPro. Additionally we demonstrate that the IVIM model parameters cannot be accurately reconstructed using conventional numerical optimization methods due to the presence of infinite solutions in subspaces. The proposed method helps uncover multiple global minima by analyzing the local geometry of the model enabling the generation of reliable estimates of model parameters.

Abstract Currently, in automotive industry, identification of vehicle crash model parameters on test measurements is a key point. This paper outlines an approach based on optimization methods for this problem in the context of side impacts. It presents the problematic of crash model parameter identification. The engineer’s evaluation criteria of correlation are translated into an optimization objective function. Several optimization strategies are applied to identification of side impact crash model parameters. The comportment on our problem of these strategies are characterized, and numerical results show that the method of tabou search provides a good solution.

We describe here methods of estimating interval velocities based on two nonlinear optimization methods; very fast simulated annealing (VFSA) and a genetic algorithm (GA). The objective function is defined using prestack seismic data after depth migration. This inverse problem involves optimizing the lateral consistency of reflectors between adjacent migrated shot records. In effect, the normal moveout correction in velocity analysis is replaced by prestack depth migration. When the least‐squared difference between each pair of migrated shots is at a minimum, the true velocity model has been found. Our model is parameterized using cubic‐B splines distributed on a rectangular grid. The main advantages of using migrated data are that they do not require traveltime picking, knowledge of the source wavelet, and expensive computation of synthetic waveform data to assess the degree of data‐model fit. Nonlinear methods allow automated determination of the global minimum without relying on estimates of the gradient of the objective function, the starting model, or making assumptions about the nature of the objective function itself. For the velocity estimation problem, the VFSA converges 4 to 5 times faster than the GA for both a 2-D synthetic example and a structurally complex real data example from the Gulf of Mexico. Though computationally intensive, this problem requires few model parameters, and use of a fast traveltime code for Kirchhoff migration makes the algorithm tractable for real earth problems.

AbstractThe paper presents a method for determining electromagnetic parameters of different synchronous generator models based on dynamic waveforms measured at power rejection. Such a test can be performed safely under normal operating conditions of a generator working in a power plant. A generator model was investigated, expressed by reactances and time constants of steady, transient, and subtransient state in the d and q axes, as well as the circuit models (type (3,3) and (2,2)) expressed by resistances and inductances of stator, excitation, and equivalent rotor damping circuits windings. All these models approximately take into account the influence of magnetic core saturation. The least squares method was used for parameter estimation. There was minimized the objective function defined as the mean square error between the measured waveforms and the waveforms calculated based on the mathematical models. A method of determining the initial values of those state variables which also depend on the searched parameters is presented. To minimize the objective function, a gradient optimization algorithm finding local minima for a selected starting point was used. To get closer to the global minimum, calculations were repeated many times, taking into account the inequality constraints for the searched parameters. The paper presents the parameter estimation results and a comparison of the waveforms measured and calculated based on the final parameters for 200 MW and 50 MW turbogenerators.

The article presents the results of multivariate calculations for the levitation metal melting system. The research had two main goals. The first goal of the multivariate calculations was to find the relationship between the basic electrical and geometric parameters of the selected calculation model and the maximum electromagnetic buoyancy force and the maximum power dissipated in the charge. The second goal was to find quasi-optimal conditions for levitation. The choice of the model with the highest melting efficiency is very important because electromagnetic levitation is essentially a low-efficiency process. Despite the low efficiency of this method, it is worth dealing with it because is one of the few methods that allow melting and obtaining alloys of refractory reactive metals. The research was limited to the analysis of the electromagnetic field modeled three-dimensionally. From among of 245 variants considered in the article, the most promising one was selected characterized by the highest efficiency. This variant will be a starting point for further work with the use of optimization methods.

A stable and unique solution to the ill-posed inverse problem in radio synthesis image analysis is sought employing Bayesian probability theory combined with a probabilistic two-component mixture model. The solution of the ill-posed inverse problem is given by inferring the values of model parameters defined to describe completely the physical system arised by the data. The analysed data are calibrated visibilities, Fourier transformed from the ( u , v ) to image planes. Adaptive splines are explored to model the cumbersome background model corrupted by the largely varying dirty beam in the image plane. The de-convolution process of the dirty image from the dirty beam is tackled in probability space. Probability maps in source detection at several resolution values quantify the acquired knowledge on the celestial source distribution from a given state of information. The information available are data constrains, prior knowledge and uncertain information. The novel algorithm has the aim to provide an alternative imaging task for the use of the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) in support of the widely used Common Astronomy Software Applications (CASA) enhancing the capabilities in source detection.

Abstract Use of mathematical optimization methods for synthesis of path-generating mechanisms has had only limited success due to the very complex nature of the commonly used Structural Error objective function. The complexity arises, in part, because the objective function represents not only the error in the shape of the coupler curve, but also the error in location, orientation and size of the curve. Furthermore, the common introduction of timing (or crank angle), done generally to facilitate selection of corresponding points on the curve for calculating structural error, has little practical value and unnecessarily limits possible solutions. This paper proposes a new objective function, based on Fourier Descriptors, which allows search for coupler curve of the desired shape without reference to location, orientation, or size. The proposed objective function compares overall shape properties of curves rather than making point-by-point comparison and therefore does not requires prescription of timing. Experimental evidence is provided to show that it is much easier to search the space of the proposed objective function compared to the structural error function.

Many robots are dedicated to replicate trajectories recorded manually; the recorded trajectories may contain singularities, which occur when positions and/or orientations are not achievable by the robot. The optimization of those trajectories is a complex issue and classical optimization methods present a deficient performance when solving them. Metaheuristics are well-known methodologies for solving hard engineering problems. In this case, they are applied to obtain alternative trajectories that pass as closely as possible to the original one, reorienting the end-effector and displacing its position to avoid the singularities caused by limitations of inverse kinematics equations, the task, and the workspace. In this article, alternative solutions for an ill-posed problem concerning the behavior of the robotic end-effector position and orientation are proposed using metaheuristic algorithms such as cuckoo search, differential evolution, and modified artificial bee colony. The case study for this work considers a three-revolute robot (3R), whose trajectories can contain or not singularities, and an optimization problem is defined to minimize the objective function that represents the error of the alternative trajectories. A tournament in combination with a constant of proportionality allows the metaheuristics to modify the gradual orientation and position of the robot when a singularity is present. Consequently, the procedure selects from all the possible elbow-configurations the best that fits the trajectory. A classical numerical technique, Newton’s method, is used to compare the results of the applied metaheuristics, to evaluate their quality. The results of this implementation indicate that metaheuristic algorithms are an efficient tool to solve the problem of optimizing the end-effector behavior, because of the quality of the alternative trajectory produced.

The article considers the problem of optimizing the geometric parameters of the cross section of the belts of a trihedral lattice support in the shape of a pentagon. The axial moment of inertia is taken as the objective function. Relations are found between the dimensions of the pentagonal cross section at which the objective function takes the maximum value. We introduce restrictions on the constancy of the consumption of material, as well as the condition of equal stability. The solution is performed using nonlinear optimization methods in the Matlab environment.

Antlion Optimization (ALO) is one of the latest population based optimization methods that proved its good performance in a variety of applications. The ALO algorithm copies the hunting mechanism of antlions to ants in nature. Community detection in social networks is conclusive to understanding the concepts of the networks. Identifying network communities can be viewed as a problem of clustering a set of nodes into communities. k-median clustering is one of the popular techniques that has been applied in clustering. The problem of clustering network can be formalized as an optimization problem where a qualitatively objective function that captures the intuition of a cluster as a set of nodes with better in ternal connectivity than external connectivity is selected to be optimized. In this paper, a mixture antlion optimization and k-median for solving the community detection problem is proposed and named as K-median Modularity ALO. Experimental results which are applied on real life networks show the ability of the mixture antlion optimization and k-median to detect successfully an optimized community structure based on putting the modularity as an objective function.

Объектом исследования является крышка люкового закрытия сухогрузного судна, служащая для обеспечения непроницаемости грузовых помещений и перевозки на ней грузов и обеспечивающая безопасность сухогрузных судов и осуществляемой на них морской перевозки грузов. Большая материалоемкость крышек снижает экономическую эффективность судна, ведет к необходимости использования мощных и массогабаритных средств подъема крышек (для съемных люковых закрытий), либо поворота и передвижения крышек (для шарнирно-откидных закрытий). Целью статьи является существенное снижение материалоемкости крышек люкового закрытия за счет рационального выбора их материала и конструктивного оформления при одновременном обеспечении требуемого уровня их надежности. Параметрическая оптимизация традиционной стальной крышки люкового закрытия сухогрузного судна проекта RSD59 может привести к снижению ее массы не более чем на 15-17. Поэтому для достижения цели работы решается задача оптимизации конструкции алюминиевой крышки на основе комплексного подхода, состоящего в последовательном использовании топологических и параметрических оптимизационных методов и выполнении на последней стадии работы снижения уровня концентрации напряжений путем оптимизации формы узлов крышки. При этом на стадии выбора конструктивно-силовой схемы крышки применяются приёмы топологической оптимизации, на стадии выбора толщин и параметров силовых элементов способы параметрической оптимизации, а на стадии конструктивно-технологического оформления узлов методы оптимизации формы. Выполненные расчетные исследования привели к следующим основным результатам: к выявлению прогрессивных конструктивно-силовых схем и конструктивно-технологических решений, обеспечивающих значительное снижению массы крышек люковых закрытий при умеренных затратах на их изготовление к высоким оценкам эффективности использования современных алюминиевых сплавов для изготовления люковых закрытий, способствующим существенному снижению их материалоемкости (примерно двукратному и более по сравнению с использованием стали), улучшению условий их функционирования и проведения погрузочно-разгрузочных работ на сухогрузных судах к выводу об эффективности использования разработанных конструкторских решений для крышек люковых закрытий при создании перспективных сухогрузных судов.A bulk carrier hatch cover, which provides cargo compartments impermeability and cargo transportation on the cover, as well as safety of bulk carriers and sea cargo transportation in them, is studied. Cover high material consumption decreases vessel profitability, causes the necessity to use either powerful and mass-dimensional cover lifting devices (for removable hatch covers) or covers rotation and movement (for hinged covers). The purpose of this paper consists in considerable decrease of hatch cover material consumption through rational selection of covers material and design at provision of the required covers reliability level. Parametric optimization of a conventional steel cover of RSD59 project bulk carrier could result in cover mass decrease by more than 15 to 17. Therefore, to achieve the work purpose, a problem of aluminum cover structural optimization was solved based on a comprehensive approach that consisted in successive use of topologic and parametric optimization methods and decrease of the stress concentration level at the last step via cover assemblies shape optimization. At that topological optimization methods were applied at the stage of selecting cover structural arrangement parametric optimization methods were applied at the stage of selecting load-carrying elements thickness and parameters, and shape optimization methods were used at the stage of structural and technology design of assemblies. The performed calculation studies resulted in the following: revealing the advanced structural arrangements and design and technology solutions that provide considerable hatch covers mass decrease at reasonable costs for their manufacture high assessment of using advanced aluminum alloys for manufacturing hatch covers that promote considerable decrease of their material consumption (approximately up to twofold or greater in comparison with steel), improving conditions of cover functioning and handling operation in bulk carriers conclusion on effectiveness of using developed design solutions for hatch covers when creating prospective bulk carriers.
