Stemming from a broader PhD project, this article argues that neoliberal post-feminist cultural sensibilities–entrenched in contemporary popular culture–about empowered, agentic and self-determining women, are regressive for the feminist advancement of gender-relational equality in the African context. To arrive at this conclusion, the central aim was to elucidate whether the gender-performative representations prioritised in the multimodal discourses of Afrobeats music videos are implicated in post-feminist sensibilities and if so, in what ways and to what effect? Given the continent’s richly diverse, yet largely heteropatriarchal, sociocultural formations, I argue that ideas about empowered, agentic and self-determining (black) African women are–based on the limited purview offered through the multimodal discourses of a small corpus of Afrobeats music videos–no more than sociocultural façades as opposed to gender-relational realities in our context. The article relied on a multimodal critical discourse analysis of a total of nine music videos drawn from the PhD project’s larger corpus of 25 Afrobeats music videos, their accompanying song lyrics, as well as a selection of YouTube viewer comments extracted from the analysed music videos. In critically exploring the gender-relational depictions prioritised in the analysed music videos, I argue for the consideration of what I am coining “misogyrom”; a gender-relational cultural sensibility which, in tandem with a post-feminist sensibility partly undergirding the multimodal discourses of these music videos, effectively veil this popular musical genre’s evidently sexist and misogynistic undertones that subvert potentialities of empowered, agentic and self-determining black African women.

This paper presents preliminary findings from a wider study into the form that political debate takes in Scottish and English/UK newspapers’ reporting of the 2001 and the 2005 UK Elections. The research project aims to contribute to the discussion regarding the role played by the Scottish press in political deliberation after devolution and compares its contribution to the electoral debate with that of newspapers bought in England. This paper explores the results of a content analysis of articles from daily Scottish and UK newspapers during the four weeks of each election campaign period. This reveals that, despite some differences, the overall picture of the coverage of major election issues is consistent. A selection of the coverage of taxation, the most mentioned reserved issue in the 2001 campaign, is subsequently analysed using critical discourse analysis, and the results suggest more distinction between the two sets of newspapers.

Language is an essential feature of communication for all poeple. It is utilized through various tools and media, and singing songs is one of the traditional forms of communication. Songs are usually written for particular reasons, messages, and purposes, and sometimes targeted for specific audience or listeners. Song lyrics usually contain various themes such as social and current issues and problems which the songwriter strives to share through expressions of his or her ideology, thoughts and feelings. This paper is aimed to find out the text analysis, social cognition and social context in the humanity song entitled We Shall Overcome through Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model. This model shows that the choice of words or the diction is cohesive and coherent and is able to communicate the general meaning of this humanity song. Furthermore, the social cognition in this humanity song is related with the current social context which involves the recent situation in Palestinine, where there is still in conflict with Israel.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine current research on self-advocacy and self-determination of autistic students in order to provide an overview of the research and to critically evaluate researcher’s methods of inclusivity of autistic people. Additionally, this paper will critically analyse the discourse of the current research to assess the extent of deficit, stigma and pathology discourse. Design/methodology/approach Research will be selected from a list of criteria which is to seek research that is inclusive of autistic people. The research will be analysed using elements of critical discourse analysis, critical disability studies and critical autism studies. The critical autism studies approach used in this paper is emancipatory to promote autistic scholarship, autistic inclusivity and autistic led research methods. Findings The result of this paper is that by prioritising, and including autistic individuals in the studies about them provides valuable educational insights and often challenges assumptions, stigmas and stereotypes of autistic individuals. Research limitations/implications The findings of the paper may be limited by the selection of literature reviewed and generalizability, therefore, researchers are encouraged to explore further. Practical implications This paper holds potential implications that question the consistency of current discourse and research into self-advocacy for autistic individuals in addition to providing effective research, teaching and support strategies based on insight. This paper also highlights some research that challenges assumptions of autistic individuals. Social implications This paper challenges assumptions and stigmas associated with autistic individuals and demonstrates the importance of self-advocacy and self-determination. This research transforms the paradigm of autism and education practice that has the potential to improve autistic individuals’ education and ultimately, improve their lives. Originality/value This research is important and valuable as there is limited research in this area. The potential of this research is that it can shift the broad perceptions of autism and make improvements in education and autistic individuals lives.

This article examines media representations of same-sex sexuality in Senegal, and analyses how same-sex sexuality has been covered in a selection of Senegalese newspapers since the early 2000s. Drawing on Stuart Hall’s perspective on the role of mass media and ideology and the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis, this article describes how discourses produced by selected Senegalese newspapers generate and circulate ideological meanings. This article intends to underline the ways in which Senegalese media have come to fabricate a certain image of gay and lesbian people, often portrayed as deviant, mad or abnormal.

Over the last decades, the strategic profile of the discourse with which wars are narrated has been reinforced. This discourse has also varied in the light of a recent – and alleged – peace culture permeating Western societies. Whereas the war discourse in Russia during the Second Russian-Chechen War has been widely studied, this has not been the case of the rhetoric of the Chechen Islamist guerrillas. The aim of this paper is to contribute to bridging this gap in the academic literature on the North Caucasus, employing to this end a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of a selection of texts posted by the Kavkaz Center (KC) news agency. On the basis of this analysis, it can be concluded that one of the main discursive strategies revolved around the construction of an “us” embodying the Chechen victims of the initial aggression in a conflict provoked by the Russian “other”.

During 2006 until 2007 there were plenty of songs that are lyrical about adultery or polygamy, in line also with the emergence of the phenomenon of polygamy and infidelity by some famous people ranging from businessmen, preachers, politicians, to academics. One of the most popular songs is a song titled “Jadikan Aku yang Kedua”. Surprisingly, although the title shows that this song legalized polygamy, the majority of listeners who request the song to be played in radio stations are women. The research reveals about the marginalization of women that is implicitly contained in a song lyrics. The research method used is critical discourse analysis with analytical techniques using the model of Norman Fairclough. This study uses substantive theoreticalframework such as hegemony, ideology, patriarchy, and feminism and the discourse analysis theory from Michael Foucault. The results showed that the Song is a discourse to marginalize women who occupy the first position, while for the second women or femme fatale, this song is empowering them. Song writer has the power to shape the ideology of consumer (listener) toward his patriarchal ideology. He wants to use his power to encourage the women to dare to become a femme fatale.

Pada Japan Pop atau J-Pop nama Utada Hikaru merupakan penyanyi pop dan pencipta lagu yang tidak asing lagi. Disamping itu termasuk bintang besar di Jepang. Sangat menarik apabila teks lagu dari penyanyi ini dianalisis melalui analisis wacana kritis (Anawa). Artikel ini bertujuan untuk memaparkan analisis teks lagu first love dan Prisoner of love oleh Utada Hikaru dan bagaimana unsur kognisi sosial dan konteks yang terdapat dalam kedua lagu tersebut. Metode yang dipergunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah studi kepustakaan (library research). Simpulan dari Analisis wacana kritis pada riset mini ini yaitu Tema pada kedua lagu kenangan dan kekaguman kepada orang yang dicintai. Sedang kognisi sosial lebih menekankan bahwa menikah muda bukan suatu halangan untuk berkarir, sedang konteks sosial kekaguman kepada penyanyi yang bilingual yaitu bisa berbahasa Jepang dan Bahasa Inggris.Keyword : Analisis wacana kritis, lirik lagu, kognisi sosial, konteks  AbstractThe song is something to entertain the listener, especially love songs. A famous Japan Pop, Utada Hikaru is a big star in Japan. It will be very interesting to analyze the song lyrics using critical discourse analysis. This study is aimed at explaining the analysis of song texts of Utada Hikaru’s songs, first love and prisoner and how the elements of social cognition and context existed in those songs. By using descriptive qualitative research, there were some conclusions taken. The conclusion of critical discourse analysis in this mini research is the theme on both songs of memories and admiration to loved ones. Medium social cognition more suppressed young married is not an obstacle to a career, is the social context of admiration for bilingual singers that can be watched Japan and English.Keywords: critical discourse analysis, song lyrics, social cognition, context

One of the primary functions of a translator is to mediate not only between languages but also between cultures. As ideology is one of the crucial cultural constraints, it is essential to teach students that selection of translation strategy is always either implicitly or explicitly affected by the translator's ideology. Thus, the main aim of this chapter is to illustrate the importance of introducing critical discourse analysis as a powerful tool for ideological analysis in the translation classroom. By understanding how social relations of power are exercised and negotiated in and through discourses, future translators will be able to better operate on different levels during text (re)production and translation of a message. The authors outline the course in which the students were first presented advertising slogans in English, which were later analyzed in the classroom.

The study examines the image of Islam and Pakistan post 9/11 scenario documented in Pakistani Urdu and English newspapers. Results are deduced by analyzing headlines while applying the CDA model projected by Fairclough (1989, 1995) with respect to vocabulary items, viewpoints, and newspapers' ideologies. The results from the study indicated that these two newspapers heavily rely on some selected lexical items to manipulate and control the belief system of the masses. It was shown from the data that Nawa-iWaqat, an Urdu newspaper, fervently utilized figurative language to influence the perception of its readers. It is seen from the analyzed data that the selection of words made by Urdu newspaper is mainly based on prejudice toward certain prominent social figures, politicians, and even toward world-renowned political figures and events. The collected data from the two newspapers and their critical discourse analysis indicated that daily 'Nawa-i-Waqt' gave abundant, sentimental coverage to the issues concerned. On the other hand, the daily 'Dawn' newspaper gave little but positive coverage to the issues of that time.
