The main purpose of this study was to examine the impact of different phosphorus (P) fertilizers and organic manures alone and in combination with Bacillus sp. MN-54 on growth, yield, nutrient uptake, chlorophyll (SPAD value) and crude proteins content of chickpea. The simple manure (SM), processed manure (PM), single super phosphate (SSP), and rock phosphate (RP) were applied individually and in different combinations to the soil in pots, and the chickpea seeds treated with Bacillus sp. MN-54 were sown in the selective pots. Results showed that individual use of SM, PM, SSP, RP, and strain MN-54 significantly increased (P ≤ 0.05) the nutrient uptake, growth, yield, and protein content of chickpea as compared to control treatments. While the combined use of SM or PM, SSP or RP, and MN-54 further enhanced this effect. Among different treatments, combined use of RP, PM and MN-54 proved the most effective treatment showing increase of 37.5 and 42.6% in shoot and root lengths, 43.4 and 38.3% in fresh and dry shoot weights, 36.1 and 36.5% in fresh and dry root weights, 45.8% in no. of pods, 43.6% in nodules counts, 16.0% in 100-grain weight and 31–36% nutrient uptake over control treatments. Our findings suggest that the co-addition of organic manures and P fertilizers along with plant growth promoting bacteria (i.e., Bacillus sp. MN-54) not only increases the growth and yield but also improves nodulation, nutrient uptake, and crude proteins content in chickpea.

Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is the most important and ancient pulse crop being traditionally grown during rabi season and cultivated mainly in semi-arid regions. The content of iron and zinc in the soil of Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS) is below the critical level. A field experiment to study the effect of iron and zinc nutrition on growth, yield and nutrient uptake by chickpea conducted in the vertisols of the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Vijayapur during rabi 2017-18. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with ten treatments and three replications. The treatments included RPP (Recommended package of practice) and application of iron @ 2, 4 and 6 kg ha-1 and zinc @ 2, 3 and 4 kg ha-1 in combinations along with RPP (RDF (Recommended dose of fertilizer) @ 10:25:00:: N : P2O5 : K2O kg ha-1). The results of the experiment revealed that, the application of iron and zinc in combinations resulted in significant increase in growth, yield and nutrient uptake by chickpea over RPP alone. Among the different treatments RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 4 kg Zn ha-1 was resulted in the maximum test weight (28.28 g), seed (2065.4 kg ha-1) and straw (1734.9 kg ha-1) yield. Similarly, higher protein content, uptake of nutrients (Fe and Zn) by the crop and residual iron and zinc status in soil were recorded due to the application of RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 4 kg Zn ha-1. These results were at par with the application of RPP + 6 kg Fe ha-1 + 3 kg Zn ha-1 and lower values were recorded in the treatment that received RPP alone. Finally it could be concluded that the application of fertilizers containing iron and zinc helpeds to improve crop yield, protein content and nutrient uptake by chickpea crop and residual soil fertility in terms of iron and zinc.

Objective: The inoculants, mainly nitrogen fixers and phosphate solubilizing microbes, have an influence on plant growth attributes. The current study was conducted to assess the fertilizing activity of A. chroocaccum and B. megaterium strains on growth, yield parameters and nutrient uptake of Sorghum bicolor. Methods: The isolation and identification of the nitrogen-fixing bacterium- A. chroocaccum and phosphate solubilizing microbe- B. megaterium and the growth and yield parameters of Sorghum bicolor as well as NPK uptake levels were studied. Results: A. chroocaccum and B. megaterium exhibited the proliferation of microbial population in soil by synergistic interaction with plants, and the application increased the availability of NPK in the soil after harvest of the crop. These beneficial inoculants are also known to help in the uptake of some other nutrients. The maximum beneficial aspects of the plant were noticed in the plants inoculated with 100% Recommended Dose of Fertilizer (RDF)+ A. chroocaccum+ B. megaterium, and the least was noticed in the control plants at all growth stages and at the time of harvest. Conclusion: From this study, it can be concluded that the beneficial effect of A. chroocaccum and B. megaterium is observed in sorghum crop with improved yield and nutrient uptake. Therefore, this species can be used extensively for future inoculation of the sorghum crop for better growth and development and for good returns in an ecological way.

The influence of organic manures in nutrient uptake and seed quality of sesame is not fully known. In this context, a study was conducted in northeastern Uganda in 2013 and 2014 short rains, and 2014 long rains to investigate the effect of organic manures on nutrient uptake and seed quality of sesame. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments comprised: control, 4 crop residues, 2 animal manures and combinations of 2 animal manures and 4 crop residues all applied at two rates of 3 and 6 t/ha. Poultry manure plus finger millet husks (6 t/ha) produced significantly the highest seed protein content (48.23%) and uptake of N (4.84%), P (0.66%) and K (1.86%) by sesame at 4 weeks after emergence. Poultry manure plus cowpea husks (6 t/ha) and poultry manure plus groundnut shells (3 t/ha) produced the highest total ash (8.71%) and sesame seed oil content (67.95%), respectively. The crop residue effect on seed crude protein content, seed total ash and seed oil content occurred in the order of finger millet > cowpea > groundnut > sorghum, finger millet > cowpea > sorghum > groundnut and groundnut > sorghum > cowpea > finger millet, respectively. This study has demonstrated that finger millet husks and groundnut shells effectively enhance protein and oil content of sesame than other crop residues, respectively. Poultry manure plus finger millet husks (3 t/ha) enhances sesame seed protein content than other treatments.

There is no alternative to phosphorus (P) in agriculture as it is second most important plant nutrient after nitrogen. Mineral P fertilizers are derived from rock phosphate (RP) which is finite, non-renewable and geographically restricted to a few countries, thus its shortage likely affects agriculture in near future as the world population is growing at a greater pace. This could increase P inputs in agriculture in order to meet rising food demands which may result in the depletion of RP reserves. Furthermore, P losses from farmlands in case of mineral P fertilizers also demands the sustainable use of P not only because of its finite resources but also the environmental concerns associated with P fertilization such as eutrophication. The present study was designed to formulate biochar-based P fertilizer that would help in the sustainable use of P fertilizer. Biochar(s) were prepared using wheat straw at 350–400 °C pyrolytic temperature followed by enrichment with Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) taking into account all possible combination of DAP to biochar on the w/w basis (0:100, 25:75, 50:50, 75:25 and 100:0). Enrichment was carried out using two different methods i.e., phosphorus enriched biochar (PEB1) by hot method and cold method (PEB2). An incubation experiment was performed to assess the impact of each biochar on selected properties of soil. The treatments were organized in factorial arrangement under complete randomized design (CRD) with three replications. Both the amendments were applied at rate of 1% of dry soil on a w/w basis. A significant increase in soil extractable P and total nitrogen (N) was recorded for the ratio 50:50 as compared to control as well of rest of treatments. Similarly, high organic contents were found for both PEB1 and PEB2 at the ratio 50:50. An incubation experiment was followed by pot trial using 50:50 for both PEB1 and PEB2 and split doses of recommended P were applied (0%, 25%, 50% and 100%) with a control under CRD with three replications using chickpea as test crop. Both PEB1 and PEB2 with 50% P have significantly improved crop growth, yield, nodulation, and plant physiological and chemical parameters as compared to a recommended dose of P alone. The result may imply that the integration of P-enriched biochar and chemical fertilizer could be an effective approach to improve chickpea production and soil properties.

A pot experiment was set up using completely randomized design (CRD) to compare the influences of different commonly available organic manures in the markets of Dhaka, Bangladesh on the growth parameters and nutrient contents in Mint plants (Mentha sp.). Eight different manures were used as treatments for the comparison, viz. ACI, Alo, Annopurna Vermicompost, Cow dung, Kazi, Mazim, Modern Vermicompost and Trichocompost GBD, along with a control, taking three replications of each treatment. After 2.5 months (75 days) the plants were harvested. Trichocompost GBD showed the highest average number of leaves (130.33 plant-1), plant height (27.67 cm plant-1), number of branches (11.00 plant-1) and number of stolons at harvest (1.67 plant-1). The maximum average single leaf area (2.01 cm2 plant-1) and fresh weight (1.68 g plant-1) were observed in Kazi. ACI was observed to have the highest dry weight (0.26 g plant-1), whereas cow dung had the longest root (8.57 cm plant-1). Nutrient accumulation in leaf and stem exhibited the highest N in ACI, highest P and K in Alo, and highest S in Kazi. Correlation analysis of the explored traits with nutrient concentration of plant shoots was performed to elucidate the impact of plant nutrient contents on the analysed parameters. J. Biodivers. Application of native PGPR as bio inoculant is an alternative sustainable agricultural practice to enhance crop productivity, grain quality, and soil fertility. In this view, a study was to examine the effect of either individual or consortium PGPR inoculation on growth, yield, and grain nutrient uptake of two teff varieties. The pot experiment was carried out in (CRD) three replication and 10 treatments. The PGPR inoculants used in this study were Pseudomonas fluorescens biotype G, Enterobacter cloacae ss disolvens, and Serratia marcescens ss marcescen and their consortium. Dukem and Magna varieties were used in this study. The results of the analysis of variance showed significant differences (P ≤ 0.001) among the treatment and most of the agronomic traits except number of fertile tillers and also significant different (P ≤ 0.01) for grain P and N uptake. The variety was significantly affected grain Mg, Zn and Fe uptake at 5 % probability level and did not significantly influence all agronomic traits of the two varieties. Furthermore, interaction effects of two factors (TM*VT) were significant differences (P ≤ 0.05) for plant height and panicle length. Individual treatments mean comparison results showed that inoculation of native PGPR consortium significantly affected most of the PGP traits at (P ≤ 0.05). The maximum traits like plant height (189cm), panicle length (66.7cm), shoot dry biomass (9.98g), root dry biomass (2.90g) and grain yield per plant (4.55g) were observed from Dz-01-196. It could be concluded that the consortium of native PGPR inoculants for plant growth, yield and grain nutrient uptake improvement performed better than their individual strain.
