Part tolerances and fixture layouts are two pivotal factors in the geometrical quality of a compliant assembly. The independent design and optimization of these factors for compliant assemblies have been thoroughly studied. However, this paper presents the dependency of these factors and, consequently, the demand for an integrated design of them. A method is developed in order to address this issue by utilizing compliant variation simulation tools and evolutionary optimization algorithms. Thereby, integrated and non-integrated optimization of the tolerances and fixture layouts are conducted for an industrial sample case. The objective of this optimization is defined as minimizing the production cost while fulfilling the geometrical requirements. The results evidence the superiority of the integrated approach to the non-integrated in terms of the production cost and geometrical quality of the assemblies.

The design of direct driven turbomachinery is an interdisciplinary task. Standard design procedures propose to split such systems into subcomponents and to design each one individually. This common procedure, however, tends to neglect the interactions between the different components leading to suboptimal solutions. The authors propose an approach based on the integrated philosophy for designing and optimizing gas bearing supported rotors. Based on the choice for herringbone grooved journal and spiral groove thrust bearings, the modeling procedure for predicting their properties and the linking to the rotordynamic behavior of a generic rotor supported on gas lubricated bearings is provided. The global model for gas bearing supported rotors is linked to a multiobjective optimizer for maximizing the dynamic stability and for minimizing the windage losses of the rotor and of the bearings. Two typical rotor layouts have been included in the optimization. The geometry of a proof of concept system, that has been designed previously using the fragmented component view, is represented as a comparison to the proposed integrated approach. It is shown that the integrated solution allows to reduce the windage losses by 25% or to increase the stability margin by 35%, emphasizing the advantage of the proposed integrated design tool.

Abstract A preeminent factor in the geometrical quality of a compliant sheet metal assembly is the fixture layout that is utilized to perform the assembly procedure. Despite the presence of a great number of studies about the optimization of assembly fixture layouts, there is not a comprehensive algorithm to optimize all design parameters of fixture layouts for compliant sheet metal assemblies. These parameters are the location and type of hole and slot in each part, the slot orientation, and the number and location of additional clamps. This paper presents a novel optimization method that optimizes all these parameters simultaneously to maximize the geometrical quality of the assemblies. To attain this goal, compliant variation simulations of the assemblies are utilized along with evolutionary optimization algorithms. The assembly springback and contacts between parts are considered in the simulations. After determining the optimal design parameters, the optimal positions of locators are fine-tuned in another stage of optimization. Besides, a top-down design procedure is proposed for applying this method to multi-station compliant assemblies. The presented method is applied to two industrial sample cases from the automotive industry. The results evidence a significant improvement of geometrical quality by utilizing the determined fixture layout from the presented method compared with the original fixture layouts of the sample cases.

Mecano-welding can efficiently produce cylinders used in various industries. The pyramidal three-roll bending process is commonly used to produce a cylinder with non-seamed gap. However, there is a planar zone near the front and rear ends. This planar zone can be seamed with a welding process. In this paper, a numerical model is proposed to simulate the roll bending process and the welding process so that the geometrical quality of the bent cylinders can be improved. Explicit and implicit solvers are applied to the numerical modeling by using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software. The numerical model can provide a useful tool for design and optimization of the Mecano-welding process.

This article is devoted to the application of an integrated approach in the study of the quality of life of the population of the North Ossetia. Aspects of the specifity of objective and subjective approaches are substantiated. The increasing importance of the concept of “quality of life” in the XXI century is indicated. A review of sociological studies of the level and quality of life in Russia, as well as a range of monographic works on the analyzed issues. The results of empirical sociological studies in 2014 and 2018 (a study of the quality and standard of living of the population of North Ossetia and a study of the social wellbeing of the population of North Ossetia using the methodology developed by Lapin N. I. and Belyaeva L. A.) are presented.

The evolution of Mobile Networks and Internet of Things (IoT) architectures allows one to rethink the way smart cities infrastructures are designed and managed, and solve a number of problems in terms of human mobility. The territories that adopt the sensoring era can take advantage of this disruptive technology to improve the quality of mobility of their citizens and the rationalization of their resources. However, with this rapid development of smart terminals and infrastructures, as well as the proliferation of diversified applications, even current networks may not be able to completely meet quickly rising human mobility demands. Thus, they are facing many challenges and to cope with these challenges, different standards and projects have been proposed so far. Accordingly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been utilized as a new paradigm for the design and optimization of mobile networks with a high level of intelligence. The objective of this work is to identify and discuss the challenges of mobile networks, alongside IoT and AI, to characterize smart human mobility and to discuss some workable solutions to these challenges. Finally, based on this discussion, we propose paths for future smart human mobility researches.

PurposeIntegrated healthcare is a central tenant of the NHS Long Term Plan (NHS, 2019). NICE in 2019 published guidelines; advising the integration of multidisciplinary professionals which may lead to an improvement in conservative treatment methods of pelvic organ prolapse. Therefore, current literature on the conservative treatments for pelvic organ prolapse needs to be reviewed to ascertain if an integrated approach would improve the symptoms and quality of life for women.Design/methodology/approachA systematic review of the literature between 2013 and 2018 was implemented. Papers included were written in English, peer-reviewed and consisted of treatments of pelvic organ prolapse in women. Papers containing surgical interventions, postpartum participants, reviews, evaluations, guidelines, follow-up studies, focusing on cost effectiveness, sexual function were excluded.FindingsSeven studies in total were included, and two overarching themes were identified: quality of life after treatment and the effect of conservative treatment on pelvic organ prolapse symptoms. The literature suggested that integrating care had a more positive outcome on pelvic organ symptoms and quality of life.Research limitations/implicationsTo develop a robust enhanced model of care for conservative treatment of pelvic organ prolapse through more mixed method or qualitative research, that incorporates integrative treatment methods with collaboration from multidisciplinary professionals.Practical implicationsThe practical implications of integrating the conservative management of pelvic organ prolapse is the communication between the multidisciplinary team must be exceptional to ensure everyone understands and agrees the treatment that is being provided to patient. Also, effective teamwork is important to ensure the patient receives the best care with input from the correct disciplines. The multi-professional team will need to have regular meetings to discuss and implement care plans for patients that might prove difficult to schedule due to differing commitments and priorities. This must be overcome to insure a successful and effective integrated approach to pelvic organ prolapse is delivered.Social implicationsThe social implications of integrating the professional approach to women's care of pelvic organ prolapse involves reducing the severity of the symptoms therefore, increasing the quality of life. This may result in the reduction of surgical intervention due to the patient being satisfied with the conservative management. Through integrating the management of the prolapse the patient will receive an accessible individualised care plan pathway that focuses on treating or reducing the impact of the symptoms that are bothersome to the patient whilst managing patient expectations. Patients will also, be reassured by the number of multi-disciplinary professionals involved in their care.Originality/valueGlobal integration of conservative treatments and multidisciplinary-professionals specialising in pelvic organ prolapse and pelvic floor dysfunction is needed.

Acupuncture in combination with antiretroviral therapies is a potentially useful treatment for HIV-related symptom relief in resource-poor settings. Traditional Chinese medicine has a long history of being used to enhance immune function. In the setting of HIV, Chinese traditional medicine allows for symptom treatment without adding extra medications to a complex drug regime. This paper provides details of a project at Mae On Hospital in rural northern Thailand where allopathic/conventional treatments are used in tandem with acupuncture. A preliminary evaluation of the project suggests that an integrated approach to symptom relief is viewed positively by respondents receiving acupuncture, though further studies are required to confirm the association between acupuncture and symptom relief. The project also demonstrates the feasibility of developing a cost-effective acupuncture programme using local healthcare staff.
