This study aimed at evaluating the effects of two coating application methods, spraying and dipping, on the quality of fresh-cut melons. An alginate-based coating containing both ascorbic and citric acid was applied at two concentrations (5% and 10%) with both methods on fresh-cut melon. The nutritional quality of the products was investigated during 11 days of storage at 10 °C. The suitability and adaptability of the applied coatings on the fruit were evaluated based on rheological and microstructural properties. Moisture, carotenoids, total polyphenols and ascorbic acid content were analyzed on melon samples during storage. Results showed that the coating solution applied by the dipping method and at the highest concentration (10%), allowed to better maintain some quality characteristics of fresh-cut melon, thanks also to the better coating homogeneity and higher thickness observed through microstructural analysis.

The growing demand for ready-to-eat fresh fruits has led to set-up appropriate strategies for preserving fruit quality and freshness of such commodities. To slow down the deterioration events such as respiration, moisture loss and enzymatic activity, ready-to-eat products should be protected with an edible film. A suitable coating should combine hydrophilic and hydrophobic features to ensure good mechanical and gas barrier properties. Alginate/essential oil nanoformulations, one with low and the other with high oil content, here proposed to protect apple pieces during storage, were first characterized through dynamic light scattering and rheology. The effect of the application of the nanoformulations on the quality parameters of apples stored at 4 °C was considered by evaluating weight loss, pH and titratable acidity, total phenols content and the fruit appearance during storage. Mainly on the basis of pH and titratable acididty variation, the nanoformulation with low oil content resulted eligible for preserving the quality of fresh-cut apple pieces during storage.

Two experiments were conducted at the research field and laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Salna, Gazipur, during April 2012 to September 2013 to find out the yield performance and nutritional quality of seven genotypes of okra in Bangladesh. The results revealed that the highest yield of okra obtained from BARI Dherosh1 (14.9 t/ha) and the lowest yield was obtained from Hybrid Raja (5.76 t/ha). The highest fruits per plant were recorded from BARI Dherosh1 (24.27 fruits/plant). The genotype Green Hybrid produced the lowest edible fruit per plant (10.27). Maximum virus infestation was recorded in genotype Hybrid Raja (100%) and the lowest in Arka Anamika (76.67%) as well as Arka Anamika performed well in many aspect such as yield (12.95 t/ha), fruits per plant (19.83), number of branches per plant (6). The highest content of free ascorbic acid was recorded in Nabik (3.35 mg/100gm) and the minimum ascorbic acid content was observed in Green Hybrid (1.987 mg/100g). Hybrid Moti had the maximum amount of ?-carotene (0.15 IU/100 g), while minimum amount of ?-carotene was found in IPSA Okra (0.09IU/100 g). The highest K content was observed in IPSA Okra (1.091%) and the lowest in Hybrid Raja (1.06%). The highest amount of Fe was observed in Hybrid Moti (139.60 ppm) and the lowest amount of Fe was observed in Green Hybrid (111.80 ppm). The present results revealed that the yield was maximum in BARI Dherosh1 while Hybrid Moti was superior in nutritive value.Bangladesh J. Agril. Res. 41(3): 541-554, September 2016

Apples are excellent sources of dietary phenolics, in particular flavonoids and chlorogenic acid, which are potent antioxidants that may play important roles in the prevention of chronic diseases. This study investigated the major phenolics profiles of apple fruit in relation to (1) the distribution among 8 Ontario-grown cultivars, (2) the different fruit parts, and (3) the effect of processing of fresh-cuts. In addition, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total phenols content (TPC) were measured in apples by spectrophotometric assays. Flavonoids and chlorogenic acid were quantified using HPLC/PDA. Vitamin C was quantified using HPLC/Fluorescence. TAC, TPC and flavonoids levels were the highest in Honey Crisp and Delicious, moderate in Idared, Spartan, Granny Smith, and Cortland, and the lowest in Crispin and Empire. Apple peel contained 2 to 10-fold higher TAC, TPC and total of 10 major phenolics than that of core and flesh indicating peeling of apples during processing could reduced significantly the nutritional quality of fresh-cut apples. Dihydrochalcone (phloridzin) and chlorogenic acid levels were 2 to 21-fold higher in apple core than skin and flesh. TAC levels and vitamin C contents could be increased up to 3-fold and 14 to 20-fold, respectively by the post-cut dipping treatment with an ascorbic acid-based antioxidant formula. The phenolic profiles of sliced apples were stable up to 21 days at 4°C.

The study was carried out in the research field and laboratory of the Department of Horticulture, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Gazipur-1706 during October 2011 to April 2012 to determine optimum level of nitrogen and spacing for improving the nutritional quality of broccoli. There were 15 treatments in the experiment comprising five levels of N viz., 0, 80, 120,160, and 200 kg/ha and three plant spacings viz., 60cm x 60cm, 60cm × 45cm, and 60cm × 30cm. The results revealed that the highest ascorbic acid content (50.38 mg/100g) was obtained from S60X30N0 and the highest b-carotene content (50.67 IU/100g) was found in S60X60N0. Maximum Ca (0.556%) was found in S60X60N0 whereas maximum Fe (159.002 ppm) was in S60X60N200.
