Aero-engine core compressor preliminary design strategy has been successfully applied to the advanced design of gas turbines compressors. However, few researchers have addressed the application of the aero-engine core compressor preliminary design strategy in the preliminary optimal design of industrial process compressors. Here we embedded the aero-engine core compressor preliminary design strategy into a preliminary optimal design method, in which six types of design parameters widely used to define the aero-engine compressor configuration, i.e., aspect ratio, solidity, reaction, rotation speed, outlet axial Mach number, and inlet radius ratio, were used as the design variables. The 4-stage, 5-stage, 6-stage, and 7-stage compressor configuration with the same overall design requirements for a large-scale air separation main compressor were preliminarily optimized by the developed method, in which the 4-stage design has a stage pressure rise level of current aero-engine core compressors, whereas the 7-stage design has that of current industrial process compressors. The optimized compressor configurations were then refined with the throughflow-based detailed design method and finally verified with computational fluid dynamic simulations. It is found that the developed method can optimize design efficiency and accurately predict aerodynamic performance of compressors in a few minutes. Several design guidelines for the advanced industrial process compressors were also identified. This work is of significance in extending aero-engine core compressor design strategy to the design of advanced industrial process compressors.

This paper presents a FEA method for vibration characteristics analysis of aero-engine compressor disc. An actual modal analysis of a certain aero-engine compressor disc is made based on this method. The first ten natural frequencies and modes of this compressor disc in fully constrained boundary condition and in free vibration condition are obtained respectively. And also, the vibration characteristics of each natural mode and its effect on compressor disc and other accessories are analyzed in depth. The analysis process and results presented in this paper can be references for further study on optimal design and vibration safety verification for this aero-engine compressor disc.

This paper introduces the FEA method for vibration characteristics analysis of a certain type of aero-engine compressor disc. Natural modal analysis for dynamical analysis is made and the results can be used as criterion of many dynamics characteristics and further analysis. In this paper, the natural modal of an aero-engine compressor disc with the joint hole fully constrained and in free status is calculated respectively. And the first ten natural frequencies and mode shapes are obtained. Also, vibration characteristics of each natural modal and the corresponding influence on the compressor disc and other structure are discussed. The analysis method and results in this paper can be used for further study on optimal design and vibration safety verification for the compressor disc system.

The article discusses methods for optimizing the design of the Neutron Converter research plant design with parameters that are most suitable for a particular consumer. 38 similar plant structures with different materials and sources were calculated, on the basis of which the most optimal options were found. As part of the interaction between OKBM Afrikantov JSC and the Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R. E. Alekseev, the Neutron Converter research plant was designed and assembled. The universal neutron converter is a device for converting a stream of fast neutrons emitted by isotopic sources into a "standardized" value of flux density with known parameters in the volume of the central part of the product, which is the working part of the universal neutron converter. To supply neutron converters to other customer organizations (universities, research organizations and collective centers), it is necessary to take into account the experience of operating an existing facility, as well as rationalize the design process of each specific instance in accordance with the requirements of the customer.

Rotodynamic multiphase pumps are usually equipped with many compression units to provide sufficient boosting pressure for the transportation of production fluid in gas oil field. It is a challenge to maintain pump performance while flow parameters in each stage vary due to the compressibility of gas-liquid phase. In this article, a stage-by-stage design method is proposed to improve the boosting capability of a multiphase pump. Variations of flow parameters in each stage are investigated based on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation. Available methods to determinate main impeller geometry parameters of impeller are discussed. The stage-by-stage design method is applied on a five-stage multiphase pump when the inlet gas volume fraction (GVF) are 30% and 50% separately. The second stage is modified base on its corresponding inlet flow parameters when inlet GVF is 30% while the second and third stage are modified when inlet GVF is 50%. Flow parameters, pressure distribution and velocity distribution are compared between the original pump and modified pump. Differential pressure of the modified pump increases by 53.72 kPa and 58.57 kPa respectively when inlet GVFs are 30% and 50%. The feasibility of the stage-by-stage design method is verified through the comparison results.

Ceramic tile production is an industrial process where energy efficiency management is crucial, given the high amount of energy (electrical and thermal) required by the production cycle. This study presents the preliminary results of a research project aimed at defining the benefits of using combined heat and power (CHP) systems in the ceramic sector. Data collected from ten CHP installations allowed us to outline the average characteristics of prime movers, and to quantify the contribution of CHP thermal energy supporting the dryer process. The electric size of the installed CHP units resulted in being between 3.4 MW and 4.9 MW, with an average value of 4 MW. Data revealed that when the goal is to maximize the generation of electricity for self-consumption, internal combustion engines are the preferred choice due to higher conversion efficiency. In contrast, gas turbines allowed us to minimize the consumption of natural gas input to the spray dryer. Indeed, the fraction of the dryer thermal demand (between 600–950 kcal/kgH2O), covered by CHP discharged heat, is strictly dependent on the type of prime mover installed: lower values, in the range of 30–45%, are characteristic of combustion engines, whereas the use of gas turbines can contribute up to 77% of the process’s total consumption.

Under high gravity loads, steel double-beam floor systems need to be reinforced by beam-end concrete panels to reduce the material quantity since rotational constraints from the concrete panel can decrease the moment demand by inducing a negative moment at the ends of the beams. However, the optimal design process for the material quantity of steel beams requires a time-consuming iterative analysis for the entire floor system while especially keeping in consideration the rotational constraints in composite connections between the concrete panel and steel beams. This study aimed to develop an optimal design method with the LM (Length-Moment) index for the steel double-beam floor system to minimize material quantity without the iterative design process. The LM index is an indicator that can select a minimum cross-section of the steel beams in consideration of the flexural strength by lateral-torsional buckling. To verify the proposed design method, the material quantities between the proposed and code-based design methods were compared at various gravity loads. The proposed design method successfully optimized the material quantity of the steel double-beam floor systems without the iterative analysis by simply choosing the LM index of the steel beams that can minimize objective function while satisfying the safety-related constraint conditions. In particular, under the high gravity loads, the proposed design method was superb at providing a quantity-optimized design option. Thus, the proposed optimal design method can be an alternative for designing the steel double-beam floor system.

The fluid–structure interaction (FSI) effect has a significant impact on the static and dynamic performance of aerostatic spindles, which should be fully considered when developing a new product. To enhance the overall performance of aerostatic spindles, a two-round optimization design method for aerostatic spindles considering the FSI effect is proposed in this article. An aerostatic spindle is optimized to elaborate the design procedure of the proposed method. In the first-round design, the geometrical parameters of the aerostatic bearing were optimized to improve its stiffness. Then, the key structural dimension of the aerostatic spindle is optimized in the second-round design to improve the natural frequency of the spindle. Finally, optimal design parameters are acquired and experimentally verified. This research guides the optimal design of aerostatic spindles considering the FSI effect.
