Estimating the bearing capacity of piles is an essential point when seeking for safe and economic geotechnical structures. However, the traditional methods employed in this estimation are time-consuming and costly. The current study aims at elaborating a new alternative model for predicting the pile-bearing capacity based on eleven new advanced machine-learning methods in order to overcome these limitations. The modeling phase used a database of 100 samples collected from different countries. Additionally, eight relevant factors were selected in the input layer based on the literature recommendations. The optimal inputs were modeled using the machine-learning methods and their performance was assessed through six performance measures using a K-fold cross-validation approach. The comparative study proved the effectiveness of the DNN model, which displayed a higher performance in predicting the pile-bearing capacity. This elaborated model provided the optimal prediction, i.e., the closest to the experimental values, compared to the other models and formulae proposed by previous studies. Finally, a reliable and easy-to-use graphical interface was generated, namely “BeaCa2021”. This will be very helpful for researchers and civil engineers when estimating the pile-bearing capacity, with the advantage of saving time and money.

Recently, machine learning techniques have been widely applied in discriminative studies of schizophrenia (SZ) patients with multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, the effects of brain atlases and machine learning methods remain largely unknown. In this study, we collected MRI data for 61 first-episode SZ patients (FESZ), 79 chronic SZ patients (CSZ) and 205 normal controls (NC) and calculated 4 MRI measurements, including regional gray matter volume (GMV), regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and degree centrality. We systematically analyzed the performance of two classifications (SZ vs NC; FESZ vs CSZ) based on the combinations of three brain atlases, five classifiers, two cross validation methods and 3 dimensionality reduction algorithms. Our results showed that the groupwise whole-brain atlas with 268 ROIs outperformed the other two brain atlases. In addition, the leave-one-out cross validation was the best cross validation method to select the best hyperparameter set, but the classification performances by different classifiers and dimensionality reduction algorithms were quite similar. Importantly, the contributions of input features to both classifications were higher with the GMV and ReHo features of brain regions in the prefrontal and temporal gyri. Furthermore, an ensemble learning method was performed to establish an integrated model, in which classification performance was improved. Taken together, these findings indicated the effects of these factors in constructing effective classifiers for psychiatric diseases and showed that the integrated model has the potential to improve the clinical diagnosis and treatment evaluation of SZ.

Abstract Recent emerging hybrid technology of positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance (PET/MR) imaging has generated a great need for an accurate MR image-based PET attenuation correction. MR image segmentation, as a robust and simple method for PET attenuation correction, has been clinically adopted in commercial PET/MR scanners. The general approach in this method is to segment the MR image into different tissue types, each assigned an attenuation constant as in an X-ray CT image. Machine learning techniques such as clustering, classification and deep networks are extensively used for brain MR image segmentation. However, only limited work has been reported on using deep learning in brain PET attenuation correction. In addition, there is a lack of clinical evaluation of machine learning methods in this application. The aim of this review is to study the use of machine learning methods for MR image segmentation and its application in attenuation correction for PET brain imaging. Furthermore, challenges and future opportunities in MR image-based PET attenuation correction are discussed.

Sensory evaluation plays an important role in the food and consumer goods industry. In recent years, the application of machine learning techniques to support food sensory evaluation has become popular. Many different machine learning methods have been applied and produced positive results in this field. In this article, the authors propose a new method to support sensory evaluation on multiple criteria based on the use of a correlation-based feature selection technique, combined with machine learning methods such as linear regression, multilayer perceptron, support vector machine, and random forest. Experimental results are based on considering the correlation between physicochemical components and sensory factors on the Saigon beer dataset.

Soft robots have been extensively researched due to their flexible, deformable, and adaptive characteristics. However, compared to rigid robots, soft robots have issues in modeling, calibration, and control in that the innate characteristics of the soft materials can cause complex behaviors due to non-linearity and hysteresis. To overcome these limitations, recent studies have applied various approaches based on machine learning. This paper presents existing machine learning techniques in the soft robotic fields and categorizes the implementation of machine learning approaches in different soft robotic applications, which include soft sensors, soft actuators, and applications such as soft wearable robots. An analysis of the trends of different machine learning approaches with respect to different types of soft robot applications is presented; in addition to the current limitations in the research field, followed by a summary of the existing machine learning methods for soft robots.

Machine learning methods enable the electronic nose (E-Nose) for precise odor identification with both qualitative and quantitative analysis. Advanced machine learning methods are crucial for the E-Nose to gain high performance and strengthen its capability in many applications, including robotics, food engineering, environment monitoring, and medical diagnosis. Recently, many machine learning techniques have been studied, developed, and integrated into feature extraction, modeling, and gas sensor drift compensation. The purpose of feature extraction is to keep robust pattern information in raw signals while removing redundancy and noise. With the extracted feature, a proper modeling method can effectively use the information for prediction. In addition, drift compensation is adopted to relieve the model accuracy degradation due to the gas sensor drifting. These recent advances have significantly promoted the prediction accuracy and stability of the E-Nose. This review is engaged to provide a summary of recent progress in advanced machine learning methods in E-Nose technologies and give an insight into new research directions in feature extraction, modeling, and sensor drift compensation.

Japanese is one of the most difficult languages to understand and read. Japanese writing that does not use the alphabet is the reason for the difficulty of the Japanese language to read. There are three types of Japanese, namely kanji, katakana, and hiragana. Hiragana letters are the most commonly used type of writing. In addition, hiragana has a cursive nature, so each person's writing will be different. Machine learning methods can be used to read Japanese letters by recognizing the image of the letters. The Japanese letters that are used in this study are hiragana vowels. This study focuses on conducting a comparative study of machine learning methods for the image classification of Japanese letters. The machine learning methods that were successfully compared are Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and K-Nearest Neighbor. The results of the comparative study show that the K-Nearest Neighbor method is the best method for image classification of hiragana vowels. K-Nearest Neighbor gets an accuracy of 89.4% with a low error rate.

Quora, an online question-answering platform has a lot of duplicate questions i.e. questions that convey the same meaning. Since it is open to all users, anyone can pose a question any number of times this increases the count of duplicate questions. This paper uses a dataset comprising of question pairs (taken from the Quora website) in different columns with an indication of whether the pair of questions are duplicates or not. Traditional comparison methods like Sequence matcher perform a letter by letter comparison without understanding the contextual information, hence they give lower accuracy. Machine learning methods predict the similarity using features extracted from the context. Both the traditional methods as well as the machine learning methods were compared in this study. The features for the machine learning methods are extracted using the Bag of Words models- Count-Vectorizer and TFIDF-Vectorizer. Among the traditional comparison methods, Sequence matcher gave the highest accuracy of 65.29%. Among the machine learning methods XGBoost gave the highest accuracy, 80.89% when Count-Vectorizer is used and 80.12% when TFIDF-Vectorizer is used.

Abstract The quality of potato tubers is dependent on several attributes been maintained at appropriate levels during storage. One of these attributes is sprouting activity that is initiated from meristematic regions of the tubers (eyes). Sprouting activity is a major problem that contributes to reduced shelf life and elevated sugar content, which affects the marketability of seed tubers as well as fried products. This study compared the capabilities of three different optical systems (1: visible/near-infrared (Vis/NIR) interactance spectroscopy, 2: Vis/NIR hyperspectral imaging, 3: NIR transmittance) and machine learning methods to detect sprouting activity in potatoes based on the primordial leaf count (LC). The study was conducted on Frito Lay 1879 and Russet Norkotah cultivars stored at different temperatures and classification models were developed that considered both cultivars combined and classified the tubers as having either high or low sprouting activity. Measurements were performed on whole tubers and sliced samples to see the effect this would have on identifying sprouting activity. Sequential forward selection was applied for wavelength selection and the classification was carried out using K-nearest neighbor, partial least squares discriminant analysis, and soft independent modeling class analogy. The highest classification accuracy values obtained by the hyperspectral imaging system and was 87.5% and 90% for sliced and whole samples, respectively. Data fusion did not show classification improvement for whole tubers, whereas a 7.5% classification accuracy increase was illustrated for sliced samples. By investigating different optical techniques and machine learning methods, this study provides a first step toward developing a handheld optical device for early detection of sprouting activity, enabling advanced aid potato storage management.

In this article we present relations between complex business processes and machine learning techniques. The processes considered here are mostly related to planning. Planning takes place in preparing many decisions and often it is encountered with a rapidly changing context that constitutes an open world. The underlying structure and preconditions of the processes is quite often not known and hence the processes are regarded as stochastic. One can only observe the processes. Such observations deliver data and these data contain some knowledge about the processes in a hidden form. As a consequence, machine learning methods are involved here. The idea is to give the business persons an overview of quite different machine learning techniques so that they can select suitable ones. We provide a number of examples for business processes that we use for illustrations.
