It is important and difficult to improve the tensile strength of backfill material to ensure the stability of goafs. In this study, rice straw (RS) in fiber form is used to improve the tensile properties of cemented paste backfill (CPB). An orthogonal experiment was designed, Brazilian indirect tensile strength tests were conducted to test the tensile performance of RS fiber-reinforced cemented paste backfill (RSCPB) under different fiber content (1, 2, 3 kg/m3) and fiber length (0.8~1, 1~3, 3~5 cm), and the microstructure of RSCPB was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that, compared with the conventional cemented paste backfill (CCPB), the increase in tensile strength of RSCPB ranged from 115.38% to 300.00% at 3 days curing age, 40.91% to 346.15% at 7 days, and −38.10% to 28.00% at 28 days., and the strain was slightly reduced during the curing period. The tensile strength, strain, and percentage increase of the RSCPB compared to the CCBP did not show a monotonic pattern of variation with the RS fiber content and length during the curing period. The RSCPB samples fractured under peak stress, showing obvious brittle failure. In addition, sulfate generated from S2− in the tailings inhibits the hydration reaction, and generates swelling products that form weak structural surfaces, which, in turn, lead to a 28-day tensile strength and strain of RSCPB lower than those at 7 days.

Banana fiber (BF) was utilized as a reinforcing filler for natural rubber (NR). BF/NR composites containing banana fiber contents of 5, 10, and 15 parts per hundred parts of rubber (phr) were mixed on a two-roll mill machine. The hardness, tensile properties of BF/NR composites were studied. It was found that the hardness and moduli of BF/NR composites are higher than that of NR. Despite tensile strength and strain at break of BF/NR composite lower than NR. Moreover, hardness and moduli of BF/NR composites increased, while tensile strength and strain at break decreased with the increase in banana fiber content. Thus, banana fiber exhibited improvement in the stiffness significantly of NR composites

Cemented paste backfill containing coal gangue and fly ash (CGFACPB) is an emerging backfill technique for coal mines that allows environmentally hazardous coal gangue and fly ash to be reused in the underground goaf. Meanwhile, CGFACPB can provide an efficient ground support and reduce the surface subsidence. Due to the difference of consolidation environment between the laboratory and the field, the mechanical properties of the cemented paste backfill vary significantly. In this paper, the core specimens were collected from an underground coal mine where the CGFACPB was used for coal mining, and the mechanical properties of the collected specimens were investigated. The cores were obtained from the underground coal mine, and then the standard cylinders or discs were prepared in laboratory. The uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Young’s modulus, and Poisson’s ratio were determined by the compression tests, and the tensile strength was achieved by the Brazilian test. Then the internal friction angle and cohesion were calculated using the improved Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion. The results showed the development of UCS can be divided into four stages, and the final long-term stable value was about 5.1 MPa. The development of Young’s modulus had similar trend. Young’s modulus had a range from 550 MPa to 750 MPa and the mean value of 675 MPa. Poisson’s ratio gradually increased with the underground curing duration and eventually approached the stable value of 0.18. The failure type of compression samples was mainly single-sided shear failure. The development of tensile strength can be divided into two stages, and the stable value of the tensile strength was about 1.05 MPa. The development of cohesion can be divided into four stages, and the stable value was about 1.75 MPa. The stable value of the internal friction angle was about 25°. This study can provide significant references for not only the long-term stability evaluation of CGFACPB in the field but also the design of optimal recipe of the cemented paste backfill (CPB).

The object of this work is to study and predict the tensile properties (tensile strength, elastic modulus, and elongation at break) of ternary nanocomposites based on epoxy/glass fiber/nanosilica using the fuzzy logic (FL). Two factors in three levels including glass fiber at 0, 5, and 10 wt% and nanosilica at 0, 0.5, and 1 wt% were chosen for adding to an epoxy matrix. From FL surfaces, it was found that the glass fiber content had a main role in the tensile properties of nanocomposites. The high levels of glass fiber content led to a significant increase in the elastic modulus and generally, the presence of glass fiber decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break. Also, addition of the nanosilica content resulted in an increased elastic modulus but decreased the elongation at break of nanocomposites. Finally, an FL model was obtained for each tensile property.

The tailings and rice straw are waste by-products, and the storage of tailings on the ground and the burning of rice straws will seriously damage the ecological environment. In this study, the effect of different contents of alkalized rice straw (ARS; rice straw was alkalized with 4% NaOH solution) on the mechanical properties and microstructure of cemented tailings backfill (CTB; ARSCTB) was studied through uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests. The results indicated that 1) the UCS of ARSCTB could be improved by ARS. However, with the increase in the ARS content from 0.1 to 0.4 wt%, the UCS showed a monotonous decreasing trend. The UCS improvement effect was best when the ARS content was 0.1 wt%, and at 7, 14, and 28 days curing ages, the UCS increased rate was 6.0, 8.3, 14.7% respectively. 2) The tensile strength of ARSCTB was generally higher than that of CTB and positively correlated with the ARS content. The tensile strength increase rate was 24.1–34.2% at 28 days curing age. 3) The SEM test indicated that the ARS was wrapped by cement hydration products, which improves its connection with the ARSCTB matrix. ARS performed a bridging role, inhibited cracks propagation, and provided drag or pulling force for the block that is about to fall off. Therefore, the mechanical properties of ARSCTB were enhanced. However, under high ARS content, the inhibition of ARS on hydration reaction and the overlap between ARS were not conducive to the improvement of the UCS of ARSCTB. 4) The post-peak residual strength and integrity effect of ARSCTB were greater. It is recommended to add 0.1–0.2 wt% ARS to the backfill with high compressive strength requirements such as the empty field subsequent filling mining method and the artificial pillar. 0.3–0.4 wt% ARS is incorporated into backfill with high tensile strength requirements such as high-stage filling with lateral exposure and artificial roof. This study further makes up for the blank of the application of plant fiber in the field of mine filling and helps to improve the mechanical properties of backfill through low-cost materials.

Blast furnace slag was used as the main raw material to prepare the alkali activated slag (AAS), a low-carbon binder, for cemented paste backfill (CPB). The optimum parameters for preparing the AAS binders using an orthogonal experiment were obtained. Under the optimum conditions (NaOH content was 3 wt. %, Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) content was 7 wt. %, and gypsum dosage was 4 wt. %), the 28 days compressive strength of the binder was 29.55 MPa. The flow ability of the fresh CPB slurry decreased with solid content due to the increased yield stress, while the flow ability increased when rising the binder dosage. A predictive model for the compressive strength of CPB samples was reached through multivariate analysis and the R2 values were higher than 0.9. Sensitivity analysis showed that the solid content is the most important parameter which influences on the development of the CPB strength with a correlation coefficient of 0.826. From the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) tests, the leaching concentrations of Pb and Cd were below the threshold. As a result, the AAS has potential application as an alternative binder and cemented paste backfill.

In this paper, an orthogonal experiment of 3 factors and 3 levels was firstly designed to prepare PAN pre-oxidised fibre felts with good thermal insulation properties; the range method was used to analyse the result of the orthogonal experiment, and finally the tensile properties and thermal stability were tested. Finally, pre-oxidised fibre felt composites for the coating of silica aerogel were prepared using the coating process to compound silica aerogel on re-oxidised fibre felts. Firstly, the influence of the content of silica aerogel on the heat insulation performance of the coated composite materials was analysed, and then a test of the coefficient of thermal conductivity, an experiment on the back temperature, and characterisations of the tensile properties and thermal stability of the composite coating of pre-oxidised fibre felt composites of the coating of silica aerogel were carried out. Results showed that through analysis of the orthogonal experiment, we can state that the best preparation process of pre-oxidised fibre needled felts was as follows: needle number – 2, needle depth – 8 mm, and needle frequency – 140 times/min. The transverse tensile strength of PAN pre-oxidised fibre needled felts prepared by crossly webbing of PAN pre-oxidised fibres was superior to the longitudinal tensile strength; thermogravimetric analysis showed that the pre-oxidised fibre needled felts had excellent thermal stability. The coefficient of thermal conductivity of the aerogel coating of the composites firstly decreased and then increased with an increase in the content of aerogel. Coated composites had the lowest coefficient of thermal conductivity when the aerogel content was 4% wt. At temperatures of 100 °C, 150 °C and 200 °C, the heating rate of the transient-state back temperature and the steady-state average temperature were both the lowest when the aerogel content was 6% wt.

In this paper, a practical reactive powder concrete mixture ratio is created on the basis of an orthogonal experiment. Previous studies have combined the compressive and splitting tensile strengths of four categories of reactive powder concrete (RPC) for major materials. These categories include water/binder ratio, silica fume volume content, sand/binder ratio, and dosage of fly ash volume. The optimal mixing proportion of each factor was determined by analyzing the compressive strength of the RPC matrix. For this purpose, steel fiber was used as a reinforcing agent. The compressive and splitting tensile strength test results of steel fiber RPC were analyzed by comparing compound, standard, and natural curing. This was conducted to explore the improvement effect of different steel fiber contents on compressive performance, especially tensile strength of the RPC matrix. According to the results, the optimal steel fiber content was found to be 4% under the three curing conditions. The effect of compound curing on early strength was found to be greater in RPC than by natural or standard curing. However, the effect of late improvement is not obvious. Although standard curing is slightly stronger than natural curing, the performance under the latter can still meet engineering requirements.
