Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterized by persistent widespread pain that negatively affects the quality of life of patients. The WNT/β-catenin signaling pathway seems to be involved in central sensitization and different pain states. The objective of this study was to investigate the beneficial effects of a new compound called Hidrox® (HD), containing 40–50% hydroxytyrosol, in counteracting the pain associated with FM. An FM-like model was induced in rats by subcutaneous injections of reserpine (1 mg/kg) for three consecutive days. Later, HD (10 mg/kg) was administered orally to the animals for seven days. Reserpine injections induced WNT/β-catenin pathway activation, release of pro-inflammatory mediators as well as a significant increase in oxidative stress. Daily treatment with HD was able to modulate the WNT/β-catenin and Nrf2 pathways and consequently attenuate the behavioral deficits and microglia activation induced by reserpine injection. These results indicate that nutritional consumption of HD can be considered as a new therapeutic approach for human FM.

Current research on phytochemicals is mainly focused on novel phenolic and polyphenolic compounds expressing their potential as therapeutic agents in various diseases like cancer, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, oxidative stress-related diseases, as well as their properties to inhibit the growth and proliferation of infectious agents. Among the human physiological disorders, one of the most severe endocrine metabolic diseases is Diabetes mellitus which is a clinical disease distinguished by a deficit in the production of insulin or resistance to the action of insulin. Globally, diabetes is an increasing health concern which is now emerging as an epidemic. About 700-800 plants are exhibiting anti-diabetic activity that has been studied. As far as nanotechnology in diabetes research is concerned, it has made possible the buildout of novel glucose measurement as well as insulin delivery modalities that possess the potential to excellently enhance the quality of life of the diabetic patient.

The beneficial effects of wooded areas in terms of microclimate - air temperature and humidity have always been inherent in improving the population’s quality of life. In this sense, the objective of this research was to carry out a quantitative study on the influence of urban afforestation on the microclimate of urban centers, analyzing the differences in temperature and humidity of the air in two locations in the central region of the municipality of Mogi Guaçu-SP with similar characteristics of area, highlighing the number of tree units, as well as to verify the perception of 60 scholars from the first to the fourth period of the Physical Education course of the FMG College, Mogi Guaçu-SP, regarding the benefits of this vegetation to the resident population. The role of tree planting in reducing heat and sunshine in the urban environment, thermal comfort and evapotranspiration with increased air humidity is well established, thus playing an important role in improving the environmental conditions of cities, favoring the practice of physical activities and Quality of life of its inhabitants. Keywords: Microclimate. This article aims to summarize the literature on the role of physical activity in cancer patients and to propose exercise programs based on studies and recommendations. Medical advances with improved early diagnosis and treatment have increased the number of cancer survivors. At the same time, the quality of life of these patients must also be improved. In the different stages of the disease physical activity has an important role to play with its beneficial effects on fatigue, physical condition, mood etc. Collaboration between health system actors and patient education are the key to success in this multi-disciplinary care.

Palliative care is an interdisciplinary care to relieve suffering and improve quality of life for patients and their families. The development of effective combination antiretroviral therapy has transformed HIV from a terminal to a chronic condition, with patients living longer but also experiencing more extensive symptoms that significantly impact quality of life. As a result, the role of palliative care has evolved to ameliorating distressing symptoms including pain while at the same time offering psychosocial and spiritual support for patients and families and preparing them for a dignified death. This chapter discusses some of the challenges and symptoms that patients and families encounter as they face this life-limiting disease.
