This editorial aims to introduce the themes and approaches covered in this special issue on education, communication, and decision-making on renewable and sustainable energy. At first, I discuss the themes and topics that have informed the creation of this special issue. Then, I provide an overview of the content of each paper that is included on the special issue. Additionally, this editorial provides a solid background on the relationships between the factors affecting decision-making on renewable energy sources as well as on the degree of influence education and communication takes part in the attitudes of the public towards renewable energy sources.

Energy security and stability are currently the main issues throughout the world. Applied research is carried out all over the world in order to increase a share of renewable energy sources in the overall task of energy generation. In near future environmentally friendly energy sources should be found that will enable the mankind to cover its energy needs. Renewable energy sources are currently offered worldwide as an environmentally friendly and acceptable solution; however, one may always wonder whether it is realistic to expect such energy sources to be developed at a level sufficient to meet the mankind’s ever increasing energy needs. This caution is caused by the following facts associated with the renewable energy sources available today: the wind energy is not everywhere available in sufficient quantities, solar energy is not sufficiently used, hydropower (we refer to small hydro power plants), is not big enough for this quantity of energy, geothermal energy can be optimally used only at places where thermal energy from the inner core of the Earth is near the surface, tidal energy (energy of the waves) has great potentials but is very little used due to its scarcity and non-accessibility, bioenergy, as a substitute for conventional fossil fuels, is not completely environmentally friendly or acceptable due to the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. On the other hand, without implementing the adequate policies in the energy sector operation, it is not possible to have any industrial, economic or social progress in the world. Energy security and stability are only one part in achieving the ultimate goals: sustainable economy, clean environment, high standard of living, prosperity and health of the population. In the light of all the above, the paper will investigate the state and perspective of renewable energy sources with a special emphasis on the potential of solar energy.

The integration of renewable energy sources in modern society has been given priority as these sources are regarded environmentally friendly. However, the variability of natural energy sources, combined with that of energy consumption, demands a different management of the energy system. In this work, we investigate the uncertainty of all variables combined, in order to take this variability into account in energy management.

Acknowledgement: This research is conducted within the frame of the undergraduate course "Stochastic Methods" of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). The School of Civil Engineering of NTUA provided moral support for the participation of the students in the Assembly.

The use of renewable energy sources (RESs) is a need of global society. This editorial, and its associated Special Issue “Grid-Connected Renewable Energy Sources”, offer a compilation of some of the recent advances in the analysis of current power systems composed after the high penetration of distributed generation (DG) with different RESs. The focus is on both new control configurations and novel methodologies for the optimal placement and sizing of DG. The eleven accepted papers certainly provide a good contribution to control deployments and methodologies for the allocation and sizing of DG.

Regarding development in the request and utilization of vitality. India is developing exponentially. With the request of spotless and environmentally friendly power vitality, it is important to tackle the tremendous potential from the sustainable power source part. With the GOI strategy and rules, around nine level of the aggregate introduced limit originates from the inexhaustible sources. With the expanded to the framework and observed to keep up the recurrence and members in the age administration framework. Given the vulnerability and inconstancy in the yield of generator, it is a noteworthy test to keep up the matrix with this vacillation. Under this viewpoint, this paper underscores the technique to address the difficulties in incorporating the power from sustainable power sources. Quantum of wind vitality is corresponded with the breeze speed and heading, shrewd estimate motor is embraced to lessen the uncertainly.
