A new tetradentate Schiff base (SB), (E)-4-fluoro-2-(1-((2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethyl)imino)ethyl)phenol, was synthesized from condensation of 2-(1-piperazinyl)ethylamine and 5-fluoro-2-hydroxyacetophenone. This ligand was coordinated with three copper(II) salts (CuCl2, CuBr2 and Cu(NO3)2⸱3H2O) separately, giving rise to new neutral water-soluble Cu(II)/ƞ4-NNNO complexes (1–3). The new materials were fully characterized by standard spectroscopic, elemental, thermal, electronic, absorption, and fluorescence analyses. The chromotropism investigation of the aqueous solutions of the complexes revealed notable outcomes. A turn off-on halochromism effect was observed, both in the acidic and basic mediums. The green-colored solution was changed to colorless (off) upon the addition of HCl, while the initial green color was reversibly restored (on) after the addition of NaOH. On the other hand, bathochromic solvatochromism shifts were noticed in various solvents. Interestingly, complex 2 displayed a remarkable blue fluorescence shift (Δλ = 90 nm) when compared to its SB ligand. The oxidation capability of the three complexes was successfully demonstrated for the conversion of o-catechol to o-benzoquinone in aqueous solutions and in the presence of H2O2, an environmentally friendly oxidant, under mild reaction conditions.

Starting with the controversial esoteric employment of audio recordings by followers of the charismatic Muslim preacher Sharif Haidara in Mali, the article explores the dynamics emerging at the interface of different technologies and techniques employed by those engaging the realm of the Divine. I focus attention on the “border zone” between, on the one hand, techniques for appropriating scriptures based on long-standing religious conventions, and, on the other, audio recording technologies, whose adoption not yet established authoritative and standardized forms of practice, thereby generating insecurities and becoming the subject of heated debate. I argue that “recyclage” aptly describes the dynamics of this “border zone” because it captures the ways conventional techniques of accessing the Divine are reassessed and reemployed, by integrating new materials and rituals. Historically, appropriations of the Qur’an for esoteric purposes have been widespread in Muslim West Africa. These esoteric appropriations are at the basis of the considerable continuities, overlaps and crossovers, between scripture-related esoteric practices on one side, and the treatment by Sharif Haidara’s followers of audio taped sermons as vessels of his spiritual power, on the other.

The effect of ionized aqueous solutions (anolytes and catholyte) in the processing of fruits (cherries, morellos, and strawberries) for decontamination has been tested. Freshly prepared analytes and catholyte without the addition of salts were used, as well as stored for 7 months anolytes, prepared with 0.5% NaCl and a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3. The anolyte prepared with a combination of 0.5% NaCl and 0.5% Na2CO3, as well as the anolyte obtained with 0.5% NaCl, exhibit high antimicrobial activity against the surface microflora of strawberries, cherries, and sour cherries. They inactivate E. coli for 15 minutes. The other species of the fam. Enterobacteriaceae were also affected to the maximum extent, as is the total number of microorganisms, especially in cherries and sour cherries. Even stored for 7 months, they largely retain their antimicrobial properties. Anolyte and catholyte, obtained without the addition of salts, showed a lower effect on the total number of microorganisms, but had a significant effect on Gram-negative bacteria, and especially with regard to the sanitary indicative E. coli.

Individual fructan tri-, tetra- and pentasaccharide isomers in neutral, water-soluble extracts from Lolium temulentum were purified and the linkages present in these isomeric oligosaccharides were analysed by combined GC-mass spectrometry of partially methylated alditol acetates. 1-Kestose and neokestose were the most abundant trisaccharides with 6-kestose present in much lower amounts. Analysis of isomers of DP 4 and 5 showed that multiple linkage types were present with structures based on all three trisaccharides. Oligosaccharides based on neokestose but with 2,6 linkages between adjacent fructose residues have not been previously detected in higher plants. © 1992.

: Metal-free organocatalysts are becoming an important tool for the sustainable developments of various bioactive heterocycles. On the other hand, during last two decades, calix[n]arenes have been gaining considerable attention due to their wide range of applicability in the field of supramolecular chemistry. Recently, sulfonic acid functionalized calix[n] arenes are being employed as an efficient alternative catalyst for the synthesis of various bioactive scaffolds. In this review we have summarized the catalytic efficiency of p-sulfonic acid calix[n]arenes for the synthesis of diverse biologically promising scaffolds under various reaction conditions. There is no such review available in the literature showing the catalytic applicability of p-sulfonic acid calix[n]arenes. Therefore, we strongly believe that this review will surely attract those researchers who are interested about this fascinating organocatalyst.

The kinetics of oxidation of alkenes by thallic sulphate in aqueous solutions, involving the two reaction steps-the hydroxythallation and the dethallation - was studied, and the effect of salts on the kinetics was examined; this made it possible to specify more precisely the reaction mechanism and to suggest a qualitative model of the reaction coordinate. It was found that in homogeneous as well as in heterogeneous reaction conditions, the reaction can be accelerated appreciably by adding tetraalkylammonium salts. These salts not only operate as catalysts of the phase transfer, but also exert a significant kinetic effect, which can be explained with a simplification in terms of a stabilization of the transition state of the reaction.

As a contribution to the chemistry of muscle tissue, the solubility of the protein of haddock muscle in aqueous solutions of sodium chloride and neutral potassium phosphate, respectively, was determined. The results are expressed in tabular form and graphically in the form of solubility curves. A water-soluble protein and also a salt-soluble protein were isolated from dialyzed haddock muscle by extraction methods. These proteins were obtained in a comparatively pure condition by precipitation from solution in the region of their isoelectric points.
