Although DNA metabarcoding of pollen mixtures has been increasingly used in the field of pollination biology, methodological and interpretation issues arise due to its high sensitivity. Filtering or maintaining false positives, contaminants, and rare taxa or molecular features could lead to different ecological results. Here, we reviewed how this choice has been addressed in 43 studies featuring pollen DNA metabarcoding, which highlighted a very high heterogeneity of filtering methods. We assessed how these strategies shaped pollen assemblage composition, species richness, and interaction networks. To do so, we compared four processing methods: unfiltering, filtering with a proportional 1% of sample reads, a fixed threshold of 100 reads, and the ROC approach (Receiver Operator Characteristic). The results indicated that filtering impacted species composition and reduced species richness, with ROC emerging as a conservative approach. Moreover, in contrast to unfiltered networks, filtering decreased network Connectance and Entropy, and it increased Modularity and Connectivity, indicating that using cut-off thresholds better describes interactions. Overall, unfiltering might compromise reliable ecological interpretations, unless a study targets rare species. We discuss the suitability of each filtering type,plead for justifying filtering strategies on biological or methodological bases and for developing shared approaches to make future studies more comparable.

DNA metabarcoding approaches to analyse complex mixtures of pollen has become the standard in pollination biology, especially in the light of recent threats affecting pollination. In spite of the increasing adoption of High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) approaches, these studies generate huge numbers of raw reads, some of which might be associated to false positives or infrequently recorded species with potentially little biological information. If these reads are not discarded (i.e. pruned), they can lead to changes in the ecological findings and lead to biased conclusions. In this study we reviewed 42 papers in the recent pollen DNA metabarcoding literature and focused on the type of pruning applied. We also tested whether the different types of those cut off threshold may leave a mark on the DNA metabarcoding data. To do so, we compared for the first time community composition, species richness and networks of species interactions (i.e. Connectace, Modularity, Connectivity and Shannon entropy) associated with the most relevant ways of treating HTS outputs: no cut (no reads filtering), or cutting levels obtained as proportional 1% of sample total reads, or as fixed amount of 100 reads, or from ROC (Receiver operator characteristic). Results clearly indicated that pruning type shapes species composition and that to apply or not a threshold dramatically impacts ecological indices, potentially increasing the risk of misinterpreting DNA metabarcoding data under an ecological point of view. Given the high methodological heterogeneity from the revised literature, we discuss in what conditions filtering types may be more appropriate, and also recommend to biologically justify the pruning threshold when analysing DNA metabarcoding raw reads, and to develop shared approaches to make future studies more comparable.

The major vegetation types may be recognised from the pollen assemblage being deposited beneath them, hence the palaeovegetation may be reconstructed from fossil pollen assemblages. The climatic parameters of the vegetation may then be used to reconstruct palaeoclimates. The result, however, is very general. Most pollen types can only be affiliated with a family, a genus or a group of species and the ecological tolerances within these groups may not be uniform. There are, however, some distinctive pollen types that can be identified with a single living species and this paper examines the potential of these types in the reconstruction of palaeoclimates. Lagarostrobos franklinii (J.D.Hook) Quinn, Huon pine, has a long history and the fossil occurrences of it are compatible with the hypothesis that its ecological tolerances have not changed and it has always required very high humidity. Two sclerophyllous taxa,Eucalyptus spathulata Hook. and Dodonaea triquetra Wendl., however, coexisted with rainforest and then other vegetation types as the climate became drier, adapting to the prevailing conditions. The evidence suggests that the salt-tolerant E. spathulata may have evolved in small patches of coastal scrub, subjected to marine influence, within the dominant rainforest vegetation.

Abstract Fisheries has a major contribution for the Indonesian economy both on a local and national scale. However, the phenomenon of climate change can threaten the sustainability of this sector. Therefore, a scientific approach is needed to determine the level of risk and adaptation strategies for fisheries, one of which is through vulnerability analysis. Vulnerability is the final analysis resulted from the analysis of sensitivity and exposure. Both of these analyses are important to determine the parameters that will affect the value of the fishery vulnerability to climate change. This research is focused on sensitivity and exposure analysis with the coverage limit is the province area to determine the sensitivity and exposure index that exists in the study area. The result will be important input in further research for the vulnerability of capture fisheries to climate change. Three provinces in Indonesia were selected through purposive sampling method. The source of data for indices variables were using recorded data in 2009-2020 from relevant sources. Result described that SST variability in the three provinces has the same pattern. In the exposure analysis, the SST is linked to the catch resulting in different exposure statuses in each province. It also illustrated those areas with a very high number of fishermen and catches will have very high sensitivity. The research will support in the sustainable management of capture fish at the province scale.

With the awareness of their environmental performance, countries can provide strategies and policies to improve their environmental performance. Thus, countries can contribute to their own economic development by increasing their environmental performance. Therefore, measuring the environmental performance of countries is of great importance. Environmental performance of countries can be measured by the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). EPI consists of two factors, environmental health and ecosystem vitality. Its factors are environmental protection components, and environmental protection components are environmental protection variables. In this context, the research has two purposes. The first of these,To measure the latest and up-to-date environmental performances of the G7 group countries for 2018, using CODAS and TOPSIS multi-criteria decision-making methods (MCDM) over the values of EPI components. The second is to determine which MCDM method can be used to explain the EPI values of countries the most. According to the findings, the ranking of countries' environmental performance with the CODAS method was determined as England, France, Japan, Germany, Canada, Italy and the USA. According to the TOPSIS method, this ranking was determined as England, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy and the USA. According to another finding, it has been observed that there is a significant, positive and very high relationship between the EPI values of the countries and the values measured by the CODAS and TOPSIS methods. According to this result, it was evaluated that EPI can be explained by both methods. In addition, it has been concluded that the correlation value between TOPSIS values of EPI within the scope of the research is higher than the CODAS method, so it can be explained better with the TOPSIS method compared to the EPI CODAS method. In the literature, in order not to find a study measuring the environmental performance of countries with CODAS and TOPSIS methods, it was evaluated that the study in question contributed to the literature, since the findings obtained as a result of the research became a data set for future studies. The photoelectric properties of ZnO-doped WSe2 thin films created on Si substrates by a thermal evaporation method were investigated. The effects of ZnO on the surface morphology, structure, photoluminescence, light absorption characteristics and electrical properties of WSe2 thin films were analyzed. It is found that the nucleation density and the crystallinity of the ZnO-doped WSe2 nanowires are higher than without doping, and the electron mobility of the doped sample is about 1.4 times that of the undoped sample. Also, doping improved the light absorption and photoluminescence efficiency. Additionally, the [Formula: see text]–[Formula: see text] curve of the ZnO-doped WSe2/Si heterojunction gradually changes from a rectification characteristic to a linear dependence, and the photocurrent increases by about four times when the light power increases from 0 to 25 mW/cm2. Moreover, the heterojunction has a very high sensitivity to operating temperature; the current significantly increases as the temperature increases to 300[Formula: see text]. With high absorptivity and photoluminescence efficiency, and sensitivity to light and temperature, ZnO-doped WSe2 film is promising for use in optoelectronic devices.
