A high-pressure pneumatic catapult works under extreme boundaries such as high-pressure and rapid change of pressure and temperature, with the features of nonlinearity and gas-solid convection. In the thermodynamics processes, the pressure is much larger than the critical pressure, and the compressibility factor can deviate from the Zeno line significantly. Therefore, the pneumatic performance and thermo-physical properties need to be described with the real gas hypothesis instead of the ideal gas one. It is found that the analytical results based on the ideal gas model overestimate the performance of the catapult, in comparison to the test data. To obtain a theoretical model with dynamic leakage compensation, leakage tests are carried out, and the relationship among the leakage rate, pressure and stroke is fitted. The compressibility factor library of the equation of state for compressed air is established and evaluated by referring it to the Nelson-Obert generalized compressibility charts. Based on the Peng–Robinson equation, a theoretical model of the high-pressure pneumatic catapult is developed, in which the effects of dynamic leakage and the forced convective heat transfer between the gas and the metal wall are taken into account. The results from the theoretical model are consistent with the data from ejection tests. This research presents an approach to study the performance of a high-pressure pneumatic catapult with high precision.

The ideal gas equation of state is defined for a theoretical gas composed of molecules that have perfect elastic collisions and no intermolecular interchange forces. However, it has been widely reported that such an ideal model may not be a realistic representation under certain circumstances, in particular when the compressibility factor (Z) is not close to unity, and the consideration of other equations of state (real models) is imperative. This study investigates the effect of using different equations of state, namely, the van der Waals, Redlich-Kwong, and Peng-Robinson equations, in the ideal isothermal analysis of a rotary displacer Stirling engine with the most commonly used gases, helium and air. The results are obtained numerically considering two major SE applications (cryocooling and distributed power generation) and two sets of operating conditions, and plotted in the form of Pressure-Volume diagrams. The amount of work per cycle based on the ideal gas model is taken as reference to compare the results from other models. The data show that at low pressure or high temperature conditions (corresponding to low density), the ideal gas equation is suitable for both gases, and using different models has no significant impact in the overall analysis. Additionally, while the use of ideal gas model is rather practical and fast, implementation of other models necessitate intensive computational processes.

Abstract In many practical applications of thermodynamics, the use of simplified relationships of the ideal-gas model over a more accurate but more complex real gas model, is a critical decision to make. Thermodynamic departure functions provide screening criteria to evaluate whether the ideal-gas model can accurately represent a gas behavior. This paper reports several departure functions to evaluate deviation of a real gas from the ideal-gas model. Included in this paper is the derivation of departure functions based on isothermal compressibility, isobaric expansivity, isochoric change of pressure with temperature, isochoric change of internal energy with pressure, sonic speed, and heat capacities difference. The description of each of these departure functions is accompanied by a numerical example. Departure functions defined in this paper have led to improved representation of deviation from the ideal-gas model across a range of ±2% deviation of the specific volume departure (also known as the compressibility factor, Z) for a typical gas mixture encountered in natural gas processing. The limitations involved in using the compressibility factor, Z, to evaluate departure from the ideal-gas model is highlighted. It is shown that even as the compressibility factor, Z, approaches unity at certain thermodynamic conditions, other departure functions exhibit considerable deviations from the ideal-gas model. It is concluded that the compressibility factor, Z, should not be used as “the only criterion” to evaluate conformance to the ideal-gas model. This paper also explains the physical significance of Schultz compressibility functions X, Y, and L [3] by introducing departure functions based on isothermal compressibility and isobaric expansivity.

Since the molecular force and the molecular volume were ignored in the ideal gas model, and it was less accurate when the ideal gas model was used to depict characteristics of real gas under high pressure, so the real gas model was adopted and the heat transfer was considered, the dynamic variation model was set up for internal gas in the pressure vessel during loading operation. The model was solved by using the numerical simulation method of Runge-Kutta. Comparison was made between the ideal gas model and the real gas model under adiabatic and non-adiabatic conditions, it showed that under low pressure the results obtained by the two models were in good agreement, but under high pressure the deviation was enlarged, the real gas model with considering the heat transfer influenced would be more coincident with the reality.

Abstract In-cylinder temperature is a critical quantity for modeling and understanding combustion dynamics in internal combustion engines (ICEs). It is difficult to measure in small, two-stroke engines due to high operational speeds and limited space to install instrumentation. Optical access was established in a 55-cm3 displacement two-stroke engine using M4 bolts as carriers for sapphire rods to establish a 1.5-mm diameter optical path through the combustion chamber. Temperature laser absorption spectroscopy was successfully used to measure time varying in-cylinder temperature clocked to the piston position with a resolution of 3.6 crank angle degrees (CAD) at 6000 rpm. The resulting temperature profiles clearly showed the traverse of the flame front and were qualitatively consistent with in-cylinder pressure, engine speed, and delivery ratio. The temperature measurements were compared to aggregate in-cylinder temperatures calculated using the ideal gas model using measured in-cylinder pressure and trapped mass calculated at exact port closure as inputs. The calculation was sensitive to the trapped mass determination, and the results show that using the ideal gas model for in-cylinder temperature calculations in heat flux models may fail to capture trends in actual in-cylinder temperature with changing engine operating conditions.

This paper deals with a numerical model of top tension risers with hydropneumatic tensioner for Spar application in the Gulf of Mexico environment. The nonlinearity of the stiffness and the friction characteristics of the tensioner combined with stick-slip behavior of the riser keel joint are investigated. The relationship between tensions and strokes for the hydropneumatic tensioner is based on the ideal gas equation where the isotropic gas constant can be varied to achieve an optimum stroke design based on the tensioner stiffness. Challenges of modeling the coupling effects in the finite element (FE) method between the tensioner and hull motion are also presented. This new FE model is implemented into a fully-coupled time-domain coupled-dynamics-analysis program for floating bodies. The effect of nonlinearity of tensioner curve, tensioner friction, and riser keel friction is intensively investigated. The resultant global motion, TTR stroke, and tensions are systematically compared with those of a simple engineering approach, in which the nonlinear coupling effect is captured by linearization.

A new model for the prediction of caloric properties of moist air and combustion gases has been developed. The model very accurately predicts ideal gas caloric properties of undissociated gas mixtures at temperatures from 200 K to 3300 K. In addition, a simple model has been developed to account for caloric effects of dissociation at temperatures up to 2000 K. As a part of the project, scientific equations for the ideal gas isobaric heat capacity of the individual combustion gas components have been established. Based on this reference, an assessment and comparison of the new model with the most common technical models have been carried out. Results of the simplified dissociation model are compared to the results of complex chemical equilibrium programs. To mark out the limits of the ideal gas hypothesis, some sample calculations are given, which compare results of the new ideal gas model to results from sophisticated real gas models.

By application of the nonextensive statistics to the ideal gas model, we establish a nonextensive gas model. If we regard the nonextensive gas as a real gas, we can use the nonextensive parameter q ∈ ℝ in Tsallis statistics to describe Joule coefficient, Joule–Thomson coefficient, second virial coefficient and etc. We also derive an expression, with a multiplier T1-q, of the heat capacity of the nonextensive gas. We can prove that in the quasi-equilibrium system there is 1 - q > 0, 2 so the heat capacity still vanishes if temperature tends to zero, just as that in Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics.

Abstract Efficient processes with organic fluids are becoming increasingly important. The high tech fluid Novec™ is such an organic fluid and is used, for example, as a coolant for highperformance electronics, low-temperature heat transfer applications, cooling of automotive batteries, just to mention a few. Thus, efficient designed fans for the transport of organic fluids are becoming more and more important in the process engineering. CFD-simulations are nowadays integral part of the design and optimization process of fans. For air at the most usual application conditions, i.e. no extreme temperatures or pressures, the ideal gas model is in good agreement with the real gas approach. In the present study, this real gas approach for organic fluids have been investigated with CFD methods and, the deviation from the ideal gas model has been analyzed. For this purpose, a simulation model of a centrifugal fan with volute has been designed as a test case. First, the ideal gas model approach has been compared with the real gas approach model of Peng-Robinson for air using the commercial solver ANSYS CFX. Thereafter, the same comparison has been performed using the organic fluid Novec™. After a detailed grid study, the entire fan characteristics, i.e. the design point and the off-design points, have been simulated and evaluated for each fluid (air and Novec™) and gas model (ideal gas and Peng-Robinson real gas). The steady state simulations of the centrifugal fan have been performed using the Frozen Rotor model. The simulation results have been compared, discussed and presented in detail.

The ideal gas (IG) model is probably the most well-known gas models in engineering thermodynamics. In this paper, we extend the IG model into an ideal gas equilibrium (IGE model) mixture model by incorporating chemical equilibrium calculations as part of the state evaluation. Through a simple graphical interface, users can set the atomic composition of a gas mixture. We have integrated this model into a thermodynamic web portal TEST (http://thermofluids.sdsu.edu/) that contains Java applets for various models for properties of pure substances. In the state panel of the IGE model, the known thermodynamic properties are entered. For a given pressure and temperature, the mixture's Gibbs function is minimized subject to atomic constraints and the equilibrium composition along with thermodynamic properties of the mixture are calculated and displayed. What is unique about this approach is that equilibrium computations are performed in the background, without requiring any major change in the familiar user interface used in other state daemons. Properties calculated by this equilibrium state daemon are compared with results from other established applications such as NASA CEA and STANJAN. Also, two different algorithms, an iterative approach and a direct approach based on minimizing different thermodynamic functions in different situation, are compared.
