Future trends in maritime technology include the application of additive technology in spare parts management. Nowadays, 3D printing has become an integral technology in many fields. Maritime industry is one of the fields where 3D printing has become a focus of research. To prepare Electro-technical Officers (ETOs) for the future, it is necessary to investigate parameters which help with deciding whether to use additive technology or to order a spare part. This paper aims to research parameters influencing spare parts printing as a job carried out by ETOs aboard ships. Conclusions about the filament density and quality of the printed parts are derived and presented. Suggestions for future work and possible applications are given.

3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) (in the industrial context) is an innovative, as opposed to subtractive, technology, bringing new opportunities and benefits to the spare part supply chain (SPSC). The aim of this work is to capture the views of the stakeholders at the end of the chain, extruding factors that will benefit the end-user and the factors that are likely to be an obstacle, by employing the questionnaire method. Company objectives regarding spares (cost reductions, improvement of services, space reduction) have been prioritized differently by the stakeholders. The most important barriers according to the participants are the quality assurance of the spare parts made by the new technology followed by the know-how and skills of staff. Other views such as suitable parts are suggested. The practical value of this work, in addition to assessing the readiness of the industry, is that it provides guidance for the successful implementation of AM in the maritime industry.

Spare part management is one of the most important work for enterprises, especially for manufacturing enterprises; however, the spare part management problems trouble enterprise operators a lot. In this article, implementation methods of lean spare parts management are illuminated. Spare parts purchase process is declared to reduce the purchasing cost and inventory value. We had established a suitable lean spare parts inventory management model for consumable parts, wear parts, insurance parts and accident parts. In addition, methods of lean spare parts management had been created base on optimized supply chain, ERP and integrating repeated material inventory. We used SAP-iPro system and self-developed system to manage spare parts, so that warehouse management process, spare parts purchase process and maintenance process are standardized. According to theory analysis and practice, the remarkable economic benefit is created for enterprise by the means of optimizing spare parts distribution, standardizing and scientific spare parts management.

Here we contemplate the future and look also back to see where we have arrived. Art has responded to the ever-increasing presence of images available to people everywhere by maintaining its authenticity and originality. The proliferation of images in newspapers, magazines, books, posters and postcards has deeply influenced people and increased the number of images around them. Next the television, videos and movies introduced moving images and further accelerated this process. This whole phase has taken roughly two hundred years. More recently, the digitizing and Internet together have further made the spreading of images much easier and the quality of copying and receiving images gets all the time better. Meanwhile, the cost of reproducing images has drastically decreased. After this I will cover the present and future trends in art market and new ways of creating visual art and marketing it. There are some people who early on started to wonder whether authenticity really matters any more. My answer is that it matters more than ever and that art is still going strong.

This article reveals the essence of the assessment of teachers’ activities. The authors show the importance of a comprehensive assessment of this activity. Today, comprehensive assessment of the activities of teachers is an urgent problem that determines the purpose of the work - the development of a model for evaluating the activities of teachers in an educational organization. The degree of development of this issue depends on the quality of education in general. Therefore, the authors not only developed a model for assessing the activities of teachers, but also conducted a study that revealed the results of introducing a rating model into the activities of an educational institution. On the basis of the results obtained in the future, work in an educational organization for the evaluation of the activities of teaching staff will be improved.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to evaluate the comprehensiveness of sustainability reporting in higher education institutions.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts a university sustainability rating framework and uses it to evaluate the comprehensiveness of sustainability reporting in higher education institutions.FindingsThe results of the study demonstrate that notwithstanding growing concerns over sustainability issues; higher education institutions have been slow to adopt sustainability reporting practices including publishing consistent and periodic reports, receiving third-party assurance and integrating sustainability reporting into university’s sustainability management systems.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of the study suggest that the quality of sustainability reporting varies quite significantly, and important dimensions such as education and outreach programs are ill-treated in universities’ sustainability reports. The quality presents a tremendous challenge for sustainability reporting as more organizations are joining the sustainability reporting process, the quality would become a differentiator and competitive advantage, the study concludes. Two main limitations were identified. First, the number of reports examined were limited and are not representative of all higher education institutions. Second, data from other sources, like websites, were not factored in the analysis, as the study focuses on evaluating the comprehensiveness of sustainability reporting in higher education institutions.Practical implicationsThe results provide useful insights into comprehensiveness (one aspect of quality of sustainability reporting) in higher education institutions and help to better navigate the future trends in sustainability reporting practices of universities.Originality/valueSustainability reporting is well established in the corporate environment; however, the extent to which it has been adopted and its quality in universities remains relatively unexamined. The study attempts to fill the research gap in the quality of sustainability reporting (comprehensiveness) in higher education institutions to better navigate the future trends in sustainability reporting practices of universities.

This work presents the review of locomotives and the future of railway automotive power in Africa. Locomotives down time on account of inadequate spare parts still remains a challenge in African. It is thus, imperative to review the locomotives in African, to establish the current capabilities as well as provide recommendations to bridge the gaps and its extrapolated trends in future. Firstly, the comparison factors were track length, electrified rails, number of locomotives and yearly passengers on each of Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia rails. Secondly, the focus was on engine parameters from literatures and maintenance logbooks of locomotives. From available data, it was found that South Africa and Egypt have more advanced rail system than the rest four selected countries. It was also found that additive manufacturing, 3D printing, ductile cast iron and die-forging can be used to produce the engine body for diesel engine using steel and aluminum alloys while aluminum silicon and tin doped with copper are good for reciprocation mechanisms. And finally, increased reliability of locomotives can be guided by an engine selection matrix, while use of renewable and energy hybridization are needed to meet the expansion of railroads in Africa.
