The paper outlines major preconditions of development of energy efficiency programs and the process of their introduction from the perspective of sustainable development concept. Energy saving measures of European Union are examined, its experience and results, like green books and Thermie programs, etc are analyzed. The paper also specifies relevant activities and responsibilities undertaken by Member States by 2030 and the rates planned to be achieved. The experience of neighboring Poland in energy efficiency promotion is analyzed, as far as the country most closely resembles Ukraine by the initial rates in 1990. We calculated conditional losses of Ukraine in 2017 as the gap between the rates of energy efficiency of Ukraine and Poland (similarity of climate conditions and the state of housing funds allowed us to assume that the comparison will be the most correct regarding Ukraine). The results of calculations make us conclude that the funds are used most efficiently if the money designated, for example, for subsidizing of population are directed at strengthening of energy efficiency (at least up to the level of neighboring country). It will result in saving of about 40 billion. This is the amount defined as Ukrainian capacity in terms of improvement of energy saving and possible results of its realization. The paper determines the stage Ukraine is at in introduction of energy efficiency measures and programs: “warm loans” program; conditions regarding energy saving in Ukraine enshrined in the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement; creation of legal basis, namely the Law of Ukraine “On Energy Efficiency Fund” as of 8 June 2017. The role of newly created Energy Efficiency Fund is analyzed. Special attention is paid to the fact that energy efficient construction is one of international liabilities undertaken by Ukraine. The presence of The Active House Alliance at Ukrainian market is an important achievement in this sphere as it is the non-profit association aiming at creation of housing concept corresponding to the sustainable development principles.

Cities are a complex mass of morphological properties of many city fragments, which play a major role in energy consumption. Urban form, urban patterns, or city fragments can also be seen as defined by algorithms or form generators.  Cities are designed taking into account infrastructure, city standards and land use regulations. Energy efficiency of the urban form may be understood as the balance between gains and losses of energy, which may depend on a set of parameters mostly defined by the geometrical shape of the buildings and the distance between them. The study starts from the development and analysis of 60 hypothetical models in order to evaluate their energy efficiency potential. The Galapagos Evolutionary Solver is used as a tool in order to find the set of parameters, which brings to the morphological properties the optimal combination of density and surface-to-volume ratio. At the final stage morphological properties of 64 Prague’s patterns were selected.  Computer simulation and analysis is performed using the models extracted from the virtual Google Earth model of Prague. During the process of evaluation of the samples, the relationship between the urban form and such parameters as plot coverage, surface-to-volume ratio and the incident solar radiation was established and potentially higher energy efficient structures were indicated. As the result of analysis the interrelation between urban form and energy efficiency was established, which allowed to identify the urban patterns with the higher potential of energy efficiency.

Abstract The low energy efficiency of the solar distillers is one of the most key barriers to their effectual usage in the desalination domain. In this work, an experimental investigation was conducted to enhance the freshwater productivity of the hemispherical solar distiller. This was achieved by utilizing flat and v-corrugated iron trays configurations on the bottom of the distiller basin in order to increase the vaporization surface area for better heat transfer of saline water. Three distillers were designed and examined; namely, conventional hemispherical solar distiller (CHSD), hemispherical solar distiller with flat iron trays (HSD-FIT), and hemispherical solar distiller with v-corrugated iron trays (HSD-VIT). Moreover, the effects of using wick materials (WM) in the basin of HSD-FIT and HSD-VIT have been also investigated and compared to that of CHSD. A comparative thermo-economic analysis of HSD-VITWM, HSD-FITWM, HSD-VIT, HSD-FIT, and CHSD has been conducted to determine the better modification that maximizes the performance of hemispherical stills. Experiments were carried out at the desert climate conditions of El-Oued (33°27′N, 7°11′E), Algeria. The results showed that all modifications revealed good thermo-economic performance enhancements and the HSD-VITWM achieved the maximal improvement from both freshwater production and energo-economic performance. The freshwater productivity and energy efficiency of the HSD-VITWM were improved by 83.12 and 81.67%, respectively, relative to CHSD. Additionally, the cost of freshwater production was lowered by 41.72%.

A basic principle of well designed greenhouse design emphasizes the utilization of solar energy as much as possible to grow the plants indoors during extreme outdoor climate conditions. Greenhouses can use significant amount of energy due to several factors including poor envelope design, inappropriate maintenance practices, and heavy reliance on fuel-based heating systems. In order to reduce energy consumption in the agricultural industry of Colorado, it is important to design energy efficient greenhouses under Colorado climatic conditions.

Abstract In this article the research is concentrated on defining the possibility and potentials of design to enhance the energy efficiency and refine the climate conditions in the existing residential buildings in Armenia. The digital model of existing residential building is used to calculate the annual energy consumption, by simulation software—Autodesk Green Building Student. The horizontal solar panel systems offered by local market leaders were applied to calculate the annual savings, the required installation area, prices, etc. Consequently, the actual efficiency of energy saving technological process of residential buildings in Armenia is estimated. Based on the applied strategies and obtained fact, some recommendations are made for residential buildings. This article is intended to help and to be stimulus for architects and constructors to consider and include green technologies in their new projects.

На основе математического моделирования тепловых режимов биогазовой установки проведено исследование влияния климатических условий, режимов сбраживания, конструктивных особенностей метантенка, видов используемого субстрата на получение товарного биогаза. Установлено, что круглогодичная работа биогазовой установки в полностью автономном режиме в условиях сурового климата возможна только при объеме метантенка больше некоторого критического объема, определяемого как климатическими условиями, так и видом используемого субстрата, конструкцией установки и теплоизоляции. При объеме меньше критического автономная работа биореактора возможна только в теплое время года. Определена величина термического сопротивления теплоизоляции реактора, при которой возможна автономная круглогодичная работа реактора. При этом мезофильный режим работы реактора предпочтительнее в климатических условиях Удмуртии, если ориентирован на получение биогаза как основного продукта сбраживания и его энергетического использования.

The article considers the current state of construction of enclosing walls with facade systems for southern latitudes with a hot climate, taking into account the thermal air envelope formed at the walls of buildings of different orientations under the condition of facade insolation. The influence of the total temperature on the external enclosing structure of buildings, depending on their orientation and the conditions of insolation, is determined. The significance of the external walls of buildings under different conditions of facade insolation in the regulation of the heat-wind regime of the wall microclimatic layer of the air and the room is revealed. The list of facade systems for improving the ventilation of the wall layer of air, premises and the territory adjacent to the building, which are of crucial importance in ensuring the microclimatic comfort of the indoor environment in the problem of improving the energy efficiency of buildings, is formulated.
