Predicting the electrical breakdown of polymers is critical for certifying the endurance and lifetime of high voltage power equipment. Since various factors contribute nonlinearly to the breakdown phenomena of polymer insulators, it is difficult to assess the impact of each factor independently. In this study, we numerically analyzed the breakdown phenomenon because of the ramp rate of the DC voltage applied to a polymer insulator, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), using the finite element method (FEM). To predict the breakdown initiation, we analyzed the relaxation time of the conduction current through the insulator as a significant indicator. The bipolar charge transport (BCT) model was used to analyze the charge behavior within the LDPE, and the breakdown voltage was predicted by incorporating the molecular displacement model. This analysis was conducted for a wide range of ramp rates from 10 to 1500 V/s. The current density was calculated using two different methods, namely the energy and average methods, and the results were compared with each other. The results of the numerical model were further verified by comparing with those from experiments reported in the literature.

Abstract The oil and gas, chemical, and process industries employ centrifugal compressors for a wide range of applications. Due to this, the conditions under which centrifugal compressors have to operate, vary significantly from case to case. Gas pipeline compressors, for example, may feature discharge pressures well over 100 bar. During the last decades, comprehensive research was conducted on the impact of high pressure operating conditions on the vibrational behavior of centrifugal compressors. Nowadays, it is well-known that an increase in gas pressure levels leads to a more pronounced interaction between the side cavities and the impeller, which results in a frequency shift of the acoustic and structural modes. For the safe operation of compressors, it is necessary to predict these coupled natural frequencies accurately. The state-of-the-art approach to achieve this objective is the finite element method. While this technique provides high-quality results, it incurs high computational costs and is, therefore, time-consuming. The authors of the current paper propose a generalized model to overcome this challenge. It uses the uncoupled modes of the impeller and side cavities in a modal superposition to approximate the coupled system's natural frequencies. In this way, the intended design geometries are considered while reducing the computational effort significantly. In a numerical study, the generalized model is applied to different systems of increasing complexity, and the results are compared to a finite element analysis. Finally, the paper concludes with a discussion of the limitations and benefits of all employed numerical methods.

Abstract. Coralline algae are important habitat formers found on all rocky shores. While the impact of future ocean acidification on the physiological performance of the species has been well studied, little research has focused on potential changes in structural integrity in response to climate change. A previous study using 2-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) suggested increased vulnerability to fracture (by wave action or boring) in algae grown under high CO2 conditions. To assess how realistically 2-D simplified models represent structural performance, a series of increasingly biologically accurate 3-D FE models that represent different aspects of coralline algal growth were developed. Simplified geometric 3-D models of the genus Lithothamnion were compared to models created from computed tomography (CT) scan data of the same genus. The biologically accurate model and the simplified geometric model representing individual cells had similar average stresses and stress distributions, emphasising the importance of the cell walls in dissipating the stress throughout the structure. In contrast models without the accurate representation of the cell geometry resulted in larger stress and strain results. Our more complex 3-D model reiterated the potential of climate change to diminish the structural integrity of the organism. This suggests that under future environmental conditions the weakening of the coralline algal skeleton along with increased external pressures (wave and bioerosion) may negatively influence the ability for coralline algae to maintain a habitat able to sustain high levels of biodiversity.

This paper presents a unified novel technique for enforcing nonlinear beam-to-shell, beam-to-solid, and shell-to-solid constraints in explicit finite element formulations. The limitations of classical multi-point constraint approaches are examined at length, particularly in the context of explicit solution schemes. Novel formulation of a generalized constraint method that ensures proper element coupling is then presented, and its computer implementation in explicit integration algorithms is discussed. Crucial in this regard is the accurate and efficient representation of finite rotations, accomplished using an incremental rotation tensor. The results of some illustrative test cases show the accuracy and robustness of the newly developed algorithm for a wide range of deformation, including that in which large rotations are encountered. When compared to existing works, the salient features of the current method are in evidence.

In some coal-fired power plants, pipeline elements have worked for over 200 000 hours and increased number of failures is observed. The paper discuses thermal wear processes that take place in those elements and lead to rupture. Mathematical model based on creep test data, and describing creep processes for analyzed material, has been developed. Model has been verified for pipeline operating temperature, lower than tests temperature, basing on Larson-Miller relation. Prepared model has been used for thermal-strength calculations based on a finite element method. Processes taking place inside of element and leading to its failure has been described. Than, basing on prepared mathematical creep model and FE model introduced to Ansys program further researches are made. Analysis of dimensions and shape of pipe junction and its influence on operational element lifetime is presented. In the end multi variable dependence of temperature, steam pressure and element geometry is shown, allowing optimization of process parameters in function of required operational time or maximization of steam parameters. The article presents wide range of methods. The creep test data were recalculated for operational temperature using Larson-Miller parameter. The creep strain were modelled, used equations and their parameters are presented. Analysis of errors were conducted. Geometry of failing pipe junction was introduced to the Ansys program and the finite element analysis of creep process were conducted.

Accidental loads, for example, due to heavy dropped objects, impact from the trawl gear and anchors of fishing vessels can cause damage to pipelines on the sea bed. The amount of damage will depend on the impact energy. The indentation will be localized at the contact area of the pipe and the impacting object, however, an understanding of the extent of the damage due to an impact is required so that if one should occur in practice an assessment can be made to determine if remedial action needs to be taken to ensure that the pipeline is still serviceable. There are a number of parameters, including the pipe cross section and impact energy, which influence the impact behaviour of a pipe. This paper describes the response, and assesses the damage, of mild steel pipes under high mass low velocity impacts. For this purpose full scale impacts tests were carried out on mild steel pipe having diameter of 457 mm, thickness of 25.4 mm and length of 2000 mm. The pipe was restrained along the base and a 2 tonnes mass with sharp impactor having a vertical downward velocity of 3870 mm/sec was used to impact the pipe transversely with an impact energy of 16 kJ. It was found from the impact tests that a smooth indentation was produced in the pipe. The impact tests were then used for validation of the non-linear dynamic implicit analyses using the finite element analysis software ABAQUS. Deformations at the impact zone, the rebound velocity, etc, recorded in the tests and the results of the finite element analysis were found to be in good agreement. The impact tests and finite element analyses described in this paper will help to improve the understanding of the response of steel pipes under impact loading and can be used as a benchmark for further finite element modelling of impacts on pipes.

A method of carrying out a combined axial walking and lateral buckling assessment for a flexible flowline has been developed using finite element analysis. The method overcomes limitations of screening assessments which could be inconclusive when applied either to a flexible flowline on an undulating seabed with transverse gradients or to one that buckles during hydrotest. Flexible flowlines that were to be surface-laid on a seabed with longitudinal undulations and transverse gradients were assessed using the method. The flexible flowlines were simulated in their as-laid state, and the simulation incorporated hydrotest pressure and the pressure & temperature gradients and transients associated with multiple start-ups. The objective was to quantify the axial walking and lateral slip tendency of the flexible flowlines and the impact that walking might have on the connected end structures. The lateral buckle locations predicted by finite element analysis were compared to a post-hydrotest survey and the radius of curvature from analysis was compared to the minimum bend radius of the flexible.

The accuracy of a finite element model for design and analysis of a metal forging operation is limited by the incorporated material model’s ability to predict deformation behavior over a wide range of operating conditions. Current rheological models prove deficient in several respects due to the difficulty in establishing complicated relations between many parameters. More recently, artificial neural networks (ANN) have been suggested as an effective means to overcome these difficulties. To this end, a robust ANN with the ability to determine flow stresses based on strain, strain rate, and temperature is developed and linked with finite element code. Comparisons of this novel method with conventional means are carried out to demonstrate the advantages of this approach.
