The turbulent pulsating flow and heat transfer in straight and 90° curved square pipes are investigated in this study. Both experimental temperature field measurements at the cross-sections of the pipes and conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulation were performed. The steady turbulent flow was investigated and compared to the pulsating flow under the same time-averaged Reynolds number. The time-averaged Reynolds number of the pulsating flow, as well as the steady flow, was approximately 60,000. The Womersley number of the pulsating flow was 43.1, corresponding to a 30 Hz pulsating frequency. Meanwhile, the Dean number in the curved pipe was approximately 31,000. The results showed that the local heat flux of the pulsating flow was greater than that of the steady flow when the location was closer to the upstream pulsation generator. However, the total heat flux of the pulsating flow was less than that of the steady flow. Moreover, the instantaneous velocity and temperature fields of the simulation were used to demonstrate the heat transfer mechanism of the pulsating flow. The behaviors, such as the obvious separation between the air and pipe wall, the low-temperature core impingement, and the reverse flow, suppress the heat transfer.

In thermohydraulic analysis, unsteady subcooled flow boiling is of vital importance to both natural circulation systems where flow instabilities are frequently encountered and offshore nuclear power systems which operate under the influence of ocean waves. An experimental study was conducted here to investigate how an imposed periodic flow oscillation affects the subcooled flow boiling heat transfer of water in a vertical tube. The average heat transfer characteristics and variations of the transient parameters are investigated. The result shows that there is a wall temperature overshoot as a consequence of boiling onset and the wall temperature downstream of boiling front could even drop below the saturation temperature under the high inlet subcooling of 75 °C. Under flow pulsation, intermittent flow boiling appears, when the imposed heat flux, q, is close to the boiling onset heat flux of steady flow, qs,onset. As a result of intermittent flow boiling, the average wall temperature of pulsating flow is lower than the wall temperature in steady flow when the q<qs,onset and the average wall temperature of pulsating flow is higher than the wall temperature in steady flow when the q>qs,onset. Moreover, during intermittent flow boiling, the boiling induced a decrease of the total pressure drop and can cause a large pressure fluctuation. In addition, two types variation of outlet fluid temperature fluctuations were observed and the wall temperatures present an extra local maximum and minimum values beside the extrema corresponding to the extremal mass flux.

In this study we show that the POD can be used as a useful tool to solve inverse design problems in thermo-fluids. In this respect, we consider a forced convection problem of air flow in a grooved channel with periodically mounted constant heat-flux heat sources. It represents a cooling problem in electronic equipments where the coolant is air. The cooling of electronic equipments with constant periodic heat sources is an important problem in the industry such that the maximum operating temperature must be kept below a value specified by the manufacturer. Geometric design in conjunction with the improved convective heat transfer characteristics is important to achieve an effective cooling. We obtain a model based on the proper orthogonal decomposition for the convection optimization problem such that for a given channel geometry and heat flux on the chip surface, we search for the minimum Reynolds number (i.e., inlet flow speed) for a specified maximum surface temperature. For a given geometry (l = 3.0 cm and h = 2.3 cm), we obtain a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) model for the flow and heat transfer for Reynolds number in the range 1 and 230. It is shown that the POD model can accurately predict the flow and temperature field for off-design conditions and can be used effectively for inverse design problems.

Abstract While numerous applied studies have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of unsteady cooling solutions, a consensus has yet to be reached on the local instantaneous conditions that result in heat transfer enhancement. The current work aims to experimentally validate a recent analytical solution (on a local time-dependent basis) for the common flow condition of a fully-developed incompressible pulsating flow in a uniformly-heated vessel. The experimental setup is found to approximate the ideal constant heat flux boundary condition well, especially for the decoupled unsteady scenario where the amplitude of the most significant secondary contributions (capacitance and lateral conduction) amounts to 1.2% and 0.2% of the generated heat flux, respectively. Overall, the experimental measurements for temperature and heat flux oscillations are found to coincide well with a recent analytical solution to the energy equation by the authors. Furthermore, local time-dependent heat flux enhancements and degradations are observed to be qualitatively similar to those of wall shear stress from a previous study, suggesting that the thermal performance is indeed influenced by hydrodynamic behaviour.

In order to have higher power to weight ratio and higher efficiency gas turbine engines, turbine inlet temperatures continue to rise. State-of-the-art turbine inlet temperatures now exceed the turbine rotor material capability. Accordingly, one of the best methods to protect turbine airfoil surfaces is to use film cooling on the airfoil external surfaces. In general, sizable amounts of expensive cooling flow delivered from the core compressor are used to cool the high temperature surfaces. That sizable cooling flow, on the order of 20% of the compressor core flow, adversely impacts the overall engine performance and hence the engine power density. With better understanding of the cooling flow and accurate prediction of the heat transfer distribution on airfoil surfaces, heat transfer designers can have a more efficient design to reduce the cooling flow needed for high temperature components and improve turbine efficiency. This in turn lowers the overall specific fuel consumption (SFC) for the engine. Accurate prediction of rotor metal temperature is also critical for calculations of cyclic thermal stress, oxidation, and component life. The utilization of three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3D CFD) codes for turbomachinery aerodynamic design and analysis is now a routine practice in the gas turbine industry. The accurate heat-transfer and metal-temperature prediction capability of any CFD code, however, remains challenging. This difficulty is primarily due to the complex flow environment of the high-pressure turbine, which features high speed rotating flow, coupling of internal and external unsteady flows, and film-cooled, heat transfer enhancement schemes. In this study, conjugate heat transfer (CHT) simulations are performed on a high-pressure cooled turbine stage, and the heat flux results at mid span are compared to experimental data obtained at The Ohio State University Gas Turbine Laboratory (OSUGTL). Due to the large difference in time scales between fluid and solid, the fluid domain is simulated as steady state while the solid domain is simulated as transient in CHT simulation. This paper compares the unsteady and transient results of the heat flux on a high-pressure cooled turbine rotor with measurements obtained at OSUGTL.

Numerical investigations are performed on the convection heat transfer of supercritical pressure fluid flowing through vertical mini tube with inner diameter of 0.27 mm and inlet Reynolds number of 1900 under various heat fluxes conditions using low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence models due to LB (Lam and Bremhorst), LS (Launder and Sharma) and V2F (v2-f). The predictions are compared with the corresponding experimentally measured values. The prediction ability of various low Reynolds number k-ε turbulence models under deteriorated heat transfer conditions induced by combinations of buoyancy and flow acceleration effects are evaluated. Results show that all the three models give fairly good predictions of local wall temperature variations in conditions with relatively high inlet Reynolds number. For cases with relatively low inlet Reynolds number, V2F model is able to capture the general trends of deteriorated heat transfer when the heat flux is relatively low. However, the LS and V2F models exaggerate the flow acceleration effect when the heat flux increases, while the LB model produces qualitative predictions, but further improvements are still needed for quantitative prediction. Based on the detailed flow and heat transfer information generated by simulation, a better understanding of the mechanism of heat transfer deterioration is obtained. Results show that the redistribution of flow field induced by the buoyancy and flow acceleration effects are main factors leading to the heat transfer deterioration.

A numerical study of the flow and heat transfer in secondary flow elements of the entire inner portion of the turbine section of the Allison T-56/501D engine is presented. The flow simulation included the interstage cavities, rim seals and associated main path flows, while the energy equation also included the solid parts of the turbine disc, rotor supports, and stator supports. Solutions of the energy equations in these problems usually face the difficulty in specifications of wall thermal boundary conditions. By solving the entire turbine section this difficulty is thus removed, and realistic thermal conditions are realized on all internal walls. The simulation was performed using SCISEAL, an advanced 2D/3D CFD code for predictions of fluid flows and forces in turbomachinery seals and secondary flow elements. The mass flow rates and gas temperatures at various seal locations were compared with the design data from Allison. Computed gas flow rates and temperatures in the rim and labyrinth seal show a fair 10 good comparison with the design calculations. The conjugate heat transfer analysis indicates temperature gradients in the stationary intercavity walls, as well as the rotating turbine discs. The thermal strains in the stationary wall may lead to altered interstage labyrinth seal clearances and affect the disc cavity flows. The temperature, fields in the turbine discs also may lead to distortions that can alter the rim seal clearances. Such details of the flow and temperature fields are important in designs of the turbine sections to account for possible thermal distortions and their effects on the performance. The simulation shows that the present day CFD codes can provide the means to understand the complex flow field and thereby aid the design process.

The different turbulence models are adopted to simulate NASA-MarkII high pressure air-cooled gas turbine. The experimental work condition is Run 5411. The paper researches that the effect of different turbulence models for the flow and heat transfer characteristics of turbine. The turbulence models include: the laminar turbulence model, high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model, low Reynolds number turbulence model (k-ω standard format, k-ω-SST and k-ω-SST-γ-θ) and B-L algebra turbulence model which is adopted by the compiled code. The results show that the different turbulence models can give good flow characteristics results of turbine, but the heat transfer characteristics results are different. Comparing to the experimental results, k-ω-SST-θ-γ turbulence model results are more accurate and can simulate accurately the flow and heat transfer characteristics of turbine with transition flow characteristics. But k-ω-SST-γ-θ turbulence model overestimates the turbulence kinetic energy of blade local region and makes the heat transfer coefficient higher. It causes that local region temperature is higher. The results of B-L algebra turbulence model show that the results of B-L model are accurate besides it has 4% temperature error in the transition region. As to the other turbulence models, the results show that all turbulence models can simulate the temperature distribution on the blade pressure surface except the laminar turbulence model underestimates the heat transfer coefficient of turbulence flow region. On the blade suction surface with transition flow characteristics, high Reynolds number k-ε turbulence model overestimates the heat transfer coefficient and causes the blade surface temperature is high about 90K than the experimental result. Low Reynolds number k-ω standard format and k-ω-SST turbulence models also overestimate the blade surface temperature value. So it can draw a conclusion that the unreasonable choice of turbulence models can cause biggish errors for conjugate heat transfer problem of turbine. The combination of k-ω-SST-γ-θ model and B-L algebra model can get more accurate turbine thermal environment results. In addition, in order to obtain the affect of different turbulence models for gas turbine conjugate heat transfer problem. The different turbulence models are adopted to simulate the different computation mesh domains (First case and Second case). As to each cooling passages, the first case gives the wall heat transfer coefficient of each cooling passages and the second case considers the conjugate heat transfer course between the cooling passages and blade. It can draw a conclusion that the application of heat transfer coefficient on the wall of each cooling passages avoids the accumulative error. So, for the turbine vane geometry models with complex cooling passages or holes, the choice of turbulence models and the analysis of different mesh domains are important. At last, different turbulence characteristic boundary conditions of turbine inner-cooling passages are given and K-ω-SST-γ-θ turbulence model is adopted in order to obtain the effect of turbulence characteristic boundary conditions for the conjugate heat transfer computation results. The results show that the turbulence characteristic boundary conditions of turbine inner-cooling passages have a great effect on the conjugate heat transfer results of high pressure gas turbine.

Abstract Augmented backside cooling refers to the enhancement of the backside convection of a combustor liner using extended heat transfer surfaces to fully utilise the cooling air by maximising the heat transfer to pumping ratio characteristic. Although film cooling has and still is widely used in the gas turbine industry, augmented backside cooling has been in development for decades now. The reason for this, is to reduce the amount of air used for liner cooling and to also reduce the emissions caused by using film cooling in the primary zones. In the case of micro gas turbines, emissions are of even greater importance, since the regulations for such engines will most likely become stricter in the following years due to a global effort to reduce emission. Furthermore, the liners investigated in this paper are for a 10 kWe micro turbine, destine for various potential markets, such as combine heat and power for houses, EV hybrids and even small UAVs. The majority of these markets require long service intervals, which in turn requires the combustor liners to be under the least amount of thermal stress possible. The desire to also increase combustor inlet temperatures with the use of recuperated exhaust gases, which in turn increase the overall system efficiency, limits the cooling effectiveness of the inlet air. Due to all these reasons, an advanced form of augmented backside cooling would be of substantial significance in such a system. Currently some very simple designs are used in the form of straight plain fins, transverse strips or other similar geometries, but the creation of high heat transfer efficiency surfaces in such small sizes becomes very difficult with traditional subtractive manufacturing methods. When using additive manufacturing though these types of surfaces are not an issue. This paper covers the comparison of experimental results with conjugate heat transfer CFD models and empirical heat balance models for two different AM liner cooling geometries and an AM blank liner. The two cooling fin geometries include a rotating plain fin and an offset strip fin. The liners were tested in an AM built reverse flow radial swirl stabilised combustion chamber at a variety of operating conditions. During the experiments the surfaces were compared using a thermal camera to record the outer liner temperature which was viewed through a quartz outer casing. The experimental results showed that the cooling surfaces were effective at reducing the liner temperatures with minimal pressure losses for multiple operating points. Those results were then compared against the conjugate heat transfer CFD models and the empirical calculations used to design the surfaces initially. From this comparison, it was noticed both the CFD and empirical calculations under predicted the wall temperatures. This is thought to be due to inaccuracies in the predicted flame temperatures and the assumed emissivity values used to calibrate the thermal imaging camera. Further uncertainties arise from the assumption of a constant air and hot gas temperature and mass flow along the cooling surfaces and the lack of data for the surface roughness of the parts.
