The present paper serves the purpose of presenting an extinct type of 18th–19th century masonry building, that of an ox-stable, situated in one of Europe’s most secluded areas: The Holy Monastery of Pantokrator in Mount Athos Peninsula. Architectural drawings and surveying plots of its current state can serve as a record and reference of this UNESCO site for scholars. Adding to that, an elaborated proposal for the reuse of the building is presented together with technical drawings, which were approved by Greece’s Central Archeological Council. The masonry rectangular building is founded on natural rock with masonry pillar footings of different heights. Hence, the elevation irregularity and the different elevations of the footings of the structure present an additional challenge for the structural analysis. Structural analysis with a finite element (FE) model of the restored structure was executed with SAP2000 software. Performing lateral force and response spectrum analyses, stresses and deformations at critical points of the structure were calculated. Comparing a set of simplifying structural checks with the elastic FE analysis performed, it was concluded that the proposed design is effective in improving the earthquake performance of the structure.

Abstract: This research tackles essential elements of Syrian state-building processes through a structural analysis incorporating several theories and concepts including but not limited to colonialism, nationalism, military interventions, institutional development, minority rule, and eventually neocolonialism. The article reveals how minority rule and different implications of military interventions shaped today’s Syria, as well as addresses some of the current issues such as the absence of domestic political consolidation. The primary aim of this research is to contextualize the role of France—as a former colonizer, within the state-building process of Syria by examining different phases of Syria’s historical past. An examination of Syria’s political developments proved that having inherited a colonial past, the current state of Syria has also inherited an unavoidable legacy of political instability from its colonial past. The paper deals with a construction design and structural analysis of the rack system which will be used for storage of steel tubes of pressure pipeline for fodder mixtures transportation in agricultural company. Structure of the designed equipment is made by the welding of steel parts and consists of the main framework and four pull-out racks on both sides. Racks move by means of human power through a rotating crank. Every individual pull-out racks is able to carries pipes of various dimensions, both length and diameter with total weight up to 3 tons with respect to customer requests. Since it is a prototype’s structure, we have designed main dimensions of it, material and technology for production and performed also structural analyses as the integral part of every engineering design. Structural analyses were conducted by means of numeric procedure known as finite element method. With respect to the used steel profiles shell elements were used for FE model. Analyses were performed for maximal loading cases in order to identify the level of safety in the most exposed locations of the structure.

Historical buildings from the period of Promoterism constructed between 1850 and 1910, called “Gründezeitgebäude,” represent a main part of the building stock in Vienna. A typical building from this period is presented, along with the pathology of such buildings. A step-by-step strengthening and modernization strategy is described, including structural analysis data and design of sections data before and after interventions, along with detailing according to the respective codes.

The design process of the 100 m high reinforced concrete masonry building in China was firstly presented, deformation check calculation under earthquake action by mode-superposition response spectrum method and time-history analysis method were detailed and deformation under wind load was also checked. Then elastic-plastic deformation under earthquake action was checked by time-history analysis method and pushover analysis method with both under uniform load and reverse triangle load. The conclusion is construct 100 m high office building built in Fortification intensity 6 by reinforced concrete masonry is feasible. Then the building was redesigned as built in fortification 7, the same check was performed as that have been done in fortification 6, it is feasible too.

The lateral load-resisting system of high-rise buildings in regions of low and moderate seismicity and strong wind such as the typhoon in the Korean peninsula considers the wind load as the governed lateral force so that the practical structural engineer tends to skip the evaluation against the seismic load. This study is to investigate wind-designed steel diagrid buildings located in these regions and check the possibility of the elastic design of them out. To this end, first, the diagrid high-rise buildings were designed to satisfy the wind serviceability criteria specified in KBC 2016. Then, the response spectrum analyses were performed under various slenderness ratio and wind exposures. The analyses demonstrated the good seismic performance of these wind-designed diagrid high-rise buildings because of the significant over-strength induced by the lateral load-resisting system of high-rise buildings. Also, the analysis results showed that the elastic seismic design process of some diagrid high-rise buildings may be accepted based on slenderness ratios in all wind exposures.

The heavy duty diesel engine must have a large output for maintaining excellent mobility. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element model of a heavy-duty diesel engine was developed to conduct the stress analysis by using property of CGI. The compacted graphite iron (CGI) is a material currently under study for the engine demanded for high torque, durability, stiffness, and fatigue. The FE model of the heavy duty diesel engine section consisting of four half cylinders was selected. The heavy duty diesel engine section includes a cylinder block, a cylinder head, a gasket, a liner, a bearing cap, bearing and bolts. The loading conditions of engine are pre-fit load, assembly load, and gas load. A structural analysis on the result was performed in order to optimize on the cylinder block of the diesel engine.

The first case study used in this work is an existing seven-storey unreinforced masonry building (representing a typical residential building located in the district of L ́Example in Barcelona). The accuracy of the non-linear static procedures was evaluated by comparison with non-linear dynamic analyses for seven ground motion records and different levels of seismic intensity. The results obtained from the analyses showed good performance of the static pushover methods on the analysed building. The second case study used in this work is a two-storey unreinforced masonry building which was tested at ELSA in Ispra, Italy. First a modal response spectrum analysis was carried out. Subsequently, non-linear static analysis was performed using two different computer programmes. The results of the present work were compared with experimental results.

The present study evaluates the effect of plan configuration irregularity of different L shaped models. For this, one regular and six different L-shaped RC building frames were modeled for numerical analysis. The analysis was done through an equivalent static lateral force method and response spectrum analysis (dynamic analysis). The seismic response demands were measured in terms of story displacement, inter-story drift ratio, torsional irregularity ratio, and torsional diaphragm rotation. In addition, fundamental time period of structure, vibration mode shapes and modal participating mass ratios were also studied. The study shows that the fundamental time period of structure based on standard code shows a lower value as compared to a finite element approach. It is concluded that to account for the irregularities present within the buildings, current code provisions are insufficient and should be amended.
