A large part of research using questionnaires for female university students relies on self-reported body mass, height, and body mass index (BMI) data; however, the validity of these data in this population group is unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to examine the validity of self-reported body mass, height, and BMI in female students. Female students of biomedical sciences (n = 93, age 21.8 ± 4.7 years, height 1.63 ± 0.06 m, weight 60.5 ± 11.9 kg, and BMI 22.7 ± 3.8 kg/m2) completed the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and were tested for anthropometric characteristics at three different times of the day (12–2 p.m., n = 36; 2–4 p.m., n = 20; 4–6 p.m., n = 37). Participants over-reported height (+0.01 ± 0.02 m, +0.9 ± 1.2%, Cohen’s d = 0.22) and under-reported weight (−0.8 ± 2.1 kg, −1.2 ± 3.6%, d = −0.07) and BMI (−0.7 ± 1.0 kg/m2, −2.9 ± 4.2%, d = −0.19) (p < 0.001). A moderate main effect of time of day on %Δweight (p = 0.017, η2 = 0.086) and %ΔBMI (p = 0.045, η2 = 0.067), but not on %Δheight (p = 0.952, η2 = 0.001), was observed, where the group tested at 4–6 p.m. under-reported weight and BMI more than the 2–4 p.m. group. The weekly metabolic equivalent (MET) × min did not correlate with %Δheight (r = 0.06, p = 0.657), but its correlations with %Δweight (r = −0.27, p = 0.051) and %ΔBMI (r = −0.238, p = 0.089) reached statistical significance. Participants in the early follicular phase reported BMI more accurately (p = 0.084, d = 0.68) than those in the mid-luteal phase. In conclusion, female students over-reported height and under-reported weight and BMI. Under-reporting weight and BMI is influenced by time of day and menstrual cycle phase. These findings should be considered by health professionals and researchers when administering questionnaires to female students.

Introducción: La etapa universitaria es un proceso determinante para consolidar los hábitos de vida, donde los estudiantes se ven obligados a cambiar la mayoría de sus hábitos, que propician una mala alimentación, pobre organización del tiempo y menor actividad física, teniendo repercusiones en la condición y estructura física, lo que puede afectar considerablemente el estado de salud de esta población. Objetivo: El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar las diferencias en la composición corporal y actividad física en estudiantes universitarios según su año de ingreso. Materiales y métodos: Participaron en el estudio 287 estudiantes de ambos sexos (171 mujeres y 116 hombres), pertenecientes a las facultades de “Filosofía y Educación”, “Ingenierías” y “Ciencias”, a los cuales se les realizó una evaluación antropométrica para estimar la composición corporal con las ecuaciones de De Rose y Guimaraes y un cuestionario de frecuencia de actividad física. Resultados: Los resultados indican que existen diferencias en el Índice de Masa Corporal y masa grasa entre estudiantes mujeres de 1º y 2º año y entre 1º y 5º año en los hombres. La masa muscular no presenta grandes diferencias entre los grupos, pero si se aprecia cambios negativos entre el Índice de Masa Corporal y masa grasa de estudiantes que recién ingresan versus los estudiantes de último año. Conclusiones: Durante la universidad se vive un periodo crítico que afecta el nivel actividad física y el estado nutricional de los estudiantes y que podría empeorar en estudiantes con más años en la universidad.AbstractIntroduction: The university stage is a determining process when consolidating people’s habits of life, where students are forced to change most of their habits favoring a poor diet, poor organization of time and less physical activity, which at the same time, has an impact on the condition and physical structure and can significantly affect the health status of this population. Objective: To determine the differences in body composition and physical activity in university students according to their year of admission. Materials and methods: The study involved 287 male and female students (171 women and 116 men) who belonged to the faculties of Philosophy and Education, Engineering and Science, who underwent an anthropometric assessment to estimate body composition with De Rose and Guimaraes equations and a frequency of physical activity questionnaire. Results: The results show that there are differences in Body Mass Index and fat mass among female students of first and second year and between the first and fifth year in men. Muscle mass had no significant differences between groups, but there is negative changes between Body Mass Index and fat mass from students newly admitted versus students in their last year. Conclusions: During the university stage, students face a critical period that affects their physical activity level and nutritional status, which could get worse for students with more years at the university.

The changes occurring in the esophageal temperature (Tes) thresholds for initiation of heat loss responses as affected by the circadian period and menstrual cycle were studied. Four women exercised at 60% peak Vo2 in 35 degrees C (ambient water vapor pressure 1.73 kPa) for 30 min at 0400 and 1600 during the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phase. Tes, arm sweating rate (msw), and forearm blood flow (FBF) were measured frequently. At rest, Tes averaged 0.3 degrees C higher during L than F at both 0400 and 1600 and approximately 0.4 degrees C higher at 1600 than at 0400 during both phases. During exercise transients, the slopes of the FBF:Tes and the msw:Tes relationships were not different among treatments. The thresholds for initiation of sweating and cutaneous vasodilation were higher at 1600 than 0400 during both phases. Thresholds during F at 0400 averaged 36.44 degrees C for msw and 36.80 degrees C for vasodilation. The thresholds during L at 1600 averaged 37.46 and 37.53 degrees C for sweating and vasodilation, respectively. Our data indicate that the thermoregulatory effector activity during exercise is a function of numerous inputs, and one of these may be hormonal or hormonal-like in action. Controlling time of day and menstrual cycle phase are as important as controlling for aerobic power, age, and fitness in studying female thermoregulatory responses during exercise.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of abdominal obesity and its associated factors among adolescents, independent of confounders. Method: A sample of 14–17-year-old individuals (n=1.231), who were students from Londrina/PR-Brazil public schools, was studied. A questionnaire about physical activity, sedentary behaviour and socioeconomic conditions was applied. Anthropometry was composed of body weight (kg), height (m), body mass index (BMI=kg/m²) and waist circumference (cm). The association of abdominal obesity and independent variables was assessed using the chi-square test and the magnitude of associations was verified using Binary Logistic Regression in an unadjusted model and adjusted for confounders (gender, age, socioeconomic status, physical activity and sedentary behaviour). The confidence interval and statistical significance were set at 95% and 5%, respectively, using SPSS v15.0. Results: The abdominal obesity prevalence was 17.5% (CI = 15.4%–19.6%), and was higher in boys than in girls. Adolescents with abdominal obesity had higher values of body weight, height, body mass index and sedentary behaviour compared to eutrophic individuals. Being male increased the risk of abdominal obesity by 36% in adolescents. This risk was two times higher in those with high levels of sedentary behaviour. Conclusion: Abdominal obesity was significantly associated with gender and high levels of sedentary behaviour, regardless of confounding factors. Lifestyle habits are important modifiable risk factors that can effectively contribute to the reduction of obesity from an early age.

This study was intended to investigate the effect of aerobic gymnastic training at the menstrual cycle phase and perceptions of female students of Sport Science Faculty of State University of Padang on maximum aerobic capacity. The research was conducted using repeated factorial design 2 x 3. Aerobic gymnastic training was a treatment given to the menstrual cycle phase as independent variables, perception as the attribute variable, and the maximum aerobic capacity as the dependent variable. 40 students were taken by using purposive sampling technique as the samples from 170 female students enrolled at 2010/2011 academic year. The data of menstrual cycle phase and perception were collected by using questionnaires while the data of maximum aerobic capacity were taken by using MSFT (beep test). The data of maximum aerobic capacity were then analyzed using by inferential statistics ANOVA 2 x 3 two paths .The data analysis and interpretation indicate that: (1) as the whole, there is a significant difference of the effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual, menstrual, and postmenstrual phases on the maximum aerobic capacity; (2) there is an interaction between the effects of aerobic gymnastic training during the menstrual phases and the perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (3) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and menstrual phases of the students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (4) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (5) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (6) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and menstrual phases of the female students whose negative perception on maximum aerobic capacity; (7) there is no significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during premenstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose positive perception on maximum aerobic capacity; and (8) there is a significant effect of aerobic gymnastic training during menstrual and postmenstrual phases of the female students whose negative perception on maximum aerobic capacity. The findings imply that the lowness of maximum aerobic capacity of the students during menstruation is not mainly due to the menstruation itself but more to the negative perception during on the maximum aerobic capacity. Therefore, the teachers, lecturers, and trainers are expected to provide the female students (at any levels of education) with better explanation on the menstrual cycle phases and their effects on physical activities (sports)

Introduction: Body mass index (BMI) and physical activity are the controversial risk factors that cause hemorrhoids. This study was conducted to determine the association between body mass index and physical activity.Methods: This was a case-control study which involved two hundred and two patients using convenience sampling. They had to answer a questionnaire consisting of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) which monitored their physical activity and their BMI was also measured. For the descriptive analysis, Chi square and an odd ratio were carried out.Results: There was a significant association between age and hemorrhoids (p=0.02), in which the patients who were younger than 50 years old were more likely to have hemorrhoids compared to those who were older than 50 years old (OR=2.268, 95%CI: 1.107-4.630). For the risk estimation calculation, the Chinese individuals were found to have a higher risk compared to non-Chinese individuals (OR=2.056, 95% CI: 1.174-3.601). BMI was proven to be significantly associated with hemorrhoids (p=0.043). Physical activities were found to not be statistically significant (p=0.209). Those with a low and moderate physical activity level were 1.24 times more likely to have hemorrhoids compared to those with a high level of physical activity (OR=1.243, 95%CI:   0.697-2.217). The confidence interval was between 0.697 and 2.217, therefore it was not statistically significant.Conclusion: Physical activity was not associated with the hemorrhoids. However, it was shown that good physical activity could help to regulate bowel function and therefore, the occurrence of hemorrhoids would be less likely. BMI was significantly associated with hemorrhoids.
