(1) Background: Burnout syndrome is a significant problem in nursing professionals but may be dependent on the type of care that they provide. The objectives of our study are to identify and explore risk factors associated with burnout among gastroenterology nurses. Identifying the risk factors involved is an essential element for prevention programs. (2) Methods: We performed an analytical descriptive cross-sectional study. Burnout was measured using an adapted version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire. Strength of association between burnout scores and risk factors was calculated using Fischer’s exact test; (3) Results: Our subjects were all female nurses. Work-related risk factors, such as an increased workload and a large number of night shifts have been associated with burnout in nurses, together with a lack of physical activity. We found no significant associations with sociodemographic factors; (4) Conclusions: Gastroenterology nurses are affected by high levels of emotional exhaustion. Work-related risk factors and a sedentary lifestyle result in a greater prevalence of burnout. In this category of healthcare workers, preventive actions are needed. The physical activity outside work could be a protective factor for burnout, and an exercise program could contribute to the effectiveness of well-established burnout intervention programs.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the occurrence of work-related stress on nursing staff. Being resilience an essential element to countering adversity. The aim of the study was to assess burnout syndrome as well as resilience in hospital-care nurses during the first outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study of burnout syndrome and resilience of 101 nurses during the first COVID-19 outbreak. The Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Scale of Resilience of Connor-Davidson were used. Results: The burnout average score was 74.35 ± 12.78 points, and resilience was 27.94 ± 5.84. Temporary nurses reached a lower average score for the emotional fatigue dimension (23.80 ± 10.39 points) p < 0.05. The emotional fatigue dimension correlated adversely with the average score of resilience (r = −0.271; p < 0.001). Conclusions: The level of burnout in nurses was high, being higher on those who took care of COVID-19 patients. Resilient nurses were able to better cope with stressful situations.

Abstract Background The changes generated in the studentś lifestyle due to the academic demands, may favour the prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases as well as compromise other domains of their life. The purpose of this study was to establish the prevalence of behavioural risk factors in students of the Professional in Physical Activity and Sports program of a University in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Methods A cross-sectional study with a sample of 189 students was conducted. The students were surveyed with the first step of the STEPs questionnaire, which evaluates the behavioural risk factors for non-communicable diseases. A descriptive data analysis was performed, and Pearson tests were applied to determine the correlation between the analysed variables with a level of significance α = 0.05 using STATA 13.0. Results 80% of the participants were men. The age average was 22.7 ± 3.85 years. Regarding tobacco use, 10.1% of the participants were current smokers, while 30% smoked before. The majority of the participants (92.2%) have consumed alcohol within the past 12 months, while 69.8% consumed alcohol within the last month, with 8.7% of hazardous drinking. Concerning the diet, only 24.9% met the recommended consumption of fruits and vegetables per day. When assessing physical activity levels, only 6.3% were classified as physically inactive. Additionally, an average of 6 hours of sedentary behaviour was found, with 31.2% of excessive sedentary time. A weak correlation was found between age and academic cycle with the amount of physical activity at work (r = 0.24), (r = 0.18) and with sedentary time (r = -0.28), (-0, 32). Conclusions Although the prevalence of tobacco consumption was slightly higher than the national average, the students showed a lower prevalence of behavioural risk factors than the general population. However, it is necessary to promote strategies aimed at the control and prevention of these risk factors. Key messages Being a student of a program focused on physical activity and sport, can behave as a protective factor against the most prevalent risk factors in university life. It is necessary to implement more strategies centred on making students aware of the importance of the maintenance and improvement of their lifestyles in accordance with their professional profile.

Background: Burnout syndrome (BOS), a work-related constellation of symptoms and signs, causes individuals emotional stress and is associated with increasing job-related disillusionment. ICU-BOS among Thai intensivists and ICU nurses has never been clarified. Methods & materials: We performed a multicenter, prospective cross-sectional study in 17 hospitals in Thailand. BOS-related data were collected from full time ICU physicians and ICU nurses using electronic questionnaires. ICU-BOS was defined when participants exhibited at least 1 of 3 aspects (depersonalization, emotion exhaustion and personal accomplishment) regarding the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Primary outcome was prevalence of ICU-BOS among intensivists and ICU nurses, and secondary outcomes were risk factors for ICU-BOS. Results: After a total of 193 electronic surveys were sent, 171 responders (ICU physicians n=66, ICU nurses n=105) were included in this analysis (88.6%). Overall prevalence of ICU-BOS was 62.6%. Using multivariate analysis, the risk factors for ICU-BOS among intensivists were 1) income <20,000 THB, 2) feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year, 3) need >2 holidays/wk and 4) patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days (adjusted odd ratio (OR) of 31.5, 15.9, 7.4, 14.9; p =0.04, 0.007, 0.035, 0.004 respectively). Risk factors for ICU-BOS among ICU nurses were 1) age >40 years, 2) ICU experience >5 years, 3) patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days, 4) nurse to patient ratio lower than 1:1 5) feeling assignments in the ICU were too numerous and 6) feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year (adjusted OR of 15.7, 4.6, 10.0, 68.7, 4.3, 5.3; p =0.009, 0.04, 0.004, 0.004, 0.04, 0.007 respectively). Conclusion: In this study, we found a high prevalence of ICU-BOS among Thai intensivists and ICU nurses. Co-independent risk factors for BOS were patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days and feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year.

Objective. This study sought to determine which demographic and practice characteristics were predictive of professional burnout in otolaryngologists. Study Design. Cross-sectional survey. Setting. Tertiary care hospital. Subjects and Methods. Postal mailings, including the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), were sent to alumni of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics otolaryngology program. Participants completed the MBI according to the enclosed instructions. In addition, they answered a brief questionnaire comprising 8 items designed to collect demographic information. The MBI was then scored and subjects were classified according to their degree of burnout. Statistical analysis was then performed, and correlations were used to summarize associations between continuous variables. Results. This study had a response rate of 49% to the survey. Of the respondents, 3.5% met criteria for burnout syndrome, and 16% were classified as having high levels of burnout according to the MBI. Young age, number of hours worked per week, and length of time in practice were found to be statistically significant predictors of burnout. In addition, the length of time married and the presence of children in the home were also significant predictors of burnout. Conclusion. The authors report an investigation of burnout in practicing otolaryngologists using a validated instrument with correlation to potentially modifiable risk factors. The experience of burnout was found to correlate significantly with both personal and professional factors, each of which can potentially be addressed to curb the incidence of burnout. Further understanding of the potential risk factors for burnout is necessary to minimize and prevent burnout among practicing otolaryngologists.

Abstract Introduction Burnout syndrome is a work-related chronic stress that is described as emotional exhaustion, a decreased sense of personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. it has been considered an important problem especially among workers in the health sector. Objectives The aim of this research was to study the prevalence of burnout among Syrian residents during the Syrian crisis, which started 9 years ago, and to assess the factors related to burnout syndrome. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the levels of burnout syndrome; data were collected from residents doing their residency in 12 different hospitals spread over 8 governorates in Syria. A web-based Arabic version of Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was used. The final sample size was 3350 residents from different specialties. SPSS V.22 was used to analyses the data using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results (93.75%) had a high level in at least one of the three domains of the burnout index, and (19.3%) of the residents had a high level of burnout in all three domains. Significant relation was found between gender, age group and affiliated authority variables and the levels of burnout. However no significant relation was found between burnout and the specialties or geographic variables. Males, residents in Ministry of Defense, and emergency medicine residents had the highest levels of burnout. Conclusion High levels of burnout was found among residents during the Syrian crisis in comparison with other studies, which highlights the role of the current situation in raising workload on the Syrian residents.

Objective: Variations in work related stress and physical activity levels have been seen with a emphasis on sex difference. This cross-sectional study was designed to report the gender difference in stress dynamics and physical activity, and propose a framework for finding out the source causing these differences and associated lifestyle risk factors for cardio-metabolic disorders. Design: A cross-sectional study was designed which analysed 113 doctors (58 females and 55 males) for perceived and measured stress using validated questionnaires and methods. Long term time domain index of Heart Rate Variability was used to measure stress. Physical activity levels were also measured along with history questionnaire focusing on risk factors of lifestyle disorders. Results: The perceived stress measured by PSS-14, MSP-9 and VAS(stress) showed higher recorded values in female doctors (45.50±4.08, 36.21±7.52, 6.07±2.26) as compared to male doctors (44.00±5.58, 34.40±6.81, 5.47±2.25), respectively. The measured stress showed a significant comparison between both the genders putting males (44.79±10.69) under more stress than females (50.76±11.69) (p<0.05). The energy expenditure was higher in female doctors (2171.09±1703.66) than male doctors (1981.21±1440.17). Conclusion: Female doctors had high perceived stress levels with high levels of physical activity whereas male counterparts had high measured stress with low measured physical activity levels.
